Media Literacy and Perspective

Task Overview

In today’s task, we are going to look at how the perspective of an image/video or a photographer can influence the message that the image sends to us as consumers. We are going to look at multiple images and videos and use them to evaluate claims about an event.

Standards and Learning Objectives

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.7

Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.8

Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.9

Analyze how two or more texts address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge or to compare the approaches the authors take.

Texts

Anchor Photo (Whole Class analysis): Inauguration Photo

Image 1: Crowd Size Photo

Image 2: Crowd Size Photo

Video 1: Sean Spicer's Speech on the Inauguration

Video 2: Comparing Inauguration Crowd Sizes Video

Task Directions

Whole class analysis

To start this activity, we are going to look at a photo and see what information we can discover.

As a class, we will answer the following questions:

What is going on in this picture?

What specific evidence can you find?

What more can you find?

What do you think that the person who took this photo wanted people to understand?

View anchor photo of Trump’s inauguration from the dais.

Now that we have figured out what the photographer wanted us to understand, let’s see if we can write a caption for the photo when it appears in the newspaper. We want to make sure that it sounds like a newspaper caption and that it describes the image.

Small group work

Now let’s take a look at some photos/videos in small groups and see what additional information these texts will tell us about the same event. Answer the questions above about your image/video and develop a caption. Your group will be responsible for presenting your image/video and caption to the class.

Split students into 4 groups and provide groups with either a wide angle view of Trump’s inauguration, Obama’s inauguration, Sean Spicer’s statement about attendance, a reporter’s statement of attendance.

Exit Ticket

Based on all of the information that we now have from the images and videos, what do you think of the following tweet/clip? Cite evidence from the images and videos.

Trump speaking at CIA headquarters

Assessment

Media Literacy Task Rubric | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1
Anchor Photo Questions |
4- Students provided complete answers with evidence from the image. |
3- Students provided complete answers with some evidence from the image. | 2- Students provided complete answers with no evidence from the image. |
1- Students did not provide complete answers.

Image/Video Captions |
4- Students provided a caption that fully describes their specific image or video.
