There are so many Chrome extensions that are available to educators to install to assist the students we serve. One extension that I read about and then installed immediately is an extension called Mote. This allows anyone to record their voice and add it as a sound clip MP3 file into many platforms, but specifically in a few Google apps (Google Docs and Slides to name a few) that could be really useful for students when producing work. This is a great option to have at the ready to apply a few of the components of UDL and include a way for students to record their voice to produce something that meets a specific learning objective. I highly recommend checking out Mote and install it to your Chrome browser to start dreaming up how to use this with your (future) students.

In “Provide Options for Comprehension”, this section of the article highlights the fact that not everyone comes in the classroom with the same set of knowledge. For example, a metaphor may make sense to those who were born in the United States but not to someone immigrating from another country. As a teacher, one should give background information and check for understanding. This section also talks about the importance of repetition and going back to key ideas. A teacher should also take different approaches when explaining a concept such as film or other visual and creative ways. Overall, being organized in one’s approach to learning a new concept can help with comprehension and breaking the subject down into smaller chunks.

In Shelley Moore’s “Removing the Barriers: Planning for ALL! “ they argue that the educational system must not look at students that are struggling as broken or in need of a typical medical approach. In order to shift away from this reaction and deficit focused system, we should shift to a social model that looks at the environment a student is in and predict the barriers the student may face ahead of time for them to be successful. If we do this the student will not need as many resources. I think this is a great idea because it helps teachers come up with different strategies to help their students comprehend subjects and feel supported. If the system allows teachers to prepare ahead of time, the student won’t be left out of the plan. I especially like the shift away from emphasizing so much on failure. It is ridiculous that we raise kids to be ashamed of failure and mistakes instead of being proud and encouraging them to learn and grow from setbacks.

Learning how to navigate these tools will allow students to experience new ways to digest content. I think visuals are especially important because it can keep students in engaged with the content instead of seeing the same text and blank background all the time. Learning how to use features on google can help one stay more organized and that will help students follow along better.

The host, Dr. Shelly Moore, creates videos around 5 minutes with the goal to support the teaching and learning of all students. I personally watched the IEP(EAS) video. She used an analogy with seeds/plants to support the quote she used by Alexander DenHeijer. The quote read, “When a flower doesn’t bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.” To conclude, she challenged the viewer to think about what would be on our “seed packet”? What are our strengths? What do we offer our community? What do you need to grow?

This one in particular mentions Dyslexia which is hard to get diagnosed but a good many of our students struggle with. I know how it goes as well and it can make things extremely frustrating even when you enjoy something, like I did with reading. A lot of students would feel that frustration though and not try to get through it. Tools like Helper Bird make it more likely that they will be able to work through the frustration and find the joy in reading, and writing.

Shelly Moore's videos offered such insightful information in regards to inclusion and equity for all students. In her video Planning for ALL, she discusses how students with disabilities are often viewed with their specific disability as a problem that needs to be fixed. She suggests that we move away from a medical model and towards a social one in which we try to focus on the barriers that are limiting around them. Instructors should provide opportunities for all learners to receive the information presented, allow for them to express their understanding, and to engage students as stated in the UDL guidelines. In turn, these inclusive learning opportunities would benefit all students. It made me think back the the TED talk we watched last week when Michael Nesmith explained, when you achieve universal design it benefits all, that disability forces you to come up with new solutions. Designing and implementing plans that benefit all students regardless of their disability should be the goal!

I have some students that are second learners and some that don't seem to do the work. This may be because I'm presenting the information incorrectly for their learning styles or any unknown disabilities they may have. I downloaded the color correction app due to myself having issues with reading high contrast text. Especially black wording on white backgrounds. I tend to do better with blues or purples with black. I currently use google classroom to present material as well as paper handouts of the same material and presenting it on the smart board for those who don't have trouble reading. But the class and I will read out loud the material for those who learn better through auditory presentations. I want to be more inclusive to any other issues that my students may have that are hindering their learning which is being reflected in their quiz scores.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I clicked this link to review. But I am so happy that it was about behavior management! Out of my three classes, my third one is out of control in the sense of noise level, talking over each other, etc. I also have a student that I'm positive has ADHD, but is undiagnosed/untreated, which takes more of my attention for my classroom management when greatly effects my ability to manage the rest of the classroom. Having the tools taught through this podcast are strategies that I can not wait to apply to my class!
