Trong thời đại “đa nhiệm”, chuyện biết nhiều ngoại ngữ được coi là “của hiếm vàng mười”. Ai mà không ngưỡng mộ người vừa nói tiếng Anh lưu loát, vừa “bắn” tiếng Trung, tiếng Nhật như gió? Nhưng câu hỏi đặt ra là: liệu học nhiều thứ tiếng có thật sự “lợi đủ đường”? Hay lại giống kiểu “mười nghề không thạo một”? Có người học ba bốn ngôn ngữ nhưng không ngôn ngữ nào viết nổi một email tử tế.

Ở Việt Nam, học sinh phổ thông đã phải “gồng mình” học tiếng Anh, giờ nhiều trường còn yêu cầu thêm tiếng Nhật, tiếng Hàn. Trong khi đó, nhiều người cho rằng học một ngôn ngữ thật giỏi – nói như bản xứ, viết như nhà văn – còn “đắt giá” hơn biết nhiều nhưng hời hợt. Người học chuyên sâu thường làm việc hiệu quả hơn, nhất là trong ngành dịch thuật, nghiên cứu, hay đàm phán quốc tế.

Tuy vậy, không thể phủ nhận rằng biết nhiều ngôn ngữ giúp mở rộng tư duy, linh hoạt trong giao tiếp và tiếp cận văn hóa đa chiều. Tại châu Âu, đa ngôn ngữ gần như là “bình thường mới” – người Thụy Sĩ có thể dùng ba bốn ngôn ngữ hàng ngày mà không thấy “quá sức”. Vấn đề không phải là học nhiều hay ít, mà là học đến đâu và dùng thế nào. Nhiều ngôn ngữ, nhưng tâm lý “sưu tầm” thì cũng chỉ để khoe. Một ngôn ngữ thôi, nhưng dùng được cho đời – ấy mới gọi là “biết”.

Background (English)

But is multilingualism really “all gain, no pain”? Or is it like chasing too many rabbits and catching none? Many learners juggle three or four languages, yet can’t write a proper email in any of them.

In Vietnam, students already struggle with English—and now many schools add Japanese or Korean to the mix. Some argue that mastering one language to near-native fluency—speaking like a local, writing like a novelist—is more valuable than half-baked knowledge of many. In fields like translation, academia, and negotiation, depth trumps breadth.

Still, there's no denying the cognitive and cultural perks of multilingualism. In Europe, speaking three or four languages daily is “the new normal”—Swiss citizens switch tongues effortlessly without feeling overwhelmed. The real issue isn’t how many languages one learns, but how well they’re learned and used. Multiple languages with a “collect them all” mindset? That’s vanity. One language used with purpose? That’s value.

While deep mastery of one language may sharpen expertise, I believe learning multiple languages offers broader horizons. Both approaches have merit, but the true benefit lies not in the count—but in the context and competence.

Cứ mỗi lần đến tiết học ngoại ngữ, trong lớp thế nào cũng có vài bạn “toát mồ hôi hột” vì không nhớ nổi từ vựng, không phát âm nổi âm “th” hay “r”. Giáo viên nhắc hoài “practice makes perfect” mà học sinh thì thầm nghĩ “em practice hoài mà vẫn… imperfect”. Rồi có người đúc kết: “Có đứa sinh ra để học tiếng, có đứa sinh ra để… trồng rau nuôi gà.” Từ đó, ý kiến cho rằng: nếu học ngoại ngữ làm khổ học sinh, thì tại sao phải bắt ép?

Ở Việt Nam, chuyện học sinh học 7–10 năm tiếng Anh mà vẫn không dám mở miệng nói không phải hiếm. Trong khi đó, nhiều học sinh có năng khiếu nghệ thuật, toán, kỹ thuật – lại bị đánh giá thấp chỉ vì… điểm tiếng Anh lẹt đẹt. Nhưng liệu có nên vì vậy mà loại bỏ ngoại ngữ khỏi chương trình?

Teachers repeat, “Practice makes perfect,” but students silently mutter, “I’ve practiced, still far from perfect.” Some conclude, “Some are born to learn languages, others to raise chickens.” Hence the argument: if language classes bring misery, why make them mandatory?

In Vietnam, it’s not uncommon for students to study English for 7–10 years and still avoid speaking. Meanwhile, those with talents in art, math, or mechanics are sidelined due to poor English scores. So should we scrap language requirements?

In today’s globalised world, knowing a second language isn’t just a “plus”—it’s a basic survival skill, like swimming or using the internet. Not every student will become an interpreter, but exposure to a foreign language broadens horizons, improves empathy, and allows at least basic global communication. The real issue isn’t “who can learn” but “how do we teach without killing motivation?” When students fear the subject more than they fear failure, it’s the method—not the learner—that needs rethinking.

Suggested Thesis Statement

While not all children excel at language learning, I firmly disagree that schools should drop it. Language is a life skill, not a talent contest. The problem lies not in students’ limits, but in rigid systems that fail to support diverse learners.
