God told Rebecca that the twins, Jacob and Esau, were fighting and would continue fighting for the rest of their lives and that the elder shall serve the younger. Isaac loved Esau more, but Rebecca loved Jacob more.

When Esau came home from a hard day of working in the field, Esau begged Jacob to give him some of his stew. Jacob made a deal with Esau where Jacob would get the birthright and Esau would get the stew.

Isaac went blind as he aged. Isaac decided that he was ready to give Esau his birthright, so he sent Esau out into the field to get him some of venison prepared the way he liked it so that he can give him the birthright. Rebecca overheard and told Jacob to prepare to receive the blessing. She told Jacob to go kill some young goats and she would serve it to Jacob the way he liked it. Since Esau was hairy, Jacob covered himself with fur and prepared to receive the blessing. Isaac loved the meat and gave Jacob the blessing. Esau became angry with Jacob even though he sold it to Jacob. Esau vowed to kill Jacob once he was dead, so Rebecca sent Jacob away.

While Jacob was away, he had a dream of a ladder. God promises Jacob that this land (Canaan) will eventually become his.

God told Jacob to return to Canaan, but he became afraid that Esau would still be angry with him, so he sent many gifts to Esau. When it was finally time to meet, to Jacob's surprise, Esau welcomed Jacob back.

The night after Jacob returned to Canaan, he wrestled with a man. They wrestled until daybreak. The man was and angel of God and changed Jacob's name to Israel, meaning "wrestled with the angel."

Israel loved his son Joseph the most, so the other eleven sons resented Joseph. The eleven sons eventually sold Joseph into slavery in Egypt.

There was a famine in Canaan, so Israel sent his sons to get some food from Egypt, to their surprise, they found Joseph as the second in command of Egypt. Israel packed his belongings and moved to Egypt with his family.
