According to : https://www.mencap.org.uk/about-learning-disability/about-learning-disability/facts-about-learning-disability , they state that most people with a learning disability are treated as ‘different&#39;. They
do not have the same control over their own lives as the rest of our society
and face challenges and prejudice every day.

 Less
     than 1 in 5 people with a learning disability work (compared with 1
     in 2 disabled people generally), but we know that at least 65% of people
     with a learning disability want to work. Of those people with a learning
     disability that do work, most only work part time and are low paid.

 Just 1
     in 3 people with a learning disability take part in some form of education
     or training.
 Children with a learning disability
     are often socially excluded and 8 out of 10 children with a learning
     disability are bullied.
 At least half of all adults with a
     learning disability live in the family home - meaning that many don&#39;t get
     the same chances as other people to gain independence, learn key skills
     and make choices about their own lives.

         <title>When Mencap conducted a further research, they found that in 2000, 9 out of 10people with a learning disability had experienced bullying and abuse, withalmost half of people suffering verbal abuse and almost a quarter beingphysically assaulted. The vast majority of these instances of abuse werehappening in a public place, and as a society, we were looking the other way.&amp;nbsp;

In 2003 the Criminal Justice Act introduced disability hate crime into
law. For the first time it was recognized that some people were committing
crimes against disabled people due to prejudice and hostility, and that crimes
such as this should receive harsher sentences.

However this did not stop these crimes from happening, and in 2007 the
tragic deaths of Francecca Hardwick, who had a learning disability, and her
mother Fiona Pilkington hit the headlines.&amp;nbsp;

After seven years of repeated harassment and abuse from neighbours, and
complete inaction from the police and others who they called on for help, Fiona
decided that ending her own life and that of her daughter was the only way to
stop the torment.

In 2011 Mencap launched the Stand By Me campaign to end disability hate
crime, accompanied by a&amp;nbsp;report&amp;nbsp;which found that many police services
across the UK had no hate crime structures in place and that victims felt
ignored by the police.

We called on police forces to take the police promise – a charter of 10
things they would do to improve how they tackled disability hate crime and
served people with a learning disability.

We later called on elected Police and Crime Commissioners to pledge their
personal commitment to working with us to end disability hate crime. While
there is still a very long way to go before we have stamped out disability hate
crime, figures of recorded crimes show that police forces are getting a better
grip on the problem and results from the Crime Survey of England and Wales show
that the number of disability hate incidents has fallen considerably since
2007.

A survey for Mencap found
health professionals had witnessed discrimination by their colleagues, with
patients suffering a lack of respect and dignity.

&amp;nbsp;

Overall 46% of doctors and 37%
of nurses said they believed people with learning disabilities received poorer
NHS care than other groups.

&amp;nbsp;

Almost half of doctors (45%) and a third of nurses (33%) personally
witnessed a patient being neglected or suffering a lack of dignity on the NHS,
or receiving poor quality care.

Some 39% of doctors and 34% of nurses, from the poll of 1,084, said they
thought patients suffered discrimination.
