Mrs. Dalloway in Bond Street”—along with the unfinished“The Prime Minister”—served as the genesis of Woolf’s arguably best-known novel,Mrs. Dalloway. That work follows Clarissa Dalloway—originally introduced in Woolf’sfirst novel, The Voyage Out—on a single day as she plans a party to be given thatevening. The short story explores what Woolf would come to term “moments of being,”those experiences that form the patterns of life and the experience of life, as Mrs.Dalloway walks down Bond Street in London.

On her way to buy gloves for the party she is to give that evening (in Mrs. Dalloway, it isflowers that Clarissa intends to “buy herself”), Mrs. Dalloway ruminates on the sightsand sounds of the city, encounters an old friend, remembers and reminisces. But hers isnot the only perspective; she not only sees and remarks, but is seen and remarked upon.Hers is one of the many perspectives in the kaleidoscope of the city. London itselfbecomes a character, literally chiming in with the sounds of Big Ben marking the time

Time and history can serve as important points of discussion. “Mrs. Dalloway in BondStreet” observes a “seam” in time, a split resulting from World War I. Clarissa’sobservations are divided, almost naturally, into “before the war” and “after the war.”There is a marked sense of loss and death informing her perception, indeed theperspectives of all around her. Bond Street becomes a site of history unfolding as Mrs.Dalloway ponders her great-great-grandfather walking down the same London street, which is yet not the same, for so much and so little changes in a hundred years.
