By David Shannon
P 2002
The Blue Sky Press
Ages 4-8
Children who enjoy laughing and elaborate illustrations would enjoy this book.
Genre: Picture Book
Review: In this book, David keeps getting in trouble at his house. In the story, he keeps saying "it was not his fault, it was an accident, or dad says it". At the end, he realizes his mom is teaching him to behave correctly and take responsibility for his actions. He learns to love his mom and say sorry. I enjoy this book because it is super fun but at the same time realistic about how kids behave.

Teaching Point: Teaching the students that when they get in trouble in the classroom; it is to help them, not just to punish them. At the end, they will be able to understand and take responsibilities for their own actions and be READY TO LEARN in the classroom.

First Day
By Joan Rankin
P 2002
Age 4-7 years old
Children who are nervous would like this book because it would make the understand that first things can be scary but it will all be okay.
Margaret K. McElderry
Genre: Picture Book
Review: Haybaybillybun did not want to go to school when his mom woke him up. He started to make excuses that his feet were too slippery, his ears too fuzzy, and his eyes were scary. He asks his mom to go to school for him, but she says everything about him is lovely and nothing is wrong with him. They get in the car and then he realizes his name is too long and wants to be called bun. When he is introduced to the class, he realizes EVERYONE of his classmates has a long name. His mom heads home and then thinks "Bun" is too young to be at school. She rushes to the school to check on him, but sees he is perfectly fine and has made some new friends! I like this book because it shows that individuality should be something a child should be proud of and that learning can be fun!
Teaching Point: This book can teach children how to use the character voices. The children can really get involved and hear the story. This can also enhance their imagination and connect with the text by focusing on character voices.

The Turnip
By Jan Brett
P 2015
G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers
3-5 years old
Children who like reading books that involve animals as the characters.
Genre: Picture Book
Review: Badger Girl is happy to find the biggest turnip ever. It is growing in her vegetable garden. Once it is time to be harvested, the turnip is so big that she can not pull it up except with her family and friends help. I like this because while using vocabulary that the children can most likely read, it also instills the lesson that sometimes we need help and support from others in order to accomplish a difficult task.
Teaching Point: This book involves a lot of sight words for children in Kindergarten. It would be a great resource book for the children to read in private and partner reading time. They could also be able to identify their sight words of "my, I, am, she, he, in, it, the, got, to, but, etc".

Nini Lost and Found
By Anita Lobel
P 2010
Knopf Books for Young Readers
Ages 3-7 years old
Children who like cats and enjoy a story with a happy ending.
Genre: Picture Book
Review: Nini, the cat, saw an opportunity to go outside and she took it. Once outside, she thought twice about going back inside but thought she liked being outside a little more than being inside. After going far away from home and the darkness of night came, Nini became afraid of the noises and other scary animals. She wanted to go back home. In the darkness of the night, Nini heard her owners call her home. She followed the voice and made it safely back home to her cozy home. I like this book because her owner did not give up on calling her name and she ended up finding her way home.
Teaching Point: By showing the student this book, the teacher can show what happens when a student wanders too far away from home. Playing outside is fun, but the student always needs to make sure they are safe and can get back home when they need should. Being scared is never a fun thing and students can learn that through Nini's adventure of getting lost.

The Pigeon Needs a Bath!
By Mo Willems
P 2014
Ages 3- 6 years old
Children who enjoy a good laugh and need to learn about hygiene would like this book.
Disney Hyperion
Genre: Picture Book
Review: The pigeon needs a bath, but does not want to take a bath. He keeps making excuses that he took one last month, he feels clean, and that he does not smell anything. Finally, he decides to take a bath. At first, he makes excuses: it is too hot, too cold, not deep enough, too many toys, etc. Once he gets in the bath, he loves it. He ends up taking a ten-hour bath and does not want to get out. I like this book because it is funny and relatable for children.
Teaching Point: Often times, children are scared to try new things like taking a bath. This book can teach a child that trying new things can end up being fun and to give it a try before saying they do not want to.

Where the Wild Things Are
By Maurice Sendak
Caldecott Medal Winner
P1960
Harper & Row
Age 4-8 years old
Children who love activating their imagination and thinking of being someone different then who they really are like a king.
Genre: Picture Book
Review: This is a story about a little boy named Max who gets sent to bed without dinner because he put on his wolf suit and makes trouble. Then while Max is in his room, it turns into a forest and an ocean passes by that takes him to where the wild things are. Once Max arrives, he ends up taming the wild things and claiming to be their king. When Max sends the monsters to bed, he realizes he is lonely and wants to return where he knows someone loves him best, home. When he returns home there is a hot plate of supper waiting for him. I enjoy this book because it teaches a lesson while being creative.
Teaching Point: Focusing on where Max was and where he went can show the children different settings. By allowing the children to see this, they can then think by themselves of different settings, maybe even imagine a new setting. They could create their own setting.

Baby Polar Bears' Snow-Day
By Michael Teitelbaum
P 2008
Genre: Non-fiction Text
Review: What a fun way to teach about Polar Bears! This fun photo adventure book informs children about Polar Bears living in the Artic. It tells how they live in dens, cold weather, their babies are called cubs, they have blubber to stay warm, and can run fast through the snow. Polar bears also drink milk and eat fish and seal meat. At the end of the book, there are review questions to see what the children have learned from the lesson.
Teaching Point: The main goal of this book is to teach children about an animal that lives in a cold place of the world, Polar Bears. They can learn FUN facts about Polar Bears while looking at pictures of them in their natural habitat.

The monkey swings, the water buffalo charges, and the other animals do other things. At the end, the book shows a picture of all the animals mentioned. I like this book because it is an easy read for children and can help them identify words while learning about animals. It is also very colorful and eye grabbing.
Teaching Point: The teacher could use this book to teach about endangered animals. A lot of people know about her being a famous pilot but they do not know about her childhood. This book explains that she was an active and confident child and that is why she became a great aviator. I enjoy this book because it is cute and fun to see that Amelia Earhart was just like any other child but destined to be great.
Teaching Point: Teach the students what a nonfiction book means. This nonfiction picture book tells about their first year in America. Adapting to America required the Pilgrims and Native Americans living together in harmony. They signed a treaty and ended up helping each other grow and harvest food. At the end, they both ended up having enough food to help each other make it through. I enjoyed reading this book because it shows that when people work together, no matter if they are different, the task at hand can be accomplished.
Teaching Point: If Thanksgiving is coming up the teacher could use this book for a read aloud and teach the students why it is good to be thankful for warmth, food, and shelter. Her mother is embarrassed of her. She can barely stand up but spends her days taking care of her younger brother. During WWII, the children were to be sent away so Ada takes herself and her brother to the countryside. There she learns a whole new life with Susan. She can go outside, she learns how to ride a pony, and she can enjoy life not being trapped in an apartment. Her life is completely different now. I like this book because I love math!!!
Teaching Point: This book could be used when introducing negative numbers to students. There is a page with a number line on it that the teacher could use in order to say what happens when you subtract a bigger number by a smaller number you can get something lesson than one.

By April Pulley Sayre
P 2016
Boyds Mills Press
Age Range 8-12
Children who like science would enjoy this book.
Genre: Nonfiction Picture Book
Review: This SLOW book takes time to read and really process the information about things that are slow in nature, geology, outer-space, and more like slow-moving animals and slow-growing organisms, human processes such as breathing and sleep, the 2,000-year construction of the Great Wall of China, space exploration. In such a fast moving world, this book really teaches kids to slow down and take their time in reading in order to understand.
Teaching Point: When teaching the students about slow things this would be a great book to read. Also a comprehension lesson for taking your time reading to really understand what you read could be a tool this book would be used for.

In order to survive he has to get a job, act like a human, and fit in. What the Hippo really needs is a job just for him. He is a good worker, but needs something to fit him. I like this book because it is cute and can apply to real life about finding a job that you really do like and good at it. Hippo became what he was best at, being a Hippo.
Teaching Point: Teaching a community lesson to kindergartners and using this book would be great. This book shows a bunch of different jobs and can allow children to think about all the jobs in their community.

By Cynthia Lord
P 2006
Scholastic, Inc.
8-12 Years Old
Children who are the same age as this character and have to take care of their little sibling or a child who likes to read about friendship or is learning about a disabilities would like reading this book.
Genre: 4th-6th Grade Chapter Book
Review: The main character in this story is a 12 year old girl, Catherine. Catherine has to babysit her brother on summer vacation. David is autistic. Each chapter David learns a knew rule from his sister. His sister is eager to meet his new next door neighbor. This book is about friendship and Catherine discovering who her real friend by the way they treat her brother and other people who have disabilities. In the end, Catherine realizes Jason was her true friend. I like this book because it is a sweet story about a girl who discovers to accept her brother and find out who her real friends are.
Teaching Point: This book can be used to teach students that disabilities do not make a certain person incapable. They are just different. It could be used to teach students to accept others how they are and help them, just like Catherine did, to accomplish tasks.

By Cornelia Funke
p 2005
Yearling
Children who enjoy monsters and a good story about friendship would enjoy reading this book.
Genre: Early Chapter Book
Review: Ruffleclaw is a red furry monster that Tommy finds in his bed. Tommy is at first scared but then creates a special bond with Ruffleclaw. When Ruffleclaw leaves, Tommy ends up missing him. Tommy convinces Ruffleclaw to come back and he ends up finally being able to live with humans. This book is cute because it shows that friendship can exist in many forms with different people or in this case creatures.
Teaching Point: This 112 page book could be used in a lesson involving prediction. The students could think about what they think is going to happen next at each main event in the story like when the monster is in his bed, when his the monster leaves, and many more examples.

He overhears D.W, his little sister, singing a catchy tune. The problem he has to face is taking her idea for his own. He has to decide if it is okay to use D.W's tune.
Teaching Point: Use this book to teach students about coming up with their own ideas and not taking others. Ben lost his mother. Rose is running away. She sends a note that says help me. Ben is searching for his father. The two separate stories are told from written words and Rose's is told from illustrations. When the storm comes Ben loses his hearing. The two of their stories collide. I love how the author demonstrated this book and used characters with impairments to pull on the heart strings of the reader.
Teaching Point: A teacher could use this book to teach students the difference between powerful words and powerful illustrations. This graphic novel incorporates both which is super cool and a great tool to be used to show students that words and pictures work together to help tell a story.
