Imagine a cash register with 10 times the amount of pennies as quarters in the cash register. They've been practically useless since the Coinage Act of 1864. People throw them away in fountains and leave them in jars. Although some argue that eliminating the penny would lead to inflation and rounding issues, others have been debating whether the penny is actually worth all it seems. Controversy lies in whether the penny should be eliminated or kept.

First of all, creating pennies are a waste of time. According to Source 1, titled, Penny Wise, or 2.4 Cents Foolish?," author Jeff Sommer argues that "The Canadian Government... plans to stop minting them and distributing them through the bank." This means that Canada agrees with the U.S. and have already started taking action to stop using the penny.

Furthermore, the penny costs more to make than it's actually worth. According to, "The Ever-Changing Penny," author Maria Story states that, "... the penny still costs the U.S. just over 1.8 cents to produce." This explains why it isn't worth it to mint and manufacture pennies anymore. Additionally, in the article titled, "Penny Wise, or 2.4 Cents Foolish?," Jeff Sommer adds, "Taxpayers lost $60.2 billion on the production and distribution of pennies in the 2011 fiscal year." What this tells us is that the amount of money lost adds up and can cost us a lot more in the future.
