Not just because studies weren't super popular at the time, but because he had to leave behind what was left of his beloved family. Chapter one establishes Victor's family and makes their strong bonds clear. When introduced to Elizabeth, Victor even claims that she was a "more than sister" (37). Up to this point, he had been an only child, and despite his parents loving him, they still wanted a daughter but could not have one. This has to be a lonely feeling, knowing that your parents want another child more than yourself. However, Victor accepted Elizabeth immediately, giving her all of his love. Chapter two discusses Victor's run-in with natural philosophy and the sciences. Though his family is incredibly important to him, science starts to take over more of Victor's life. This brings Ingolstadt University into the picture, but Victor doesn't realize yet what will happen before his departure. Chapter three encompasses most of Victor's dearest memories. It's when his mother passes away, bringing Victor closer to Elizabeth. However, it's also when he departs for school, 370 miles away. Currently, it takes about eight hours to drive there from Geneva, but at the time it would have been a much longer and lonelier trip. The chapter doesn't much cover Victor's entire trip, but it does cover his first few days at the university. Chapter four covers the beginning of Victor's obsession with science and the curiosities of life. Victor says that the sciences became his "sole occupation," even over his family. Despite being anxious at first, I tend to believe that Victor became more comfortable at the thought of being away from his family. Maybe he even enjoyed it. Chapter 2 introduces Victor's curious mind and how it gets him into trouble. This chapter also shows the major difference between Victor and other children. Tragedy strikes in chapter 3 with the loss of Victor and Elizabeth's mother. In chapter 3 Victor also leaves for Ingolstadt University to continue his studies. I can imagine how difficult this was for Victor since it comes after such a difficult loss for him and his family. Elizabeth becomes the caretaker in place of Coraline ( Victors mother). Victor finds it hard to leave his family, but he sets off to Ingolstadt to study science. Victor was anxious about going to Ingolstadt for school. More than anything he was mainly nervous about leaving his family behind since he considered them the most important people in his life especially after he just lost his mother. Ingolstadt University is 304 miles away from Geneva, his home. In 1798, education wasn't as popular or normalized as it is now and finding a way to get there must've been hard. Back home he became comfortable with the people around him, he knew his place in the world- even finding a new love in science and nature despite Elizabeth. The events of chapters 1-3 show the audience Victor's past and how the people he holds dearly came into his life and departed from it. This backstory shows us his different relationships with his father, mother, Elizabeth, and his best friend. Victor mentions how he prefers it like this: "It was my temper to avoid a crowd, and to attach myself fervently to a few" (38). Soon after deciding to pursue an education, his father tells him to get out of his comfort zone and homeland and study in Ingolstadt. This is an entirely new experience for our narrator: he must start at the bottom all alone. In the end of chapter three and all of chapter four, he introduces his audience to his professors. Both drastically different from each other. Here the narrator, Victor, kind of butt's heads with professor Krempe while also getting along with Waldman. Victor has past experience with studying natural philosophy and how creation works, although this is not common for his time period. Throughout chapter four Victor is trying to prove his worth and show that he is knowledgeable. He has never had to do this before. He came from a prosperous family and was always blessed in abundance and nurture, as he felt like an “idol”, especially during his childhood in Geneva. Both his parents were very supportive and helped him submerge himself into the sciences. Later on, he was introduced to Elizabeth, the adopted orphan of the family, Victor soon had an impeccable bond with her,  “....literally, and looked upon Elizabeth as mine-mine to protect, love and cherish” (31). Evidently so as Victor sees Elizabeth as “my more than sister, since till death she was to be mine only” (31). Elizabeth was pretty much substituted as Victor’s mother as she was another woman who unconditionally loved him as much as his mother did. Later on, for his mother to pass away from taking care of Elizabeth, causing Victor to feel grief. After her death, he decides to leave for university,  moving from Geneva to Ingolstadt has changed Victor completely, changing his focus of his family to his studies, “two years passed in this manner, during which I paid no visit to Geneva” (51).  Eventually, he then devotes his time and efforts to doing what nobody has done before, which was to combine the studies of old and new sciences to create a new being. It was his way to cope with his mother’s death. Victor believes that he is “capable of bestowing animation upon lifeless matter” (53). I think he feels anxious and miserable at times due to his circumstances throughout his life especially being surrounded by death. Note the setting is in the 18th century, during the end of the Enlightenment era to the beginning of Romanticism. Both have contrasting focuses, the Enlightenment is based on reasoning while romanticism is based on emotions. Combing both by using science and imagination to life. The distance from Geneva to Ingolstadt is roughly around 372 miles.
