The main reasons behind his great success was because he of all the knowledge he had about war tactics and politics. While Tokugawa Ieyasu ruled over japan wars and rivalries dissipated and japan prospered for the length Tokugawa Ieyasu blood was shogun. Who knows what power hungry tyrants could of been shogun if Ieyasu did not sake command. 
Leyasu will be remember for his intellectual war tactics, his tactical political stands and most importantly his help in making japan what it it today.
