I think that the artists has used a toilet that is very small to symbolize how the orcas are living in very wretched and disgusting confined conditions at sea world.

The whale is very much visible larger than the trainer and that shows that the whale has the potential of hurting the trainer but seems to be obeying (but it is because he is threatened?)

The toilet also seems to be broken, which means that not only has it been used multiple times but also to the point where it is unusable again and yet, the whale is being kept in it.

The piece of art is also on a battered street which shows that even though many people are coming to watch the shows, no one really seems to be seeing the full truth behind what is happening to the Orcas

ARGUMENTS
In your argument you stated that blackfish doesn't give the full truth and that the advantages that are coming out of it are much more than that is presented in Blackfish. However the fact that a piece of art like this exists means that means it is a common concept and it's not just blackfish that see the damage. Therefore that means that the advantages do not suffice for the damage that is happening.

In your article you stated that “They adapt very well to life in a zoological setting.” However, statistics show that they do not. It is recorded that there has been 70 plus recorded injuries caused by killer whales. Is this what you think being well adaptive is? There has been multiple incidents where the whales attack each other. for example, Tillikum was repeatedly attacked by the female orcas and his rake marks would be bleeding during show.

- add stats comparing the stats to the wild
- whales have bad teeth from niting on cage walls (sign of depression and anxiety)
- not only are you not well educated in keeping these whales safe but you know that they are not adapting well yet you are still keeping them in captivity

Furthermore, you talk about [continuously say] "SeaWorld is one of the world's most respected zoological institution", however, it is ethically and morally wrong to continue keeping [continuously keep] animals captive. As one news anchor stated, "if you were in a bathtub for 25 years don't you think you'd get a little psychotic."

Banksy's satirical take on the darkness of performance is one with many layers and connotations that paint an obvious funny picture at first but when looked into deeper, there are more. The whale is coming out of the toilet as the waste from the toilet goes into the ocean. After all, doors can go both ways. An interesting part of his work is that the whale has nowhere to go after it jumps through the hoop, it hasn't been allowed to land as it is unsure of what is going to happen to it. The hoop is yellow as the color represents fear, as the orca is put in an uncomfortable situation where it is afraid and confused.

I found out that although there are claims made by seaworld that say that they spend a large sum of money on their scientific research, there is a lot of evidence that states that this is hypocritical. Seaworlds expenditure for saving the whales has been 6 tenthousandth of

proof that seaworld is aware of the animals being mistreated:
https://timesofsandiego.com/business/2017/06/29/seaworld-leopard-sharks-move-to-zoo-penguin-area/

https://timesofsandiego.com/business/2017/06/29/seaworld-leopard-sharks-move-to-zoo-penguin-area/

ARGUMENT:
-------------------
In an interview with CNN, Fred Jacobs stated that they focus on scientific research to ensure better lives for the whales; this is contradicted with they fact that they only spend 0.0006 percent of their money on research. As well as that, people have interviewed SeaWorld trainers and managers asking them certain questions about orcas, and many answered with false facts and statistics; many trainers are not educated before hand. Not only do your employees and their lack of knowledge

You can also see the toilet as the treatment of orcas in different sea life institutions. the toilet can also represent flushing away the happiness and families of orcas instead of flushing away the sadness which the SEAWORLD tells us.

Bansky's use of a small toilet in proportion to the the massive whale is too show how the whales are forced into/out of something that doesn't suit them. Toilets have connotations of flushing things away, representative of SeaWorld flushing away all the problems and concerns of the animals. We cannot see the identity of the trainer and therefore it can symbolise how the concern and care for trainers is hidden and irrelevant to the company.

It is human knowledge that whales require large amount of space and an open, free environment to stay mentally and physically healthy. In your interview you stated that they only "prefer" open area... clearly that is incorrect. Also this idea is depicted by Banksy's artwork, animals are living in an environment in which they are captivated.

In many books the idea of the teeth of the orca's have been exposed and their dental pulp has now been exposed to harmful bacteria.

It is undeniable that a killer whale can only be happy in the ocean. Banksy's art portrays the extremity of the confinement and restriction that the whales have to go through purely for a good show. The toilet is symbolic of the irrationally small and unhealthy pools that these wild animals are caged in.These unnatural conditions could not be more accurately portrayed.

SeaWorld maintains their position on the issue of the size of the tank where the whales are kept. "While a killer whale can and occasionally might travel as much as 100 miles in a day, it should be said that swimming that distance is not integral to a whale's health and well-being". This is wrong. Orcas are used to being in a wide open ocean, having plenty of space to swim around. Being kept in such a small container with other whales that they did not grow up with raises tension, and causes the whales to become aggressive. Furthermore, anyone can see that the whales are not completely healthy. Every male killer whale within SeaWorld has a collapsed dorsal fin. To explain this, SeaWorld firmly states that even in the wild 25% of whales have a collapsed dorsal fin, but this is not true. In fact, less than 1% of whales in the wild have a collapsed dorsal fin

Bansky has created a piece of artwork that demonstrates the horrible conditions that the orcas are kept in. The fact that pieces of art like this exist only proves that other people have also noticed this. Bansky doesn't even need to explain his art work with any words because almost seconds after looking at it you can tell what he is trying to convey. He is trying to convey how small the enclosure that the orcas are kept in are by having the orca jump out of a toilet (and a small one at that). The hoop that the trainer is having the orca jump through in the statue represents how they are only brought out of their small enclosures to perform cliche tricks. It could also represent how they are forced to do things that they don't want to do. The trainer is in scuba gear to show how the trainers don't really matter to the company and can be covered up as an irrelevant detail.

The toilet bowl represents the 'fish bowl' that it lives in. The toilet flushes things, which could symbolize the fact that the killer whales in captivity are having their lives flushed down the toilet. There is no hope for them.

Argument:

-The way that animals in captivity - specifically orcas- are treated, can be very easily manipulated and analyzed by artists such as Banksy. esponding to the art, it shows how we as humans have become so aware of what is going on around us, and how orcas are being treated. To the untrained eye, the sculpture would still represent how orcas are being misused.

I believe that you have failed to identify the mental trauma you put these highly intelligent animals through. I am not simply stating, but i am informing you on the change that is needed to be done. According to many reputed organizations, wild Orcas form strong social bonds with members of their pods. However, having their family stripped away from them and being introduced to an alien environment changes everything they know. Orcas from different pods around the world are forced to live together, causing inter-orca conflict

The toilet is a representation of something disgusting. Anything that goes in a toilet is doomed to a fixed path-to go to the sewer. It cannot change paths and suddenly go to a park. This could be an analogy for the confined pools the orca is forced to live in and the path humans pre plan for them.
3. The trainer is almost obscured as if they do not have an identity and are just following what they are told to do.

This could be an analogy for how seaward blames the trainers for accidents that happen in seaward like when they blamed dawn for having her hair in a ponytail.

Banksy's art has many subtle hints to context.
- A toilet flushes things; this is symbolic of the fact that Orcas are being harmed and killed in the process of humans obtaining them in a habitat that is proving harmful to them. They are being disposed of as a result of SeaWorlds lack of consideration for these beings.

SeaWorld hunts for whales and takes them out of their habitats to cage them in foreign a foreign environment. They are being 'flushed' out of their homes into a small, enclosed atmosphere. This is reflected in Banksy's artwork; the whale being flushed into a small toilet, trying to get out and failing. No wonder these vile incidents have happened; these creatures are called hyper-intelligent for a reason; they have minds of their own, and with a mind their aways comes a soul. In treating the Orca's within the SeaWorld compound with no compassion; like robots; you subject them to a life in.

The picture clearly shows the expectations the trainers have from the orcas, which leads to the conclusion that failing to meet these expectations results in punishment. Furthermore, the fact that it comes out of a tiny toilet is suggestive of perhaps its home in Sea World and how the animals come out of a small tank, perform their best and are then flushed back to where they came from.

I read Advika's book. Since the person is trying the get the whale to jump through the ring it is as if they are trying to force their 'friendship' onto the whale, or at least so much as the public sees it as 'friendship'.

This relates to how SeaWorld as a whole is making the whales do their tricks and show against their will. SeaWorld is capturing these whales at young ages and taking them away from their parents, which even for humans can be traumatising- and obviously is since there are so many cases of the orcas going wild and attacking their trainers.

In the interview, Jacobs called one of the SeaWorld parks a "rescue program", as if the parks boost the wellbeing of orcas and allows them to live up to their full potential. However, upon research, I can see that in captivity, for sea whales to swim their full average of 100 miles a day, they have to swim around 1200 laps around their restricted and cramped tanks- which is actually one of the main causes for whales' dorsal (bent) fins. dorsal fin colapse
On the contrary to a statement that SeaWorld released, dorsal fins are not healthy, and in fact, almost one-hundred percent of adult male whales in captivity have completely or partially dorsal fins, whilst in the wild less than one percent of whales have collapsed dorsal fins.

The toilet is small and represents SeaWorld's pools as there was not enough space for the orcas and quite dirty. The hoop also represents the trainers making the orcas do something which is not integral for their survival, the hoop will also barely fit the orca, emphasising the small size of the pools that barely fit the orcas. The trainer is wearing black, implying ambiguity which might lead to us believing that SeaWorld doesn't draw attention to its trainers until an incident occurs which ends in SeaWorld blaming them.

If turned into an argument:
SeaWorld representative in the CNN interview states that travelling a 100 miles a day is not integral for the orcas. It could be argued that the daily shows are also not integral for the orca as they cannot be classified as mental stimulation; it does not stimulate the orca's highly emotional mind, it only reinforces the orca to believe that they need to perform for their nutrition. Is that why the orcas 'want to be here' in SeaWorld?

An argument using another research book:
In the interview with CNN, Fred Jacobs claims that killer whales 'adapt very well to a zoological setting'. This is factually incorrect as the orcas in captivity have frequently shown hyper-aggression- to humans or other whales. This hyper-aggression may stem from the boredom many animals experience in such zoological settings or from the traumatic events that such organizations cause on these animals. A prime example of this is the common lie told by SeaWorld which claims that the orcas are in 'their families' which are actually a collection of orcas who speak completely different languages and come from different pods, if a calf is born it is soon separated from its mother and shipped off: is this an ideal situation for an animal which learns its skills for survival through its mother? This traumatic experience causes the young calf to have stress, a small thing for humans but orcas are highly intelligent and social beings, they have a larger range of emotions and feel them quite strongly; these type of problems deeply affect the orca's psyche. These behavioural problems therefore prove how orcas don't adapt to the zoological setting very well, instead these emotions build up until the orca decides to 'play' with the instructors, often leaving them dead or injured.
To access research - app.bookcreator.com

They're cramming huge 8m killer whales, used to swimming miles and miles every day in their natural habitat, into tiny, unnatural pools. It's also evident that they don't care about the whales' well being either, as these harsh living conditions lead to damage to their fins, as well as scratches and cuts inflicted by the restless, feuding whales.
Seaworld spends 6 ten thousandths of a percent of their total revenue of preserving wild orcas. However, when he claimed that the restricted tanks are sufficient for these orcas, it raises many ethical issues. Orcas can swim 100 miles a day, yet they are cramped in this tank that is the size of a toilet bowl in their perspective. As he mentioned, the orcas don't have to swim that much however we are ripping away their right to do so. This in turn, just as it would for humans, will negatively impact them phsycologically and physically. Imagine being restricted to a bath tub.
