• A simple laboratory experiment using plastic bottle, balloon, hot and cold water to illustrate the process of Charles while showcasing and making a simple prototype hot air balloon.

Grouping & Materials
Divide the class into 4 groups. Each group receives:

• 2 identical, equally inflated balloons

• 1 bowl of hot water

• 1 bowl of ice water

• Tongs

Distribute the Activity Sheet
Hand out “The Breathing Balloon: Watch It Grow and Shrink.” Instruct students to observe how gas volume changes with temperature.

Each student group will prepare an initial discussion board using the materials provided. This board should clearly present the group’s answers to guide questions based on their laboratory observation.

1. What happened to the size of the balloon when it was exposed to higher temperature?

2. What happened to the size of the balloon when it was exposed to a lower temperature?

3. How does the size of the balloon relate to the change in the temperature?

4. How would you explain the changes in the balloon’s volume using the concept of kinetic energy of gas molecules?
