I chose to create a qualitative phenomenology research question to examine the students experiences during Covid-19. The Sense of Coherence framework will provide a foundation from which to understand student experience. This framework is foundational only and it will not be used to skew the data. This research is a relativist method equipped with an "experience is knowledge" epistemology.

This phenomenological research aims to understand the essence of a social phenomena from the perspective of those who have experienced it (Stalwick, 2021). Phenomenology with its descriptive intent involves the "bracketing" (or putting aside) of the researcher's own preconceptions and perspectives in order to understand the "lived experience" of the research participants (Stalwick, 2021). These studies often involve an in depth exploration of the experiences of a relatively small number of individuals. (Swanwick, 2014)

My qualitative data collection method would be made up of 10-15 participants from year 1-2 dentistry students from the University of Saskatchewan. I will be taking field notes which is a type of data collection to observe the students. I would also, be conducting an interview with each of the students individually. The questions I would ask the students would be open ended questions around coping methods, burnout, mental health, setbacks and potential strides during Covid-19.

In order to complete my qualitative research, I would code my interview and observational results to help create a thematic analysis based on the infkrmation I have been given by the students. This would help to create data to identify broad themes and patterns that the students used to help them cope with Covid-19 (Swanwick 2014, p. 377). Based on the coping methods provided, I could create a list of top five tips that were shown in the coding lists for reliability. By creating this type of phenomenology methodology study we would be able to attempt to understand what dentistry students experienced during the pandemic at the University of Saskatchewan.

I want to find out a little bit more about how the students managed to cope in an already stressful program once Covid-19 was added to their University considerations. I have created a general factors list from the dentistry program under regular conditions and the program once Covid-19 also became a consideration. These lists are meant merely as a general guide to help you understand by thought process when approaching this research question.
