She used some of the Washi tape on the front edge of the Chromebook, on the slot of the base where it goes in, and then wrapped around the charging cord. She also prints off their 'check in cards' with their QR code to Clever. She then buys key labels with plastic covers and split rings. These hang on hooks by the classroom door. Kids identify their 'key' by their special washi tape. Works like a charm!

I do refreshers as needed and ALWAYS after the winter holiday break. The main rules are printed and posted on the Chromebook cart and students add their finger print and initials to our Chromebook Constitution.

In my 8th grade Language & Literature classroom, each student is assigned their own laptop. One of the key technology norms we establish from day one is the expectation that devices must be brought to class fully charged each day. This is reinforced through daily reminders during dismissal and visual signs near the door that say, “Charge it before you park it!”

Students who consistently forget to charge their devices are assigned a tech accountability partner or given a checkout form to track their usage of the backup charging station. To maintain these norms, we revisit the expectations at the start of each grading period, and students help lead class discussions about why tech readiness matters. This process builds ownership and helps prevent class disruptions caused by uncharged devices.

I set clear expectations for Chromebook use in my classroom. Before students receive their devices, we review the procedures together. For example, I teach them to “shutter” their Chromebooks (close the lid to about 45°) when I am talking, and they must ask for permission before using headphones. I also model how to transition from direct instruction to accessing online assignments, and we practice it as a class.

They can also serve the role as a helper if someone has trouble with their device. However, this year I plan to implement troubleshooting videos where they can even view from a classroom device in hopes they can be a problem solver. Also, it's important for students to have their login info easily accessible and the teacher to also have an on-hand copy (without having to go look it up) just in case they forget.

This can be challenging especially for the younger grades because there is so much that needs to travel with them from class to class that adding that cart of devices to push around, (as simple as it might sound) could be challenging. My grade level is going to try having the iPads stored in our homerooms and using them instead as a community iPad to share amongst the students. They will have a QR code to scan when they need the iPad to use in class that will be able to log them into the iPad with their information.

They know how to open tabs when your not looking and they know how to get back on their assignment when you do look..... So now I trained myself to look at histories and to aggressively monitor better. It usually takes one person to get caught for some of them to know that you do not get off the platform you are suppose to be on! You have to be aware 100 percent what they are doing!!

Since I have many devices, I always set clear routines. Students know they must plug in the tablets when the timer rings and close all apps before rotating. I also have a “Tech Helper” student every day that helps classmates if there is a small problem like volume or login.

Sometimes we have connection issues, so I keep some phonics or writing activities ready just in case. I try to remind students to handle the tablets with care and keep them clean. Even if they are little, they learn fast and like to be responsable with technology.

To develop and maintain technology norms, start by involving students in creating clear, positive rules about device use, such as when to have screens visible or how to use earbuds respectfully. Post these norms visibly and review them regularly. Model expected behaviors and practice routines like logging in, device storage, and proper handling. Use consistent reminders and positive reinforcement to encourage adherence. Establish signals for when tech use should pause and foster student ownership by discussing why these norms matter for a focused learning environment.

A large visual rules panel guides the routine: 1) Help each other kindly 2) Scan your QR code 3) Open the app assigned for this center/time 4) Stay in that app until the timer ends 5) Close the app and return the iPad to charge. This keeps logins fast, gear organized, and norms clear.

I start by showing students exactly how I want devices handled, stored, and used, then we practice it together. I also let students help create our tech expectations so they feel more ownership. I keep visual reminders posted, use simple cues like “screens down,” and reteach when needed. Modeling matters too, because if I use tech responsibly, they’re more likely to follow my lead.

It provides tools for web filtering, classroom management, analytics, reports, and so much more. I use this in my classroom, especially when I am actively monitoring by displaying all my students' screens on my Promethean board. This allows me to check if students are on-task, especially when another student has my attention. This is a great classroom management tool that allows you to pause the internet to get student attention and filter websites to allow or block. There are many other features or incentives you can use to keep students on task.

-Stacey Conley 2025

Developing and maintaining technology norms starts with teaching expectations just like any other routine. I model how to use Chromebooks, when screens should be up or down, and how to handle headphones or materials. Visual cues—like noise-level trackers or timers—help students self-monitor while I’m working with small groups. Finally, I reinforce these norms by checking adaptive program data (minutes and lessons) and giving quick, consistent consequences or reminders when students get off task. Clear expectations + visual supports + consistent follow-through = strong tech norms.

Students are assigned a cubby and that cubby has a number on it which is what they use for their Chromebook. Students know they are responsible for that Chromebook and anything that happens to it while in their possession. When they return their Chromebooks they know which slot it goes in and they know to charge it with the corresponding charger.

Providing students with regular routines and norms is crucial for correct technology usage. Laying a strong foundation at the beginning of the school year is a great way to not drive yourself crazy by having to explain it all the time. Keeping things easily accessible like student headphones can also help control the learning environment. Let students know how to use their tech tools properly and what you expect from them. Lastly, it takes time and patience! You got this!

PreK teachers are really good at managing iPads in the classroom. Since many classrooms are 1-to-1 with devices, teachers have created simple systems that help students stay organized and independent. Many teachers use small standing bookshelves or charging stations where each student can easily find their iPad by looking for their picture taped to the back. Teachers also help students log in by placing QR codes with student pictures on the back of chairs or inside supply boxes. These systems help transitions go smoothly and make it easier for students to use technology independently.

At our Pre-K campus, equitable access to technology is supported through our 1:1 iPad. Every student has access to a district-issued iPad during the instructional day, ensuring that all learners can participate in digital learning experiences regardless of their background or access to technology outside of school. Teachers intentionally incorporate technology into lessons to support engagement, individualized learning, language development, and early literacy and math skills.

To ensure equitable access, devices are readily available in all classrooms and are maintained through regular monitoring and support from campus and district technology staff. Reliable wireless connectivity throughout the building allows students and teachers to access instructional applications and digital resources without interruption. The campus works closely with the district technology department to address connectivity issues promptly, maintain network performance, and ensure that all classrooms have consistent access to digital learning tools. These practices help create a learning environment where every student has the same opportunity to benefit from technology-enhanced instruction.
