The debris could represent something that the person is looking for, and the small amount of protection this person got as an African American boy could be what the blanket represents.

Figure is portrayed as small and is made to seem vulnerable, but he also seems strong because he is still standing with an area of dead/debris around him.

He uses a lot of depth and shading to make the face really stand out.  She still has her dignity. The places on his face that are lighter because of the light positioning are smudged. There is nothing going on in background, which gives all the focus to the face. He looks somber, or might be thinking, because he is looking off to the side.
