One annotation from chapter 3 that I have written down is close to the beginning we see that Pony boy has some negative opinions towards Darry. He feels he is too tough on him. While Pony boy still feels this way, the reader can start to see that Darry just cares for his brother. He is stressed he is not being the role model he hopes to be and just wants the best for them.

One annotation that i noted from the outsiders book was about Dally. He's had a tough past always getting into fights, being in and out of jail, and seeing people dead on the streets. But, when Pony told the story about Johnny getting beat up, Dally had a reaction to his friend being hurt. This shows that maybe Dally has a soft spot and feels something for his friends.

In the book, the Greasers seem to be very protective over Johnny maybe because he was jumped by the Socs, has a rough home life with his abusive mother and father, or he is described as a "wounded puppy," so the Greasers feel the need to protect him from the bad. The Greasers are always surprised when Johnny sticks up for himself in situations because he is usually quiet and humble.
-character

One thing I noticed was that Johnny idolizes Dally who often gets into fights and is regularly teasing and harassing women. These are things that Johnny has a hard time seeing and dealing with because of his home life and yet he still looks up to Dally a lot. I think this is because Johnny sees a soft spot in Dally whenever he is protective of him and sees himself in Dally in a way, feeling the need to put on a brave face.

Ponyboy realized that the Socs have struggles too, even though they may not seem as important or extreme to him. They both were able to open up to each other, showing that their social classes don't really mean anything at the end of the day. If the Socs and Greasers tried, they could get along.

Due to all the pressure that is put on Darry, he builds up his anger. It wasn't until Ponyboy accidentally came home past curfew one night that Darry released it all on him. Ponyboy tried defending himself but got slapped in the face for being arrogant, scaring him so much that he decided to run away.

In chapter three, we see Cherry and Ponyboy open up to each other about their life as greasers and socs. They see how they are not all that different after all. Cherry believes, that it is money that seperates them, but Ponyboy says that it is more than that. Ponyboy says that it is not only money, but their different values. Soc's try to hide away their true emotions behind a wall of numbness and composure built up by the standard that society has set for them. Greasers appear more emotional and rash. This is due to the fact that greasers don't have the same expectation to live up to that is set for socs.
