This has to be one of my kids favourite books. It tells a story about a boy and a tree's friendship. In depth it is about giving and taking in relationships, but it also makes you contemplate love, sacrifice, and gratitude. My kids let me read it to them when they were roughly 4 years old. They continued to read it until they were about 10 years old.

https://youtu.be/XFQZfeHq9wo

It’s like a joyful travelogue that celebrates three generations of women: grandmother, mother, and daughter through a beautifully woven pattern of “threes.” As the family journeys across India, by boat and train, we (as a reader) get to travel with them to where three oceans meet. With details like three languages, three ways of seasoning their dosas, and the strands of a braid, the story highlights connection across generations, the joy of exploring together, and the meaning of belonging to more than one place and culture.

LaRocca, R., & Sreenivasan, A.

This book follows a little girl named Melinda who is truly having a difficult day. After a bad sleep, she is rushed to school by her mother, encounters a mean boy in class, and falls in a puddle. Melinda articulates big thoughts throughout the book, such as feeling like no one is listening to her. I love that at the end, she feels better once she has been reassured how much she is loved and has a chance to reconnect and co-regulate with her mother. I also love the page where she calms down in the tub while feeling like a noodle in a bowl of chicken soup. I think this is great book to affirm that some kids have bad days and feel angry sometimes.

Fernandes, E. (1987). A difficult day. The mother kisses her son's hand to let him know he is loved, not alone, and that he could have a part of her with him anywhere. When he is alone and feels scared he remembers his mother's love and no longer feels afraid. This book demonstrates how the power of love can be brought with you wherever you go to over come any obstacle.

Penn, A. (1993) The kissing hand Scholastics Inc.

The book follows a little bear who struggles with anxiety in his everyday life. Little bear is scared of saying his ABC's, playing soccer, and the monsters under his bed. We follow his struggles for a while, but soon little bear discovers a way to lessen his anxiety and to face his fears by communicating, showing us the importance of communicating your feelings with those you trust.

Sanders, J.

I remember reading this book when I was younger, and it really stuck with me because it explains feelings in such a simple way. The book teaches that everyone has an invisible “bucket,” and when we are kind, helpful, or caring, we fill someone’s bucket (including our own). When we say or do unkind things, it dips their bucket. I like this book because it helps children understand emotions, kindness, and how their actions affect others. I think it would be a great book to use in early childhood settings to support positive behaviour and encourage empathy and respectful relationships.

From showing how people help others in their jobs and careers, to showing how children help each other at school and on the playground, and giving examples of how families support each other, this book would be a valuable tool in demonstrating to children the importance of being kind, compassionate, and supportive towards the people in our lives. This book closely relates to guidance principle #12: Modelling by demonstrating how acts of kindness can affect those around us, and the value of modelling those behaviours for children in our care.

Lynea Gillen, & Swarner, K.

This book follows Bo a glow stick, who feels broken and dull while all his friends get turned into bright, fun glow things. He starts out really sad and left out, but with some gentle nudges, he figures out he’s got his own soft, special glow inside and out. I love that it is all about self-esteem, owning your uniqueness, and sparking that beautiful creativity that every kid has. I hope they grow up trusting their own light—even if it’s different or not as loud as everyone else’s. It’s great for chatting about feeling “enough” and respecting each kid’s own way of shining. You can fill other peoples buckets, when you give them a smile, give them a compliment or do somthing kind for them. You can aslo dip from other peoples buckets like when you call them names or ignore someone.
