History - Laurant Clerc Village

Visiting the village that Clerc was born was like stepping into the past. It was amazing to see where ASL got its roots. Seeing the actual place where he was born was surreal. The whole experience was completed with a trip into the bat caves. I got to over come my fear of tight spaces, if just for the moment, to follow Himal in our pursuit to see a bat. We failed in our mission but had a lot of fun searching!

The Louve was another part of the history of Paris that was amazing to set foot in. Seeing the Mona Lisa in person was cool, even if she was much smaller than I originally thought. I also enjoyed the egyption history lesson that we recieved from the guide. While there was no direct links to Deaf history, it was a great opportunity to be exposed to French Sign Language.

St. Jacques Deaf School was so facinating. We got to learn the epic history of the school, its influence on Deaf history as a whole, and how it continues to have influence there. We got to chat with some of the students that still attend the school and to see some adorable children that were visiting. It offered another peak into the Deaf world.

This was one of the coolest things that we did. I am love learning different languages so gaining some French signs was an amazing opportunity for me. We also got to have a lot of fun doing it! The game where we passed the pole around to see what everyone would do was hilarious. I hope that the theater is ok after the flooding the experienced while we were there. It is an amazing thing and I hope it continues for a long time to come.

Getting to have some of our tours done in French Sign Language was super interesting, if confusing at times. It was an awesome challenge and really cool to see the similarities and differences between American and French sign language. I really appreciated the way that they were all so patient with us when we didn't understand right away. They would explain more or get Himal or Darien to step in to help. I felt like they were really passionate about the topics they were covering. It was a wonderful experience to have.

The Eiffel Tower was a lot more jaw-droppingly amazing than I had anticipated. It truly made me feel like I was in Paris. To have such an iconic image in front of you is really surreal. Getting the opportunity to go up it as the sun was setting was also amazing. Darien had the right idea with making us wait for the right night even though we were all anxious to see it. It was truly an experience that I will never forget

This was another amazing sight. It was huge and so was the history behind it. The fact that it was started by Napolean and the Allies marched through it after winning World War II gives it significant historical weight. The climb to the top was brutal but the view made it all worth it. The sight of the city from that height was breath-taking.

The grandest of sights seen on this trip was Versailles and its gardens. Although the tour of the castle was hot and crowded, it was packed with crazy facts. For example, who knew the king would have people come watch him dress? The gardens were also breath-taking. I wish I had more time to explore them and discover their secrets.

A big part of a culture, in my opinion, is the food. It was important to me to experience the things that were considered 'French'. Some of my favorite dishes were the ones that were french. The very first night in Lyon, I had a crayfish rissoto that was amazing. I had never had crayfish before, but after that I made sure to try as many new things as possible. I even tried snails on our last night in Paris and I was pleasanly suprised that they were declisious. I even got to try some macoroons.
