Reflection of COIL Project

From my international peers Ice-Breakers i could tell poverty is on the rise and that if we don't do something soon it will spin out of control. But it's easier said than done after all fixing any problem requires money. In which not everyone is willing to lend since it's hard to come by.

Ending poverty would require a global effort to see that this shouldnt be a problem.

My international peers have interesting lifestyles as well as a vibrant upbringing. Reason i say this is because they are proud of where they are from. They are culturally fulfilled which is something I cannot understand, but I'm happy they are educated and proud of who they are.

I'm not going to say this assignment has made me a better person after all. We all know how to end homelessness and poverty, a trillion dollars minimum. But I don't have that nor you, now I know what you're thinking “I don't have to get that much”, or “ you don't need to contribute that much”, and you're right I don't, it's absurd to say every little thing counts. I wont say i have become a better or worse citizen, i just learned that homelessness is a problem that we could only hope to eradicate.

I don't think I changed in any shape or form but if there is anything that should change is the way we spend money. Homelessness is not going away anytime soon, so we might as well invest in entrepreneurs to start more businesses that hire more people. My mindset hasn’t changed since I started this project but I would like to look back at this experience and be grateful I'm not on the streets myself.

This project has allowed myself and my peers to be more aware of the state the world is undergoing. Poverty is everywhere and being born and raised in one location it is very hard to know what other countries are really doing with the media covering and manipulating the news. But besides that, it's clear how poverty is affecting the economy and making it even harder for the people who are struggling. The concern of the international presentation is showcasing how it gets worse and worse and to me it looks like the people who are already poor cannot go back to a normal state of living and onto the next generation. At the same time all natural resources like food and medicines, which are high priority in a lot of cases just like in the US. Understanding more about the economic state of the world has made me realize how it keeps getting worse and barely any change but at the same time it has brought me more awareness of this issue. There's diffidently things out in the world where we can make a small change and how it can make a difference. Which is why i will learn more about this and soon start making change and it can even be just volunteering or donating to a good cause. Thank you for this wonderful project as i will also talk more about it with my friends and peers and hopefully get inspired to make a change.

The objective of ending poverty is important and ambitious, requiring creative thinking, teamwork, and a strong feeling of social and personal responsibility. Not only is the elimination of poverty morally required, but it is also a critical first step in building a society that is more fair, just, and sustainable. The intricate challenges that poverty presents to both individuals and groups invariably provoke contemplation of one's own values, the institutions of society, and the fundamental interdependence of human well-being. The goal of eradicating poverty has the potential to have a significant impact on a person's feeling of social and personal responsibility. It compelled me to consider their roles in resolving systemic injustices, pushing for change, and cultivating an environment that values empathy, solidarity, and empowerment.

My conception of reducing poverty is greatly influenced by my interactions with peers around the world. I had the opportunity to interact with peers from various cultures, which exposed me to a wide range of viewpoints, experiences, and anti-poverty strategies. Furthermore, engaging with peers from India offers the chance to exchange expertise and work together on creative solutions and tactics to eradicate poverty. I learned about effective policies, programs, and initiatives that have reduced poverty in many situations by collaborating and conversing with my peers and peers from India. New methods and solutions can be modified and applied in one's own community or nation and can be sparked by this intellectual interaction. Interacting with peers from India helped me develop empathy, solidarity, and a feeling of global responsibility. Most are more likely to feel compelled and committed to tackling poverty on a global scale if they are made aware of the difficulties that people in different regions of the world experience and the interconnectedness of poverty.

The southern Indian state of Kerala is home to the culturally, historically, and traditionally rich city of Thrissur. I was able to engage with the local community and because of that I had the chance to see the significant insights into the distinctive cultural customs, identity, and way of life of Thrissur. One of Kerala's biggest and most impressive temple festivals, the Thrissur Pooram festival, is one of the city's well-known arts and cultural events that anyone may learn about. Many can learn more about the practices, convictions, and ideals that define the Thrissur community by taking part in local celebrations, events, and rituals. Investigating Thrissur's language, food, and architecture can provide insightful information on the way of life and history of the area. The Vadakkunnathan Temple, one of the city's iconic examples of traditional Kerala architecture, is only one example of the city's unique architectural style. A flavor of the region's culinary traditions can be obtained by sampling local fare, such as the delectable Kerala sadya (traditional feast) or the well-liked biryani made in the Thrissur manner. Furthermore, speaking Malayalam with the locals helps foster a stronger sense of community and increase tourists' understanding of the region's linguistic variety. Beyond the obvious facets of culture and way of life, getting to know Thrissur's residents can provide insight into the principles, customs, and feeling of community that characterize their city. I learned about the value of social peace, spirituality, and family in Thrissurian culture by having discussions with the people. It is possible to see how deeply ingrained Thrissur's spirit of friendliness and community is by simply observing daily life in the city's marketplaces, residential areas, and public areas. I got a better understanding of the depth and variety of this dynamic city in Kerala by immersing myself in the culture, and identity of India.

Connecting with my international peers and coworkers can be a life-changing event that contributes to the development of more globally aware individuals. Engaging with folks from diverse cultural origins exposes them to a range of viewpoints, attitudes, and lifestyles. This exposure develops empathy, open-mindedness, and cultural awareness qualities that are crucial for surviving in today's globalized society. A more sophisticated and inclusive worldview can result from meaningful encounters that helped me grasp the intricacies and interconnectivity of global challenges on a deeper level. Working together with peers from India provided additional chances for global learning, development, and collaboration. Collaborating with my peers from many facilitates the exchange of knowledge, skills, and optimal methodologies, resulting in inventive resolutions and strategies for intricate problems. I felt as if I increased my skill sets, widened my perspectives, and acquired a more comprehensive grasp of global challenges by drawing on the pooled knowledge and experiences of a varied group of peers. This cooperative approach not only promotes mutual respect and understanding but also helps to transcend cultural divides and advance personal development. Interacting with colleagues and peers from around the world motivated me to take initiative and have a good influence both inside and outside of my community. A sense of shared accountability for tackling global issues like poverty, inequality, climate change, and social injustice may be developed among individuals such as myself via dialogues, teamwork, and shared experiences. This increased consciousness and feeling of togetherness has inspired me to take part in campaigns, activism, and other projects that advance good change on a global level. Through leveraging the potential of cooperation and unity, I and many more people out there can strive to establish a more fair, just, and sustainable society that benefits everybody.

This was an amazing experience to chat and see the different point of view from someone across the globe. Talking and texting with my peers was also fun to see what they thought about everything and just to see how close they are to their long-term goal. I met wonderful people along the way. To sum up, the fight to end poverty is a shared obligation that calls for cooperation, empathy, and group effort. Collaborating with peers and colleagues from throughout the world can deepen our grasp of the complexity of poverty, spark creative thinking, and promote a feeling of global citizenship. Through active communication, collaboration, and reciprocal assistance with people from other backgrounds, we can leverage our combined abilities, assets, and knowledge to tackle the underlying causes of poverty and establish a more just and inclusive society for everybody. We can create a culture of empowerment, empathy, and solidarity thanks to meaningful encounters and partnerships, which will lead us to a day when poverty will no longer be a barrier to human dignity and well-being. When we work together, we can create a world that is more equitable and affluent for both the present and the future generations.

Engaging in this project has significantly heightened my awareness alongside my peers regarding the global state of affairs. It's been eye-opening to recognize the pervasive presence of poverty worldwide. Growing up in one region, it's often challenging to grasp the reality of other countries, especially with media narratives that can distort or manipulate the truth. However, it's become increasingly evident how poverty intersects with and impacts economies, exacerbating the challenges for those already struggling.

The international perspective presented in this project vividly illustrates the escalating severity of poverty. It appears that once individuals and communities fall into poverty, breaking free from its grip becomes exceedingly difficult, potentially extending its effects across generations. Moreover, essential resources like food and medicine, crucial for survival and well-being, remain scarce in many parts of the world, mirroring concerns even in affluent nations like the US.

Delving deeper into the economic intricacies of global poverty has underscored the stagnant nature of progress and the urgent need for change. Yet, amidst the grim realities, there's a glimmer of hope in realizing that even small actions can yield significant impact. This realization compels me to delve further into this issue, seeking avenues where I can contribute, whether through volunteer work or supporting meaningful causes through donations.

I express my heartfelt gratitude for this enriching project experience. It has not only broadened my understanding but also ignited a desire for action. I'm eager to share these insights with my friends and peers, hoping to inspire collective efforts towards effecting positive change.

This coil project experience although a bit tricky due to online communication was a fun idea. It is very cool how although we come from different places and cultures and backgrounds we can all come together to acknowledge the crisis that is poverty. This experience has opened my eyes to just how bad the global poverty situation is and how it's affecting more than just a portion of the world. It has also shown me that we must not be quick to judge others and be more compassionate and understanding. It has also shown me how privileged I am to not have to worry about where I'll get my next meal or where I'll be spending the night. How fortunate I am in general to be presented with the opportunities that I have had and the chance to further my education. Poverty can be measured differently across the globe as well.

Interactions with international peers can help people understand the United Nations (UN) Goal 1, "No Poverty," which aims to end poverty in all by recognizing that poverty is complex and affects people differently in different regions. It includes strategies to promote social protection systems, decent employment, and the resilience of the poor. Poverty is defined as more than just the lack of income and productive resources. It can also include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion, and lack of participation in decision-making. The UN has set the international poverty line at two dollars and fifteen cents per day. Individuals are considered to live in extreme poverty if their daily income or consumption is below this line. Some things that can be done to address poverty include active engagement in policymaking, creating an enabling environment for productive employment, promoting economic opportunities for the poor, investing in education, targeting the most vulnerable, increasing basic resources and services, and supporting communities affected by conflict and climate-related disasters.

Eventually, I can start appreciating and embracing my international peers who are different from me. One of the core obstacles I am likely to face when communicating with peers from other cultures has to be a language barrier. It’s important to learn the core words and phrases of that culture to ease communication. Culture influences how anyone views the world from different perspectives, as well as different professional and personal experiences of an international culture, which can provide varying viewpoints that inspire society to view the world, especially their community. Besides driving innovation, diversity of ideas breeds creativity, facilitating problem-solving and meeting people's needs in different ways. Creating a diverse yet inclusive environment can help communities generate new ideas. Peers who understand the impact of the diverse cultures, experiences, and perspectives of the community will be more respectful of one another. An all-inclusive multicultural environment is a great way to connect with people and the community. Being culturally aware helps me acknowledge my heritage and worldview. By understanding the differences in other people’s beliefs and customs. The more you learn about different cultures is one of the best ways to realize the connection between cultural awareness and self-awareness. Understanding other cultures helps me understand the diversity in human creation. It’s important in dispelling miscommunication as well as misinterpretation of creating meaningful and valuable relationships with others, I learn to respect and appreciate their differences. In a highly interconnected world, most likely to encounter people from diverse cultures everywhere.

It made me realize how we all need to work together to help those in need because sadly, there are people in need everywhere. Furthermore, engaging with my international peers provided me with valuable insights into their cultures and lifestyles. By learning about their traditions and values, I developed a greater respect for poverty and empathy towards different perspectives. This project has helped me gain mutual understanding and appreciation for my international peers and, really, for everyone. Reflecting on this experience, I recognize how it has shaped me into a better empathetic person. It has helped me with my awareness of global issues, encouraged me to embrace my life and be more grateful, and inspired me to advocate for positive change on both local and global sides. By interacting with my peers from different backgrounds, I have learned the importance of empathy and collaboration in addressing these difficult topics and situations people have to go through. Moreover, this experience has strengthened my sense of personal and social responsibility. I feel as most of us need to take accountability towards contributing to poverty and advocating for social justice. I am hoping I can use my knowledge and resources to support people as much as I can, even if it's just as small as helping a homeless person with some food or money. Overall, my interactions with international peers have deepened my understanding of poverty.

How did your interactions with your international peers impact your understanding of United Nation Goal 1 – Ending Poverty?

The united nations sustainable development goals include, in their first goal ending poverty. The familiarity with poverty within differing societies allows for governments and independent organizations to seek similar resolutions to the issue. As interacting with international peers, it can be seen the likeness in methods used to combat the issue and in addition the iterations of how governments alleviate poverty. For instance, in the united states for distribution of food to the needy there is an implementation of supplemental nutrition assistance program which gives credit to those in need to redeem for food likewise the national food security act in india does the same. Hence, with interacting with international peers it can be concluded that to further take action against poverty the solutions provided are similar throughout differing societies.

What did you learn about the culture, identity and/or lifestyle of your international peers?

The culture, identery and lifestyle of my international peers is much alike of my own.

Reflect on how this experience has helped you to become a better global citizen.

This experience has affected my sense of global responsibility as it has enabled me to see the continuing issues presented in a larger scale. With a focus on the larger scale of the issue we can take into consideration how we can reuse methods that have been effective in differing locations with the same issues. The experience allows me to have a stronger sense of the global impact of the issue rather than just my surrounding enviourment.

How has this experience affected your sense of personal and social responsibility?

In this experience my sense of personal and social responsibility has grown stronger. With the repetitiveness of the issues and the combative methods used against them being alike regardless of the surrounding environment there is a greater need to take action. Since the introduction of the topic both locally and internationally, the information and data to how common this issue is it has allowed me to be more personally and socially responsible by being informed on the scale of the issue. Alongside i am now paired with the methods to combat the issue preparing me to aid by giving foundational knowledge of the problem whilst in alignment with the solutions presented by organizations, governments, and the united nations development goals .

Not everyone experiences the same advantages as us, therefore if we share and give to others, we can assist those who are in need.In order to take care of their health and be able to stay healthy, they should also be given extra benefits like healthcare.

Some things I learned about my international peers is that Thissur has divine landmarks. They are also known for their body art called pulikali that is shown during their festivals of onam and Thrissur pooram where they decorate elephants and march through their city to the Vadakkunnathan Temple.

As a result of this experience, I've grown as a global citizen. It helped in my understanding of the struggles people encounter all throughout the world and in teaching me to be thankful for what I have rather than take things for granted. By teaching me to not waste food etc and to be grateful for the simple things in life, this experience has improved my sense of societal and personal responsibility. On a personal level, this project has made me more aware of the challenges faced by those living in these situations. It gives me the desire to take action and make a positive change in the world. On a social level, I feel the need to encourage others to take action as well with me. For example, encouraging others to volunteer in a local food bank,

Overall, this project has helped me have a better understanding of poverty and has helped me see that there are not many resources out there to help some individuals get the services they need which affect their lives more. We need to stick together and help those in need in order to make a change in this world.

This project has been a one of a kind project for me in my opinion it made me understand the serious issue of poverty and how its a global crisis. To add on ,collaborating with international colleagues on United Nations Goal 1 (Ending Poverty) has widen my perspective on how poverty impacts everyone globally. Working with diverse cultural and social backgrounded people has also provided me with varied insights into the complex and multifaceted nature of poverty across the world which was honestly a very good experience.

From this project , I discovered that poverty is more than just an economic issue; it is also firmly embedded in politically, social, and cultural circumstances. Poverty exists for a variety of causes across the world, and it manifests itself differently in various countries. My experiences with foreign classmates gave me various insights on the difficulties that other communities face and the strategies they use to overcome them. The project demonstrated the interconnectivity of all nations and the significance of working together, like United Nations Goal 1, towards achieving long-term solutions. Interacting with my foreign friends has helped me comprehend and respect different cultures, identities, and ways of life, as well as gain insight into our shared humanity.

This project has given me a greater sense of personal and social responsibility. I acknowledge the luxury and responsibility that come with being a global citizen living in a strong and prosperous country. I believe in making use of my honor, wisdom, and skills for good in the world.
