There are forty species of freshwater mussels that live in the waters on the Ohio River. There are six critically endangered mussel species: fanshell, pink mucket, sheepnose, spectaclecase, snuffbox, and rayed bean. Mussels are important to a river ecosystem being healthy. They are what is called filter feeders. They feed on things in the water and this helps to keep down the sediment, silt, and pollution in the water.

There are almost 200 species of birds that use what we call refuge lands and waters in the Ohio River each year. Many of the birds are only passing through while they migrate but they make stops along the Ohio River to feed and rest. The refuge, or safe place, is between two bird migration routes, the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyways. This means that there are a lot of diverse species along the river. This refuge gives birds a high quality habitat while they migrate. It is really common to see songbirds, waterfowl, and birds of prey are all common sights on Ohio River.

The area that is around the Ohio River is a special or unique habitat which makes it a great home for many different types of animals. Frogs, toads, and turtles live all through the refuge. There are many dragonflies, damselflies, and butterflies that can be seen in the warm season.

Nearly 200 species of birds use our lands and surrounding waters each year. In addition, water from parts of New York, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama drain into tributaries that empty into the Ohio.

The Ohio River is the source of drinking water for more than three million people.Over 25 million people, almost 10% of the US population, live in the Ohio River Basin. There are 20 dams on the Ohio River, managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. The dams have greatly changed the flow of the river, creating a series of very slow moving pools rather than a free flowing river. This makes the river muddier, which is harmful to benthic (bottom-dwelling) organisms. In addition, the Corps regularly dredges the river, disrupting wildlife and increasing turbidity.

History: On June 22, 1969 somehow a the Cuyahoga river caught fire!

Location: It starts in Cuyahoga and ends in Cleveland

Length:

Why is it important?

Who gets their water from the Cuyahoga River?

Wildlife: Aubrey, Olivia, Nadia
Hi, today we're going to teach you about Cuyahga river wildlife. We will learn about the steel head trout, bullhead, bluegill, bass, crappie, and more. I hope you like it.

White Crappies are longer than Black Crappies. Black Crappies wider than White crappies. Black Crappies eat more crustaceans and insects than White Crappies do. All crappies are very common sport fish in the United States. During the spring crappies lay eggs in abundance which make them targets for fishermen. White Crappies can survive living in turbid or cloudy water easier than Black Crappies.
This is about the Great Blue Heron. This is what the great blue heron looks. Great Blue Herons are the largest heron in North America. The Great Blue Heron is a really big bird. It has a gray body and black and chestnut accents. It also has a very large neck and legs. Great Blue Herons are very, very tall they are 3 to 4.5 feet. I hope you enjoyed learning about the Great Blue Heron.

Here are some quick facts about the steelhead trout. This is the steelhead trouts scientific name: Oncorhynchus mykiss. One time steelhead trouts were considered a trout species but biologists have discovered them to be more like Pacific salmon than other trout. There is a fish that lives in the freshwater called a rainbow trout that is like the steelhead trout.
The River Otter is made for swimming they have a sleek body, webbed feet, with short legs. River otters have dense or thick fur to keep them warm, a beaver-like tail, nostrils that can close underwater, and small ears. River otters can be over a meter long, from their head down to their tail. They weigh up to 30 pounds. Males are bigger than females.
There is something that is called the Amazon river dolphin and I’m going to tell you about it. The Amazon river dolphin or pink river dolphin can be found in the Amazon river and the rivers the connect. The Amazon river dolphin is actually the largest freshwater dolphin. Amazon river dolphins eat fish, crabs, and catfish. They barely get hunted by humans and other animals.
Did you know that turtles are reptiles? Turtles have hard shell’s. These upper shells is called a carapace. It is so hard that it protects them like a shield. Turtles also have a lower shell. This shell is called a plastron. Almost all of the species of turtles when scared or about to get attacked by predators can put their heads in their shell. Turtles have been alive for almost 215 million years. Like all reptiles turtles have cold blood.

They can eat prey that is up to 25 to 35 percent of their body length. If they have a good environment they can live up to 10 to 16 years. An estimated 30 million people fish for largemouth bass in the United States.
When male bluegills are breeding they are so, so colorful. Some states use bluegills as bait. Some people call the bluegill beam, sunfish, or copper nose. Female bluegills can lay between 10,000 and 60,000 eggs. When bluegills are little they eat microscopic animals.
Bullhead trout is a part of the salmon family. Bullhead is more north than other group of freshwater fish.
We’re going to tell you about the northern pike. The northern pike has a snout that is filled with teeth that are long and sharp. They have bright yellow eyes. There is a type of fish called Muskellunge. Northern Pike and Muskellunge actually live in the same lakes.
