Investigate the themes present in the Artwork. What cultural/political/ social events was alluding/talking about in the artwork?

The artist wanted to portray how woman are viewed as objects because the man of darker skin is engrossed in painting the woman. She sits on a stool instead of the chair which allows her to lean against and be comfortable. The colours of the teapots and table are very contrasting and hence draws the focus of the viewer to it. The viewer is also observing the woman. In this painting, the artist wanted to portray sexism in the sense that woman are seen as objects. The artwork also shows the way of life being simple since everything in the background lacks details and hence simple.

1. Contrast is seen in the artwork through the juxtaposition of warm colours against a cool background colour scheme.

3. The teacup and the table is a contrast of cool and warm colours
(http://sova-kunliang.blogspot.com/2011/03/liu-kang-artist-and-model-oil-on-canvas.html)
4. The focus of the artwork is clear. The viewers eyes are directed to the subject matter of the woman and the artist as they have more details as compared to the rest of the artwork.

5. There is rhythm created by the artist through the clear demarcation of the foreground, mid-ground and background of the artwork.

6. Movement is present in the artwork through the running colours in the background that move laterally across the artwork. Another way in which movement is shown is the circular positioning of the subjects in the painting. The viewer becomes a participant of that meeting and closes the circular formation. The circular side table echoes this cyclical movement.

the painting seems to be a reflection of our double standard society.
the tea pot handle is facing the female model which normally means that the people sitting with her expects her to serve the tea to the male artist or anyone else.
this painting shows the female model sitting on a stool with no backrest while the male artist is sitting on a chair with backrest and handrests with an empty chair (with backrest) beside them. it tells us that the artist had a choice to give her a more comfortable chair but chose not to.
the artist seems to suggest that females in that era seemed to be just an object to others.
the way the painting is painted also makes us feel that there is an audience behind the veiw of the painting watching the scene. in which shows that the woman is just a throphy wife / object just for entertainment.
