George Catlin: At first the Souix felt Catlin's paintings would capture their souls within the canvas. After one brave man allowed Catlin to paint his self portrait, the other Native Americans felt save with being painted as well. This lead to the Souix's amazement with Catlin's work and believed him to be a witch doctor with spiritual healing abilities.
Henry Ossawa Tanner: Tanner's work changes after his trip to Palestine through his use of colors. In the painting he incorporates the Palestinian architecture and culture. He changes the idea of what an angel usually represented as from a figure with wings to a beam of bright light. Mary in the painting is depicted as an average modern woman making the viewer from they can see themselves standing before the spirit too.
