Greetings everyone and welcome to RSCH 503: Research Methods and Biostatistics. As Course Chair, I like to stop by and wish students a productive and enjoyable quarter. I live and work in Asheville, North Carolina and have just celebrated my 11th anniversary of working at Drexel as a full-time geographically remote faculty member. Winter is here in the Great Smokey Mountains and, the air is crisp. I often walk my dog, Smoke, in the woods and enjoy the fresh air and all of the sights, sounds, and critters that are all a part of the local nature (lots of bears, wild turkeys, bunnies, and, we definitely avoid the bobcats). I am a forensic psychiatric nurse and all of my research studies have utilized a mixed-methods design (one of the several designs that you will learn about in detail during the quarter ahead) to examine the intrapsychic impact and related behaviors in children who have been exposed to homicide, crime, and/ or sudden violent death. One example of my clinical forensic work includes a trip to Bolivia in 2011 with a team from Drexel CNHP. Since I am a forensic practitioner, my role was to work with psychologists, prosecutors and judges regarding enhanced assessment of children exposed to sexual violence. Below is a photo while working with children in the school room of the Domestic Violence Shelter/compound where they were residing (located at over 12 thousand feet in the Andes mountain range!). I got to meet quite a few alpacas during that time and fell in love with eating quinoa! Please help your peers and Dr. Grief learn more about each of you here in the Introductions Padlet. ONWARD YOU GO and Enjoy the course! - Dr. Clements

Hello class,
My name is Laurell Sample. I grew up in Philadelphia but live right outside of Philly in Montgomery county. I took one research class while completing my online BSN program. Research to me, is very challenging and scary lol. I have been out of school for a while, so getting back into writing with APA format will be a challenge. Also, I find it difficult sometimes to find good quality articles and hope this class can help me with that. Looking over the assignments due for this quarter has been slightly overwhelming, but I plan to take each assignment one at a time. I am married with two small children. I work as a MICU/SICU float nurse at Einstein and Abington. My favorite thing to do is travel and I wish everyone much success in their journey!

Hi everyone, my name is Angela Soorikian. I am from South Jersey, in a little town called Medford. It's about 40 minutes from Drexel University campus. It's been a while since I've taken a research class. I took one while obtaining my bachelors in nursing, about 5 years ago. I'm pretty nervous to jump back into it but also excited to learn more about research and brush up on my writing skills! I currently work as a registered nurse on a cardiac/neuro floor at Virtua hospital in Voorhees, NJ. I also do some per diem work in a psychiatric impatient hospital. I love my jobs but I also plan on expanding my career into hopefully teaching nursing students one day. I wish everyone much success in this class!

Hi Everyone!

I’m Megan O'Boyle. I’m originally from Raleigh, NC, but I currently live in Baltimore, MD and work at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the NICU. I worked in Raleigh for 3 years, then became a travel nurse for 2 years- I traveled all over, from Las Vegas, to Colorado, to Boston, and eventually to Baltimore about 2 years ago. I ended up settling and taking a full time job, and met my boyfriend who is stationed here in the Navy. He is originally from Minnesota…as you can see in my picture, we are a “house divided” when it comes to football! We are planning to be here for another 6 months, but then will be moving again (somewhere!)- I’m excited to start a new journey in a new location, and thankful to be an online student so I can do school anywhere!

I took a research class previously while studying for my BSN, but that was a while ago, so I am somewhat nervous about jumping back into it- I’m hoping that I will have retained some knowledge! Professional nursing research studies seem extremely intricate and detailed, so what I’m hoping to learn in this class is how to proceed in understanding how to collect large amounts of information, how to organize it, and eventually use it to complete effective and beneficial research that has a positive outcome for patients.

I’m looking forward to working with all of you, and to a wonderful semester!

My name is Charis (pronounced Karis) Klein. I'm from Northern Michigan in a tiny town called Central Lake. I currently live in the suburbs of Charlotte, NC. I have recently taken a job in the ICU as a weekender as I am in the AGACNP program. I am also a hospice nurse. Hospice and Palliative care are my passion. When I complete my advanced practice degree it is my hope that I will have the opportunity to practice in the field of hospice and palliative care.
I have 2 daughters, Keely (14 years old), and Jackie (9 years old). My husband of 15 years owns a local bar. We live less than 3 miles from our places of work and ride our bikes quite often in the nice weather. Our suburb of charlotte is very bike and pedestrian friendly. I especially love the spring and summer when I'm able to ride to and from work. In my free time I enjoy beach trips with my family or hiking out west. We recently explored the Absaroka Bear Tooth Wilderness in Montana. I enjoy yoga and running year round. We have 2 dogs a shitzu mix (Munson) and an american pit bull terrier mix (Yogi). Both are rescues with the little shitzu ruling the roost.
My only experience with nursing research was while obtaining my BSN. I am both anxious and eager to delve into the subject in depth. Writing is not my forte, so this course is a bit intimidating. However, I firmly believe that if it doesn't scare you a bit, you aren't growing. I hope to gain a better understanding of research and its application to advanced practice nursing. Best practice is based upon research and must be a priority. I wish everyone a successful quarter!

Hello, Everyone ! My name is Janelle Rebustes and I am a Jersey Girl born and raised. I am from a little town in North Jersey but my parents are originally from the Philippines. I have taken a research class in my undergraduate at Rutgers but have not done anything similar other than review articles and case studies as part of my development on the clinical ladder. I am perhaps a bit worried about interpreting information and coherently expressing my understanding. I am excited to learn and be better for it ! I am a Neuroscience Nurse and love the challenges that come with it - it is truly humbling. I love pursuing all that God has before us where some of my hobbies include hiking, crossfit, travel, yoga, and dance. This past year was my first year doing Spartan Races where I was able to complete 6 - my goal this year is to complete at least 9! And what you learn as you train and race is no matter the obstacle, you will go through it with integrity and true grit. You savor what's important much like my Grandma who is 99 years young does ! This online experience is still intimidating to me at times but I am thankful for the opportunity to be here. Cheers to a great quarter to come !

Hi everyone! I am Hannah Seitz! It is nice to meet you all and I look forward to a fun, knowledgeable quarter!

I currently live in Philadelphia. I work in the suburbs at Bryn Mawr Hospital. Although I love the city lifestyle, I was born and raised in York County, PA. I have an appreciation for both a busy atmosphere, as well as small town living!

I completed a research course during my undergraduate studies. I attended West Chester University to obtain my BSN. The research course provided was insightful and gave me a great foundation for nursing research. Nonetheless, my biggest concern (and struggle with research) is identifying valid research studies/articles to utilize when writing papers or applying to my practice as a nurse. My goal is to become more comfortable reviewing research in order to effectively and appropriately implement research recommendations into my practice as a future nurse practitioner.

In my personal time, I enjoy reading mystery books, cooking, travelling to the beach (Rehoboth Beach, DE), and supporting all local Philadelphia sports teams (go Birds!!!). Most importantly, I enjoy spending my time off with my family, boyfriend, and friends. I have attached a recent picture with my family celebrating my sister’s first day at her new job as a nurse practitioner. I look up to her in many ways, and she largely impacted my motivation to go back to school for my master’s degree. Finally, I will tell you a little about my favorite trip thus far. In nursing school, I had the opportunity to travel to South Africa with a group of nursing students and professors. We were able to volunteer our time at orphanages and a maternity hospital. Although hesitant at first, the month long trip provided me great personal and educational opportunities.

Good evening everyone, My Name is Wade Evans and this will be my second quarter in the (Adult-Gerontology) Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program. I took a research course as an undergraduate nurse at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). I still live close to that school, outside of Indiana, Pennsylvania. Time management will always be a concern for me when starting up on another quarter. Previous professors have always stressed the importance of quantitative research, so I am interested to see the perspective of Dr. G on qualitative research. I recently left working in the cardiac cath lab, and am back working at the bedside in a cardiovascular post-operative ICU. I wish us all a great start to 2019 and this winter quarter.

I am currently an Administrative Director of Emergency Services as well as the President of the American Board of Nursing Specialties. In my spare time I enjoy running, cycling, and taking trips in our RV to find cooler temperatures. I am originally from Canada and truly miss the seasons. I have three Tibetan Mastiffs--the smallest weighing 130 lbs and the other two are 165 lbs. I love nursing research. Many of my professors in Canada were pioneers in nursing research and encouraged a need for asking "why"? Fun facts--I have lived in Auckland, New Zealand and had a life-changing trip to the Sultanate of Oman where I saw outpost hospitals treating patients with tetanus. Here's a picture of my three "TMs" (Mr. Biggles, Lulu, and Gurkha)

I work as a Clinical Nurse Expert in the Emergency Department at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. I am enrolled in the dual-pediatric NP program and this is my second semester. I took a few research courses with my first bachelors, a biology degree, and a few with my nursing degree. I enjoy the research process and would love to one day reach the level of publishing. In this class I hope learn more about the type of researh NP's are coming out with and how I can use the NP role in research. ...I'm a reader, a movie buff and enjoy a good IPA. Currently working two jobs so when I find a bit of spare time I spend it with my husband and rescue pup, Luna. Good luck in class everyone! (That's me on the right)

Hi everyone! My name is Carolyn Cook, and I work on the Hematology/Oncology/BMT unit at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. I live in Pittsburgh, PA, with my husband David and our three cats (Troy, Bella, and Luna) and our German Shepherd dog (Apollo).
I took one research class in undergrad, I do not remember much about it so I am excited to see what we will be covering in this quarter! I hope to become more comfortable with research methods and techniques over the course of this next 10 weeks.
My interests include reading, cooking, and traveling. My favorite place in the world is Hope Town, Bahamas. My husband and I got married there and try to go back as often as we can! I have uploaded one of my favorite pictures of the island!
I look forward to getting to know everyone better throughout this quarter!

Hello, My name is Ashleah Martinez. I work in the Cardiac ICU at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, I have worked here since I graduated nursing school in 2009 from Catholic University. I am excited to start the Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program at Drexel. I’ve grown to love the pediatric population I work with and hope to serve them in a different way once I graduate NP school. I live in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, a small suburb of Pittsburgh. I have three children Noah (7), Emilia (4), and Lucia (18months). I also have two Labrador Retrievers (Sadie and Sam) who I consider my Children as well :-). My days off of work are busy, hectic, and filled with lots of family time. I would not have it any other way. I love to get outdoors with the kiddos as much as possible to let them run around and explore. This is my first research course. I am very excited to learn something new, I have not been exposed to much research before, so I hope this course will help me better understand it. I am mostly nervous about writing, it is not a strong point for me. I look forward to getting to know all of you guys and starting this new adventure!Ashleah

My name is Stephanie Beers and I am enrolled in the Adult Primary Care/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner tract. I live in the very picturesque Hunterdon County New Jersey where we have a little bit of everything,, farms, horses, and miles of hiking and biking trails, but not to far from everyday civilization. I have a been a nurse for approximately 20 years and have spent the entirety of my career in oncology. I could not imagine taking care of any other patient population. I currently work at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey working as a nursing clinician in the Melanoma Soft Tissue Program. However, this is my second job. My first job is being a mother to my four beautiful children. my oldest is 15, twin 10 year olds with my youngest just turning eight. I also have a 9 month old weimeraner puppy and of course a loving husband of twenty years.
I am a little nervous taking a research course, but excited at the same time. Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey is an outpatient academic medical center very supportive of nursing research and education. I am hoping through this course I am better able to contribute to the rich portfolio of nursing research that has originated out of our nursing division.
