Whenever I read this, my heart dropped. They took innocent children and used them for target practice. It is sickening. Being taken away with force from their happy lives, to be pulled into forced labor and death without knowledge is horrible. This entire situation is enough to make someone mad and sad at the same time.

The Jews have heard so many bad things about the Germans. They were a little on edge until they actually came face to face with them. They acted so nice towards the Jews, little did they know, it was all an act. These fake personalities led to building trust and then ripping it away. This is what pulled the Jews in to accomplish what the main goal was. Terminate.

Although so much was already going on, the Jews had a mindset that allowed them to not shut down. They needed to do what they needed to do because the future could always be worse. They might think it is horrible at the moment so they prepare themselves for even worse. Being in a position to change your mindset like this is damaging. With me, my personality is what makes me unique along with others. The "strange-looking creatures" were Jewish people at one time. This is the first part of the comparison. The next part is, "Only yesterday, I would have dug my nails into this criminal's flesh. Had I changed that much? So fast? (57). This is really where Elie starts to realize how much he has changed. He states he would normally fight back for his dad but this time he watched like nothing. Although he felt this way about his actions, he did have an internal flame. He was so angry that this had happened but at the same time, it made him work harder. He would never forgive them. The story states, "But the third rope was still moving: the child, too light, was still breathing..." (83). Elie was forced to watch this child struggle between life and death. This changed almost everyone that day, they could not believe what they had witnessed. People began to question their beliefs yet again, "For God's sake, where is God?" (83). They began to actually believe he wasn't there. Letting that boy struggle for his life in pure misery for half an hour. It was enough to make the people think of only death. "That night, the soup tasted of corpses" (83). Normally the soup tasted amazing, bu this time was different. Everyone was devastated and upset about the days outcome.

"Muselman... he would write down his number: good for the crematorium" (87). All these men would have to go through yet another round of this to decide if they are still in good enough shape to keep going. If their number got written down, they got sent straight to the crematorium. This is horrible. They were treating like worthless animals with no emotions or human feelings.
Inside Elie's Brain

Everything happening around the prisoners, made them feel they were too little or good for nothing. An example of this is whenever Dr. Mengele is giving the examinations. "My head was spinning: you are too skinny... you are too weak... you are too skinny, you are good for the ovens..." (90). Elie started to run to prove he was in good shape. Meanwhile he was so scared of what was going to happen. He knew he wasn't as strong and well nourished as some of the others. He was a dedicated worker and that paid off for him. He lived in constant fear of being picked to go to the crematorium.

In this book, the threat was mostly being shot or being burnt in the crematorium. Of course, there were others but these were the 2 main ones. I still don't understand how such bravery can come from such a young man. In the story, it states, "If one of us stopped for a second, a quick shot eliminated the filthy dog" (103). This statement brings out how much impact has come upon Elie. He is no longer considering himself or the other Jews as human. The idea of dehumanization has gotten in his head so much that he thinks of himself as an animal. This quote disgusts me. The temperature was freezing midst in the middle of the snow. Elie had a wound on his foot and he still continued. His dad was the only motivation he had left.

Recap

Back to my statement for the chapter 6 annotation, I stated that Elie's father was his only motivation. This is proven whenever Elie thinks his father has passed away. The memoir includes, "Suddenly, the evidence overwhelmed me: there was no longer any reason to live, any reason to fight" (117). Elie is so close to death but he keeps pushing with all the strength he has. Later on the book states, "I threw myself on his body. He was cold. I slapped him. I rubbed his hands, crying" (117). This is his attempt to wake up his father. Everything is so bad around him that he knows he can't lose his father. He was been with him since the first day.

A Few Disturbing Moments

While on the train, the Jew's were being starved more than when they were at the camps. They had to resort to snow as their main source of water/food. "We lived on snow; it took the place of bread" (118). This is what they had, they made it work. Unfortunately, tons of people did die in these circumstances. The book also states, "... a worker took a piece of bread out of his bag and threw it into a wagon. There was a stampede. Dozens of starving men fought desperately over a few crumbs... The worker watched the spectacle with great interest" (118). I don't understand how people could be so oblivious and horrible towards others. The Germans that say the Jew's just watched as if nothing was happening. They acted normal. They made no effort to help, instead, they made things worse. These men were already in extremely bad conditions. Due to everyones starvation, huge battles started just over a tiny bit of bread. This scene disgusted me incredibly. Just reading about how the Germans acted in this situation is enough to make one sick.

This certain scene really makes me sad. An older man is just trying to fend for himself and his son. The story reads, "Meir, my little Meir! Don’t you recognize me... You’re killing your father... I have bread...for you too...for you too... He collapsed" (119). He was not only thinking about himself but his son as well. This man died and nobody seemed to care, including his own son. What really shakes me is this part, "His son searched him, took the crust of bread, and began to devour it" (119). Everyone grieves and in these circumstances, the son was doing the necessary to survive. Sadly, both the son and father had died that evening.

Faith

Faith plays a HUGE role in this book. Once one loses faith, it is all over. At this point in the story, it was rare to find trust in anyone. Meir Katz is someone that Shlomo talks to and got to know. He is starting to go downhill and he can feel himself slowly drifting towards death. He came to accept his fate. Shlomo goes on to tell Meir Katz "Don't give in! ... You must resist! Don't lose faith in yourself!" (120). He does this as an act of encouragement. He hopes he could rebuild some of Meir's faith so he can continue on. Grief of losing his son was just now hitting him. Meir was one of the strongest men still alive, if he gives up, what does that mean for the others? Elie and Shlomo are still continuing on due to having each other. They use each other as support systems and motivation.
