The genre

For this song, the genre was decided to be a soft ballad based around love and a death in a relationship. To achieve this the instruments played softly, and the guitar played broken chords for the majority of the song. In the end, this was played using the electric guitar, bass guitar, tambourine and vocals.

The development

This song developed mostly through the constant instrument changes; it was originally supposed to use a keyboard and acoustic guitar with a loop pedal. But, this first changed due to unforeseen circumstances where the keyboard and acoustic idea was dropped and an acoustic guitar would play. This changed again to use the bass guitar and electric guitar due to further issues throughout the session. Despite having to change around a lot and not having a lot of time, the composition of the song was still fairly good.

Another development was the interchanging of the vocals, where the vocalists would change and figure out which parts would be sung together and which parts would be individual. For instance, the final lyric is sung by only one vocalist for more of an effect.

The performance

To open the song, the guitar plays the chords as arpeggio notes for two bars. To start, only one vocalist is singing. The lyrics then come in with the bass playing legato notes of the chords. The verse builds up into the chorus, where the guitar strums a change of chords frequently. The bass guitar plays the notes more often in the chorus, and the tambourine plays the same beat as that of the bass. The verse then comes back in, with the guitar playing arpeggio of the verse chords again and the tambourine dropping back out. After another build up and repeat of the chorus, there is a bridge. In the bridge, the verse chords are played as a single strum on the guitar and legato on the bass. The vocals take turns in singing a round of the bridge lyrics which crescendo into a held note by one of the vocalists. This flows into the chorus and the tambourine coming back in, which is repeated twice. The outro has another change of lyrics and are played with a single strum of the guitar. In the outro, the bass guitar has dropped out so that the texture makes this section softer. The song ends with the final line being sung by only one vocalist for impact, and a single strum on the guitar which rings out.

Our peers said that they liked the vocals and the theme of the song. However to improve, we would have to work on the timing. I would have to agree, as we didn't have constant percussion so it was harder to stay in time. I think that the song could also be improved with adding in a keyboard and some more melodic instruments.

I think that one of my strengths was adjusting to the way the song was performed by the time I joined the group later on, as well as playing the tambourine at the same time as the bass guitar in different sections of the song. To improve my own role, I think my bass and the guitar could have worked together to build up the song a bit better in certain parts of the song.

To summarize, I think that our song worked well in response to the constant changing of instruments. A lot more could have been done to make it suit the ballad idea further, but otherwise I think it was successful- the lyrics being a main factor of this.
