There are a plentiful amount of people that have purchased or used a cellular device during the 21st century. It goes without saying that there are a great amount of people that use these devices when it isn't necessary. Driving with a cell phone is something that occurs quite often and the consequences that follow occurs just as often as well. This presentation will discuss the psychological factors that occur with cell phone related driving, as well as talking about the limitations to driving with a cell phone.

The first psychological factor that can influence the usage of cell phone use in a motor vehicle is the obligation to pick up the phone in order to respond to someone else. Sending messages from a cell phone can be fairly fast, almost as if an actual conversation is being held out in person. In this photo, I tried to demonstrate how sending messages over phone can act and look in a conversational setting.

Sending messages from a phone can be sometimes quite slow, but it is more often for the message to be sent in intervals of less than a second. Having messages sent so quickly, it might give pressure for someone that received a message to respond as fast as they can, so they can carry out the conversation without the worry of leaving someone out of the conversation. In this photo, I had one of my friends time how long it took for one message to be sent. This isn't at all conclusive to the overall time it takes on average for a message to be sent, but its still pretty fast regardless.

By taking this image of my friend and placing the Snapchat logo over him is not only comical to me, but it is also relevant to a lot of people who own a cell phone today. Snapchat is an app that allows users to send photos to friends for them to view in a short amount of time. With Snapchat, it is much easier for people to show others what they're doing without expressing with text. Although its an alternative form of communication, it still require some sort of attention to the phone, which may cause problems if you are driving while using this app.

...This isn't true in most cases. What happens as a result to this mindset is that some of these people (not all) will use their cell phones with the belief that they'll be fine with their phones because they're 'good' drivers. This might also result in a little more reckless driving behavior, whether it is speeding or not wearing a seatbelt. In both images, I tried to convey how my friend is thinking about being an amazing drag racer and then showing his overall facial expression when he is driving in real life. He is also not wearing his seatbelt if you didn't catch that.

The last psychological factor that could attribute would be multitasking. Out of all the psychological factors, this one that contributes the most because its something that associates the most when someone uses their cell phone while they're doing another activity. One activity that a lot people do is walk. More often than not, you will find at least one person walking with a cell phone in their hands. People also use their cell phones while their studying, I can't blame them I do the same thing myself. Overall, its very common for someone to use their phone and do another activity at the same time. All this image portrays is the idea of multitasking and how it can be used in a plethora of activities such as playing the guitar.

Usually from my experience, I've seen some of my friends hold their cell phone in their right hand and they usually have their heads tilted down to observe the phone instead of the road.

There are many things that can be done to prevent cell phone usage while driving. What is most important to me is making sure that young drivers are aware of this danger, along with other potential life threatening scenarios. This photo shows my mom scolding this young inept driver (my sister) about using her cell phone while she is driving. This is just one example on how to prevent this problem, and there are many others ways to prevent cell phone distraction in relation to driving.
