I am enrolled in the Masters in Special Education with added authorization in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Adaptive Physical Education

I currently hold my credential in k - 6 general education, mild moderate, and moderate severe. I am working towards attaining my autism and adaptive pe credential.

At the start of this school year, it will be my 3rd year teaching. I spent my first year as a resource specialist and then transitioned to teaching in a 3 - 5th grade mod - severe autism classroom. I am staying in the 3 - 5th grade grade position. I do aspire to one day leave the classroom and start my own non - profit working with young adults on the autism spectrum and supporting / teaching them how to live an independent life.

I grew up in middle class with two educated parents. Christianity has and continues to be a cornerstone in our family. Linguistically I had limited exposure to other language sin my day to day life except while on missions trips. I have been able to serve, learn, and explore in Peru, Mexico, and Cambodia. While in those countries we rarely had translators and would use limited knowledge of the language, games, music, and gestures to communicate. As an adult I have slowly been learning ASL to use with someone of my limited language students.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Explain

If family was not a factor both my husband and I would love to live in Phoenix area, Arizona. I know it's insanely hot but unpopular belief dry heat feels better, even if it is 108 degrees. I attended college at GCU and fell quickly in love with the dessert sunrises, Sedona, school settings, endless amounts of themed coffee shops, and my temporary home church.

What is your favorite thing about your career? Explain.

My favorite part of my job is being part of the big and small victories. Last year, I remember tearing up because on my students was able to sound 50 kindergarten level words. This was a huge success as we started the year with him exclusively knowing 11 out of 26 letter sounds. I love that not all of our celebrations are academic some include learning to velcro their own shoes or joining a group of students out on the playground. In my job I get partner with families and see children grow!

What makes you laugh the most? Why?

Nothing makes me laugh more than my husband. Specially, when we get together with his five siblings and I watch him transform back into a 14 year old. Whether he is wrestling with his brothers or throwing his younger sister into the pool. I spend those evening cracking up but also trying to avoid being pulled into the chaos.

Which is your favorite book or movie? Explain why.

My all time favorite movie is, Instant Family. It is a story about a couple fostering three siblings and how dramatically different their life changes. This movie demonstrates to me to the love of a family and even though kids may bring chaos they all bring an endless amount of joy. This is especially sentimental to me now as we are preparing to have our first child in early January.

What motivates you to work hard? Explain.

From the age of 5 through coaching at 23, I was involved in gymnastics. My head coach ingrained me the verse, "In everything you do work at with all your heart as working for the Lord and not for men." This verse has become one of my life verses. She taught me that it doesn't matter what I am doing, it matters that I do it with all of my effort.
