"Confucius was born into a royal family of the Chou Dynasty. Confucius's father divorced his first wife at an advanced age, because she had borne him only daughters and one disfigured son. He then married a fifteen-year-old girl from the Yen clan, who gave birth to Confucius. Confucius refers to the relationship as a "wild union," which very possibly indicates that Confucius was an illegitimate child, or a child born out of wedlock. Confucius is believed to have lost his father when still a small child and to have been raised in poverty by his mother. "

"Chinese state led the empire to breakdown. China was divided into contending states under the nominal rule of the Zhou (Chou) Dynasty. By the eighth century b.c.e., the Zhou rulers had lost all effective control over their subordinate lords, who became independent rulers. By Confucius’s day, these rulers often were themselves figureheads, controlled by powerful individuals or families close to the throne. "

"Confucius saw this as an opportunity to strengthen the old Chinese values and customs. His ideas were based primarily on the principle of "ren," or "loving others," while practicing self-control. He believed that ren could be put into action using the Golden Rule. The Golden Rule is "do not do to others what you do not wish for yourself." He also believed that a leader should practice self-control in order to stay humble and treat his followers with care. Confucius's education also is focused on math, archery, music, and different arts."
