his father's family was strongly involved in politics: generations in power, it's said that the first lee ancestor to take a role in politics occurred during the end of the joseon dynasty, during korea's reformation under emperor gojong. since then, the lee family has dispersed across many countries throughout the world. in fact, it is said that sangheon's own grandfather (many greats away, too many to list, frankly) was an advisor to the emperor during the gwangmu reform. 

his mother was a chef, working at one of her family's renowned restaurants, many with michelin stars attracting patrons from around the world.

the marriage was arranged in order to provide more stability to each family, to have connections in other parts of luxury upper-class suburbia. though it was a successful marriage, bringing about the stability desired for both families, the inside workings of the couple were less than loving.

the first son, sangheon, was born in 1999; lee minsu and song sora divorced only three years later.

though sora and her son remained in korea for a few years following the divorce, the fallout from the failed marriage was much too heavy to bear; she was blamed for the separation, due to her ambition and refusal to become a subservient housewife to her politician ex-husband. when sangheon turned five, sora and her son emigrated to london, uk to start a second location of her family's michelin-rated restaurant.

it was both a fleeing and a new chance: in london, away from the watchful and overbearing eyes of their family, she could raise her son the way she aimed to, free from the burdens of upper-class snobbery. of course, she herself was still very well off, even more so when the second restaurant location gained nearly as much attention as the first.

at times, sangheon could be pretentious, spoiled—he knew that his family had never struggled, never would. still for the most part, his mother had managed to teach him proper values and kindness, something that would have been lost on him had he remained with his horridly big-headed relatives in korea.
