Queen Elizabeth financed the expeditions that Drake led against the Spanish colonies (1570-1572). Sailing north along South America,until he probably reached Vancouver Island. Eventually, however, he was forced to change course and land in a bay, located north of the present city of San Francisco, which has since been named after him. On 23 July 1579 Drake left the American coast and reached England in September 1580. Drake was thus the first Englishman to have circumnavigated the globe. For the enterprise the queen appointed him a knight.
