Discovery

24/09/18 Last week, during a session I came late for we begun by exploring the theme of rebellion. Each group, after we were split, were assigned a director and a stage / set designer and then told to produce something exploring this theme

"§In small groups either devise a scene where a young person questions a rule or statement from an older person or a scene where an older person has doubts about what a younger person in authority is claiming."

one theme looked at the idea of police stopping people in a car and attempting to force them to conform to what we are doing ; there were different roles, with my character being a timid pragmatist intent on leaving unmolested.

Other productions, as stated elsewhere, explored themes of being in a hospital and having someone attempt to steal wealth, however, in the group I worked in today, we looked at the idea of age (see above)

Development

Moving on from Doubt we have begun to look at non-conformity, and followed along a brief similar to the one from last week which looked at questioning authority. We were split again and this time, we looked at controversies, and arguments . At first we used a number of exercises involving responding to people going against rules before splitting into groups to explore dissent as a theme.
This theme followed a provocative discussion in which a female response to ideal age gaps seemed to differ to male perspectives.

For our new scene, we were asked to explore how a younger person might gradually undermine the authority of an older person; and so went with the idea of a young person resisting following the instruction of changing the channel when called upon by an older person.

Reflect

we entered into a discussion on age, and what that might mean for relations and sex. I offered that I personally believe that once a female is old enough she and a male of any age can engage in whatever acts they agree upon and desire.

Evaluation

Our scene was definitely provocative however one criticism was that it didn't let itself build and develop. There is a need to work on the pace of the scene to ensure it has what Peter Brook refers to as Soul or Human Connection*

There is always the temptation to go along with silly or very surreal scenes, which, being so sensational, follow television formats, which themselves, are sometimes misleading accounts of actual raw events. This is one thing to consider for staging similar ideas and themes; how we can put them across in an original manner, which doesn't become comedic
*http://www.inquiriesjournal.com/articles/101/the-development-of-theatre-peter-brook-and-the-human-connection

Reflection

In future we would definitely ensure there is less happening on stage so that there is asset focus that na audience can stick with and slowly process and digest. At the same time, in terms of nonconformity, the irony is there is much to be gained from exploring this contradiction and perhaps provoking the audience so see how hectic the real world is but putting chaos on stage, or at least leading up to such upheaval

Research

I support this view by ideas of Tom Leykus when it comes to questions of age and experiences:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohtCSj2Fuvw
His argues that as females age poorly compared to males, there will usually be a healthy age gap between the two when dating .

My views are also inspired by a comic who I would ideally like to model much of career upon, Patrice O Neil,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1IsDto41Tw
He advocates for males being complete and in charge of themselves so as to avoid being manipulated by societal pressures

It was an interesting topic as both Tom and Patrice, despite racial differences, are clearly complimentary in terms of their approach to dealing with females, and questions about sex and age. They differ to much conventional views, and might even be said to protest against "traditionalism." I personally believe that males live under a regime of gynocentrism, (as opposed to structuring the world on a universalised regime of patriarchy) and encourage radical idea that break from patterns of conformity and obedience to male expectation viz male disposability .

In 2000, after protesting against the indifference of intellectuals in "technical areas" he lost his job. He then wrote a book, expressing dissent, showing that the post-modern world of "professionalism", itself structured on violence, is utterly coercive, and programmes sutdents who will to enter into "stable" professions to abandon their individual views, and dissent against prevailing regimes.

Another massive intellectual whose who I use to guide my theatre, alongside Jeff Schmitt, and Abdias Do Nascimento, is Tommy Curry, who expressed very radical views when, following a number of incidents involving the destruction of black bodies, he suggested that blacks might have to resort to self defence, even killing others, if it means they can be free from death. The Guardian did a massive feature exploring his dissent, which it was, for, following his stance, he was threatened with death, and even possible expulsion, but remained stead fast in his belief

Nat Turner?

Monday (Riot) 07-10-18

we explored the theme of rebellion as it moved to riot. We started with the scenario of the Mark Duggan killing having been asked to recall any recent riots there were.
We were asked how the Duggan incident erupted, and it was suggested that it might have been because the family were disgusted by his death which seem to have occurred as a result of a claim he brandished a gun. We were then asked to devise a few scenes
1. we are in a class and a teacher picks on one student and as a result of this injustice, a riot occurs
2. in the next, we had to explore the process of planning a riot, with it being decided there would be at least three scenes; an injustice occurring, planning a riot to move to eruption and finally, the riot itself and its aftermath. (10-3)

We were asked to do two pieces of homework

There was a task exploring proxemics; we were told to research 10 different types of theatre an draw pictures of them, and the other was to create a poster identifying all the parts of the theatre.
we looked at proxemics by looking at status; we were asked to move into order to heights, and then age, and finally, we were given cards and then to get into order based on the rank and importance of the cards. Afterwards this was moved into the centre of the stage, as we were asked to determine what people had what status;
we were then made to go into smaller groups and create a scene where we explored power; there was
a) a job interview
b) dating, a break up
c) we were finally told to get into pairs and explore a dispute of any kind, but to stage it in different places.

Friday

Discovery

today, (05/10/18) we did an exhibition; based on all the material that was gathered on Friday of last week (28/09/18); we decided to do an exhibition using
- music
- random photos from the exhibition
- notes people could write on
- people as statues
- invisible theatre
we also had interaction in the form of blocking people from moving in and out of the space;

afterwards we were asked to bring a costume in ;
we were told to create a dictatorship in which people were restrained ; it was to create a situation where there is a protest over some injustice and so it was decided that to begin with, in this oppressive state people would be forced to get into a set place. In the next scene, there were to plot escape and then finally, they were to clash with authorities.

Development

We were told to think about a scene in which we clash with authorities and protest against an injustice they pose. It challenged us to reflect on how social movements are born, and the point at which protest is adjudged to be justified, or if it ever is. This also highlighted a better question of how to put this thought process across in a scene ? We were especially challenged by competing personalities and an excess of ideas that could not all be practiced (performed), so we also had to think about how to condense themes or stick with a single relatable idea we could all go by

Two common types of rebellion are against socially fitting in (rebellion of non-conformity) and against adult authority (rebellion of non-compliance.) In both types, rebellion attracts adult attention by offending it.
https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/surviving-your-childs-adolescence/200912/rebel-cause-rebellion-in-adolescence
Parental rebellion challenges the themes of supervision, guidance and structure as young people come to emerge with their own sense of identity and purpose.

"Born to Rebel" (1997), Frank Sulloway posits that later born children tend to rebel more than first born. Some of his reasoning is because they identify less with parents, do not want to be clones of the older child or children who went before, and give themselves more latitude to grow in nontraditional ways

It is suggested that the young person declares:

"I refuse to be defined and treated as a child any more!" Now he knows how he doesn't want to be, but he has yet to discover and establish how he does want to be. Rather than "snap" at the child, it has been suggested there are other ways to respond: "what it takes is the gentle pressure of positive direction relentlessly applied."

Later on the child may want to rebel against parental approval: always being the good child; they want to shatter their attachments, and seek independence, even questioning their morals and codes;
parents might come to miss their closeness and compatibility; they eventually come to declare "nobody is going to order me around", at this point, the parents can let the consequences of this young person's action play out; they will find out sooner or later;
cf Wiley, Surviving Your Child's Adolescence .

Have you seen anything like it before?

I have not seen physical theatre on stage as such, however, I have seen it performed informally ,in the context of a school. A company came in and showcases their work, and it was refreshing in as much as the story was exaggerated using enlarged movements rather than relying entirely on subtleties. It is a style of theatre that interests me but like musical theatre I would wonder about how I would progress it into other areas and fields.

4. What themes emerged in the work you saw performed today? Explain what you thought of the pieces you saw.

In our piece, we played with someone not wanting to be touched as the part where were to include narrative (dialogue). It was short but to the point as we wanted to attempt to intensify the emotion by minimising the words and exploiting awkward pauses.

The other piece was , at first, rather ambigious and lacking in focus until they added more intention to what they were doing, and thought about what they wanted us ass an audience both to see, and what to focus on.

Thoughts on Babel

This play is obviously a play on two ideas; the theme of talking nonsense but also the idea of biblical rebellion from the story where the people who tried to build a tower to heaven had their plan foiled, and their tongued divided.

The play talks to multiple themes of discontent in the West, viz, isolation, loneliness, technology, inactivity, the trivialisation of everyday life, and meaninglessness. It is written provocatively, sometimes flowing, often breaking, and exploring multiple depths of these pathologies of the West, and other places. Other commentators had equally remarked that as technology brings us together in the abstract it does nothing to add much depth and meaning to our lives. Aldous Huxley similarly remarked that by saturating people’s minds with nonsense they lose the ability to effectively relate to each other and build constructively.

In thinking about how we might be performing this play, I think about a number of global conflicts in which countries were divided along, albeit somewhat arbitrary, racial lines. In many cases conflict ensued however, sometimes people have to communicate across language barriers and relate using other means, as is expounded in the theory of semiotics, which looks at what symbols mean within the context of social interactions. As aimlessness seems a them of the script perhaps we will explore themes of anonymity or even interchange and different characters explore different aspects of scripts.

They had a very dynamic choreography exploring and utilizing a number of sharp moves. and distinctive patterns.
To begin with, we were to create a few movements , and weave them in between each other. We were then told to squeeze the air out of these movements (to slow them down, emphasize them, or work closer, tighter). Finally, we were to make them smoother by blending the transitions before finally adding a narrative to each movement prior to introducing music (score.)
This final part was difficult as it encouraged us to think through the touch and reflect upon our movement. It also pressed us to create movements and then think about it afterwards, suggesting we always have meaning in actions and gestures which themselves are worthy of exploration, rather than simply imposing narrative upon them, we are urged to unpack and explore the narrative already inherent in them.
This ties into one of the philosophies of frantic assembly who encourage us to take pride in our inspirations and influences, irrespective of who they are or where they come from.

3.How can an audience take away meaning from physical pieces of theatre?

Like surrealist theatre, the style of frantic assembly presses us to unpack movement. There is somewhat an implicit assumption that people who deal with ideas rather than raw physical labour, are less important, or their work is less valuable, when really, there is little basis for this idea other than the dualistic bias which is born from an idolisation of Rene Descartes' mode of dualism. With raw physical labour we are reminded that actions have inherent meaning and even create further meaning . It can be understood across multiple levels so long as we are willing to interrogate what we see.

We are no longer passively absorbing what is being seen by challenged to follow this moving narrative and wrestle with the movements themselves to find a dialogue with might otherwise miss or ignore.

It was effective because it was somehting we were not used to seeing meaning from the outset, we were made to make new connections to the material. It broke from the conventional pattern of theatre that I have come to be accustomed to, despite detesting for the longest time. I personally prefer moving theatre as I can relate to it in as much as there are less layers and subtleties to be confused by. In classical theatre I often get lost really quickly, if not becuase of the language, but because it might fail to always live with the immediate and present moment. With the pieces we performing the relationship was always changing and urging us to not only get involved but be involved and stay with the piece.

Why do you think Frantic Assembly decided to choose to do this at this moment of the play, when they could have used dialogue instead?

In the theatre, we explored different movements, and were told to create a piece by experimenting with hand and foot (limb) placements from the position and context of a chair. These moves need clarity to compliment and accompany the stillness There has to be a definite quality to the actual gestures themselves and so, they need to be defined. Unlike actions thoughts can easily be confusing, and each thought might have a vague or conflicted image, or script in the mind (head) of someone imagining. Unlike thinking, actions are visible and , despite being open to multiple interpretation, can still be defined.

There was no ultimate resolve but the important thing was the process whereby we reflected upon what it is we are a company desired, and desire to create and build.

The day began with a physical warm up encouraging even more core work. After this we sat and watched the process of building a chair duet, as demonstrated by Frantic Assembly. We also got to see a school group constructing one to a popular Ed Sheeran song. We then got told to create an expert sequence of movements, in partners.

Our duet was very static to begin with until we were told that we were repeating movements, and also, at times, unclean. This provoked us to take our piece from a centred, stable position and explore more themes such as movements, contact, and touch.

To begin with we looked at a stage slap, highlighting that unlike other moves, more than likely it will simply happen, whoever, it became more difficult once we explored both a punch to the face, in which we hit the side of the face and "nap" the chest, as well as a punch to the chest, in which we quickly slap the chest with the outer part of the hand, before quickly retracting it.

We were then tasked with creating a fight sequence using 8 moves, however, this was after we had some watched some Frantic Assembly work, exploring their choreographed fight sequences as well as production of unison moves. We saw that rather than simulate fighting, we might even invoke the thought that something dangerous is about to happen.

It’s perhaps strange to see Dr Peterson, a neatly dressed Canadian professor, coalescing a youth movement around personal responsibility, marriage, and children. It’s not totally illogical, though. Unlike youth culture a generation ago, which was tribal and broadly counter-cultural, youth culture today seems far more fragmented.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/article/f1d7fed0-4ddf-4a8a-94b9-ea05f913cdd2

Camille Paglia compares him to Marshal McLuhan
https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/feb/07/how-dangerous-is-jordan-b-peterson-the-rightwing-professor-who-hit-a-hornets-nest

Toronto professor Jordan Peterson takes on gender-neutral pronouns

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-37875695

The student often finds more meaningful forms of escapism — ideological escapism. Students are for justice, Che Guevara t-shirts, and affirmative action. And the socialist organizations are waiting to recruit. The student’s “rent-a-crowd militance for the latest good cause is an aspect of his real impotence.”[141] The student serves the cause and the cause serves to justify the student’s subservience. The student activist consciously aligns their thinking with what they perceive to be that of an oppressed group (which they may or may not be a member of). Now they can speak for that group and articulate the desires of that group, usually phrased as demands made of the authorities. Every person, every group, must be represented. Representation is at the heart of the logic of modern politics, and its so-called enemies uphold this logic better than anyone. Such thinking is institutionalized among the academic Left, who are proud of their broad curriculum which includes all sorts of women’s studies, queer studies, African-American studies, etc. As long as students learn to demand “justice” for everyone, the possibility of revolutionary change can be ignored. Through appeals for justice or equal rights within the system, the academic Left perpetuates the system and its moralistic logic. And since academia is virtually defined by the dissociation of thought and action, no revolutionary theory could possibly thrive in this context; conversely, it is here that revolutionary ideology is at home, an object of passive consideration.

Is he a terrorist or a freedom fighter ? One idea was when towards the end Maia provided an idea for Natalies later scene, suggesting we start to pull at her.
It was a curious moment as for much of the time, not many of the members could see her vision and had to persist with enduring until the picture in her head became clear in theirs. It was also sensitive at it involved having to think through how we would relate to this vision and actually portray it.
