Appraisal & Brainstorming

Mr. Schulte consulted his digital learning network when he was uncertain how to improve his social justice research project unit. He connected with Mr. Cannon, who was able to collaborate with him to brainstorm creative ideas. The goal was to improve students' performance in writing arguments. They decided that implementing a blog post with peer reviews would provide an authentic audience and relevant feedback. Mr. Cannon suggested to clarify the guidelines for feedback and to have students focus on specific elements to review. This is meant to allow Mr. Schultz sufficient time to provide individual attention and assistance as needed and to facilitate discussion.

Burns et.al. (2017) relates the concept of performance feedback in promoting the transfer and maintenance of skill. They have demonstrated increased comprehension and improved use of strategies with feedback. In this particular study (p. 22), feedback was based on if the student:
1) read the questions,
2) read to determine the main idea,
3) identified common details
4) considered relevant titles,
5) reread when unsure how to answer questions.
