Koji Kondo's influence on me stems from his work, most notably, in the Mario series. He is the reason why my favourite music genre is Jazz fusion, since the inspiration for his own music comes from various jazz fusion bands. Koji Kondo has been with Nintendo every since the beginning, and continues to this day to create unforgettable compositions.

Go Ichinose is my favourite gamefreak composer. I love the compositions he's made and he has influenced a lot of the music i currently create since I compose music for a pokemon fangame. Go Ichinose is mostly recognised for his insane slap bass usage. The methods he uses to compose also reflect how I compose my music.

T-SQUARE (band)

T-Square is an extremely popular Japanese jazz fusion band that has had a significant influence on Koji Kondo's compositions. Identifying the mix between funk and jazz is hard to tell when listening to 8-bit chiptune melodies, but listening hard enough, you'll notice the use of syncopation in the original overworld theme from Super Mario Bros, which can imply a swing rhythm. When composing this theme, Koji Kondo took reference from a melody in the T-Square song called "Sister Marian", which ended up being its main motif. Coincidentally, the song name can be abbreviated to SM, as with Super Mario (SM).

Just like T-Square, Koji Kondo took inspiration from Piper's music too. For example, in the song "Summer Breeze", the same progression and rhythm that the guitar is playing can be heard in the Star Theme that's also from Mario.

Yet another Jazz Fusion band influencing Koji Kondo's music. This band produced more dynamic songs, in the sense of using unique chord progressions and can sometimes even be considered their own genres. For example, their song "Lets Not Talk About It", starts off very bass heavy and is extremely unpredictable up until the saxophone joins in. In fact, Koji Kondo used this song to influence the Underground Theme. It uses the exact same notes in the exact same pattern (The infamous "Dunna Dunna Dunna").

Junichi Masuda

Due to the lack of interviews on the topic, it was hard to find the original influences for Go Ichinose. However, in one interview where gamefreak were showing off their compositions in Cubase during the Pokemon Sun and Moon era, they explained their composition process, in which someone in the team creates first version of the track, and then the rest of the team (including Junichi Masuda, Minako Adachi and Shota Kageyama) would make their own versions using the same progressions, and then stitch the best of each version together. So in short, they influence each other. Masuda is the most well known composer for game freak, rivalling Go Ichinose. Both are very different with their music approaches, which is why I prefer Go Ichinose over Masuda. I would even go as far as to say Masuda's music lacks rhythm or any syncopation. However, Go Ichinose still looks up to him.

Minako Adachi is also part of the creative process behind pokemon compositions. She has been working at game freak since gen 5 (2010), and is known for creating a few battle themes here and there. Looking though the game soundtracks, she can be seen mostly working on fanfares for winning. Not much is known about her relationship with Go Ichinose, however they have collaborated on composition in the company in the past, with the most recent being the Area Zero theme in Scarlet and Violet.

According to my friend who also loves Go Ichinose's music, nobody likes Shota Kageyama except for himself. He's worked most notably in generations 6 and 7. Personally, I feel his music captures pokemon pretty nicely, as it feels upbeat and adventurous. I personally know least about him compared to other game freak composers. He also worked on the Pokemon Master's soundtrack, which mostly consists of revamped arrangements of music over the generations.

I love video game compositions. There is nothing even close that I could love more than a limited-synthy interpretation of an instrument. My inspirations are from the pokemon series as well as the mario series. I don't listen to main stream artists either. I specifically love mario and pokemon compositions for their dynamic instrumentation and their experimental genres. I just can't get enough of it. My love for this type of music has lead me into making compositions for fan projects, as well as arrangements when I have the time, in which I'll upload them to my youtube channel.
