The Big Question.

What if the internet stopped working forever the next morning and you had no time to prepare at all? What would the world come to? My guess is that the economies will fail, stock markets will crash, and jobs will be lost. So the big question is… As a society, are we depending on the internet to much? The internet gives us a way that we can answer any question or solve any problem, just by typing in our inquiry. But, there are some downsides to it. For example, it becomes a distraction and a way for our minds to slack off. We become so reliant on our phones and google that we can barely think for ourselves. And although it helps us solve our problems, we use it so much that soon we cannot solve any problems for ourselves. So, maybe next time you have a question or problem, you can try to answer or solve it for yourself before you resort to google. Now, if for some weird reason the internet did shut down, every day life would be would be atrocious. Well, actually it depends how much your daily life relies on the internet. If you use it a lot, for example, your job is based around the internet, you will be affected big time. But if you only use it in your spare time, you won’t see as big as a difference. From research I can make an educated guess that the human race would recover if something like this would happen. In fact I think that we would be smart enough to not reactivate the internet. This would cause the world to go into “simpler times.” For example, kids would actually go to libraries for school research instead of looking everything up on their phone. And although smartphones would be erased from civilization, normal cell phones that does not use any internet might still be relevant to our lives. The worst part about it though is that of the economy. Most business these days rely somehow on the internet, this would mean that most of companies in the world would close down. Now, granted some stores will still get business, in fact they might get more profit than they did before. But still, this would mean that millions maybe billions of peoples would lose jobs. And believe it or not, credit cards will be irrelevant. You will have to pay with a check or some cash. According to my research, if this happened, the first 10 years of life would be like the second Great Depression. It would be similar because the stock market would crash, in fact it might crash completely. This would cause millions to lose their money to failing banks and millions more to lose their jobs. Now I’m not saying that the internet will go haywire, but if it does I would do anything to be prepared and informed about the internet and what might happen to civilization as we know it.

Too Addictive?

Studies have shown that trying to stop using the internet is more difficult than the chemical nicotine found inside cigarettes. So could you do it? Could you endure an entire week without the internet at all? After all, there are some major benefits to it. But, you would also have to give up some of the daily habits you have as a person. The rules are, you need to go one week without using any type of internet, including social media. That means that you cannot use your phones to look anything up on google and you also can’t stream videos on your computer. After a week long test, studies have shown that only 34% of adults can do it. Over Christmas break, my dad proposed to our family that we went with no internet for the entire day. That included my aunt and uncle, my cousin in college, and my grandmother and grandfather. I realised that the internet was consuming more of my life than I thought. I found myself wanting to look up answers to a question we had or being incredibly bored with nothing to do. We actually played monopoly for a little bit. But there were also a lot of changes to what I did. Unfortunately for my mom, we still had a little bit of cooking to do until dinner was ready. And usually she gets the recipes of the internet, but she tried to remember the recipes and luckily she did a really good job of it too. My aunt was angry too because she needed to read the newspaper instead of looking the news up on her laptop. On the bright side, there were major benefits to giving it up. I was more productive as I finished my history homework and cleaned the whole house in under two hours. And I feel like that was the most time I spent with my family in a long time. Probably since before I got my first phone which was about 4 years ago. I also noticed that I was more observant without my phone. I saw things that I never saw before. For example, I just saw that our neighbor just bought a new bird bath for their flower bed. And if you are wondering, it doesn’t just work for me. If you are currently in college and you decide not to use the internet for your leisure, you will have more time to study and finish homework. It also helps in class too. Instead of being on your phone all the time, you could be paying more attention to the class which will eventually lead to better grades. Giving up the internet can also lead to more face to face interactions which will eventually lead to better people skills. Studies have shown that people that use less of the internet are in better physical shape than people that are always on the internet. In conclusion, going a week without the internet might widen your horizons and let you see more of the world.

Before the internet was discovered students had a much harder time completing assignments than kids nowadays. For example before the internet entered our schools, students were forced to write long essays by hand. But now, instead of students “writing up” their essays, they are allowed to “type up” their essays. Students have a plethora of choices to customize their essays like hundreds of colors and fonts to chose from. And if the teacher allows it, students can even put pictures along with the text. This can apply with homework too. Teachers can assign homework that needs to be read online. Unfortunately, if a teacher hands out a homework sheet that she/he didn’t make, it is almost certainly on the internet with the answers attached to it. On the bright side, the internet has made it easier to collaborate on projects through programs like google docs. There, multiple students can work on one single project and still share the workload. Another way the internet has affected is through smartphones. Most schools do have a policies on when and when kids are allowed to have their phones out. Some schools allow students to have their phones out whenever, and some only let their kids have their phones at lunch. The only problem is that phones in school also bring in troubles. Smartphones in class make it easier to cheat on tests and quizzes, although some teachers are smart enough to have their student’s phones confiscated before the test. But still, even in normal class, phones can come as a distraction to the students as social media and texting is super addictive. Even worse, phones in school gives an increased chance of cyber bullying. If a school doesn’t allow phones, they usually have laptops for the kids to use. For example at Manheim Central, kids are given personal laptops that only they use. Laptops make school a breeze. If you have a paper, you have thousands of articles to chose from, and that means you can also cite that article without any effort. But it does come with setbacks. Thousands of articles means that you need to investigate to see if the article is reliable. In the past 40 years, the invention of the internet has revolutionized the way we learn, whether it’s for the good or bad, kids have graduated with the eagerness to change the world for the better.

Last week I made the most crucial, significant and critical step into successfully completing my S.M.A.R.T. goal for my 20time project, I created my website. Now that I have done this, I can feel more open to ideas, and it motivates me not to procrastinate the project until April 24th. Soon, my project will be half way finished, and then after that, it will be completely done and a published website. First of all I did a little bit more than create it. I decided I would title the website “Internet Problems.” Personally, I think this is a creative title, because it can mean two things. It could mean you can’t log onto the internet, which is not want I want the website to be about, or it could mean that the internet is causing physical, exterior problems. Besides the title, I also created another Google Document that I can jot down ideas I have for the website, and paste pictures I am considering to put into the webpage. When I was creating the website, I decided to settle On Wix.com, a free and approved website that has over 100 templates to help structure your website. Personally, I went for just a blank canvas that I can plaster words with. To start, all I did was create a banner behind the title to create the color theme of the website. After that I went ahead and made 3 more pages to finish out the structure of the website. Before I got ahead of myself, I decided to stop and think about what I had left to do. First, I still need to finish my two column notes. After that I will have my 3 page topics that I can write about. With the topics I can create an outline or plan for each page. Then finally, I can find pictures and decorate my page until I’m satisfied enough to publish it. In consideration of starting my project, I have realized that although I have accomplished the beginning of my Goal, I still need to put forth effort into the remaining aspects of the assignments.

The past two weeks haven’t been as productive towards 20time than I would have liked, but I still worked towards my goal. I’ve almost completed my thesis statement for the website. Soon I can incorporate my thesis into my website which is about halfway done. I’ll put an introductory paragraph at the top with my thesis statement just like a normal essay, but instead of having paragraphs, I’ll have pages for each topic. I’ve created the format for my website, I have a color combination of primarily dark orange with some blue, I’ve put in place where all the pictures will go along with where the actual writing will go. Now, the only thing that I have to do is create a draft of the topics on my two column notes. After that, I can edit and revise them to finally put them on my project. I’m estimating that it will take about two weeks at about the pace I’m going. Not to mention that I will have to cite the resources I used besides the 4 pages I found towards the beginning of the school year. I haven’t decided, but I may be putting that on a “works cited” page at the end with labeling for each citation. Of course my bibliography will have a MLA format citation, that includes having proper form when citing quotes. We have less than a month left to finish our 20time projects, and right now I have nothing holding me back from completing my SMART goal.

With only a week and a half left until our 20time presentation is due, time is of the essence for me. Luckily, I’ve been working on it for over a month now with time left over from homework or digital agendas in other classes. But still, I only have the introductory page which consists of one paragraph introducing the audience to the idea and motivation behind my research question, and a connective image on the page. If each page had that amount of information, my speech wouldn’t last longer than a minute, so I plan to stretch out the other 3 main pages, and have smaller but more pictures. The next page I have to do is the page titled “IQ Dilemma” which explains the drop in IQ scores since 1989. I plan to space this section out into three paragraphs to keep it more organized. This hopefully will allow me to place more images in the excess space. If I don’t place more images, I will create a chart with the data I can find and put it in the space instead. After that page I will repeat that process with the other two pages, “School Depreciation” and “The Economy.” Which will lead me to copy and paste my MLA format bibliography into the bibliography page. With the structure of the website done, I can revise and edit the pages and add on the final touches, for instance, transitions between pages and title slideshows. In conclusion, if I plan my time correctly, I can finish my SMART goal by the due date.
