One strategy that helps me is stating my technology rules at the very beginning bu also asking the students if they would like to add to the list of rules. We will practice what needs to be done and stay consistent with it. I make sure the rules are bein implemented so the students don't try and slip.

I saw a fantastic idea the other day for keeping track of computers, spots they go in, and cords that plug into THAT particular Chromebook. She used some of the Washi tape on the front edge of the Chromebook, on the slot of the base where it goes in, and then wrapped around the charging cord. She also prints off their 'check in cards' with their QR code to Clever. She then buys key labels with plastic covers and split rings. These hang on hooks by the classroom door. Kids identify their 'key' by their special washi tape. Works like a charm!

In my elementary classroom,

I rely heavily on every student using their assigned student number. Every student has an assigned number--by the alphabetical order of their last name. Their Chromebooks are numbered as are the slots in the charging cart. Student folders, book boxes, instructional tools--all numbered. Students keep their headphones in their book boxes on the back counter. The job helper--Chromebook Cart Concierge--checks the charging plugs/lights at the end of the day.

In my elementary classroom, we introduce all of the technology rules/norms at the beginning of the year with a slide presentation and videos with examples and non examples of how to use, put away, etc. We practice everything from getting our devices, carrying them, putting them away, never on the floor or near drinks, etc. We practice with examples and some silly non examples. I do refreshers as needed and ALWAYS after the winter holiday break. The main rules are printed and posted on the Chromebook cart and students add their finger print and initials to our Chromebook Constitution.

At the beginning of the year we set boundaries for our students on the technology they are able to use and what is not acceptable in our Culinary classroom. It took a lot of reminding this year to keep this consistent so next year we plan to add this a portion of their uniform grade so there is a more direct consequence to having phones our or earbuds in at inappropriate times.

In my 8th grade Language & Literature classroom, each student is assigned their own laptop. One of the key technology norms we establish from day one is the expectation that devices must be brought to class fully charged each day. This is reinforced through daily reminders during dismissal and visual signs near the door that say, “Charge it before you park it!”

Students who consistently forget to charge their devices are assigned a tech accountability partner or given a checkout form to track their usage of the backup charging station. To maintain these norms, we revisit the expectations at the start of each grading period, and students help lead class discussions about why tech readiness matters. This process builds ownership and helps prevent class disruptions caused by uncharged devices.

Chromebook Expectations

For example, I teach them to “shutter” their Chromebooks (close the lid to about 45°) when I am talking, and they must ask for permission before using headphones. In a PreK classroom, it is important to keep it simple. They are little kids, with little hands. Everything has to be easily accessible. I keep their headphones in a basket that is labeled with their name and QR code for ClassLink. Their iPads are labeled with their names and kept in an area that is easy for them to locate and access their iPad.

I use pictures to provide support for accessing their technology choices.

The technology station is a clearly defined space and students have access to cushions for sitting, lap desks if they choose, or plenty of space to lay or sit in any way that is comfortable to them that allows them to be engaged.

I have a charging cart in my classroom, I went through and labeled them 1-30. At the beginning of the year I give each student a number for the year. Everything in the classroom is labeled the same way. In the morning they grab their number and at the end of the day they put it back in the correct tray and plug it in. I have a student helper that is responsible to make sure all chromebooks are back and plugged in, if one is missing they let me know what number and I remind that student to put it on the charger

I have been using 1 to 1 iPad this year, but next year we are going to Chromebooks and only 12. With the iPads I wish I would have taken the time to teach the students to troubleshoot the problems they would come into. Another couple of students ensures we have all of our headphones returned and neatly stored. We also allow our fifth graders to carry their Chromebooks in "Chromebook bags". I have several students in charge of neatly storing them and cleaning them out at the end of each day. Students are allowed to get what they need at the beginning of the class day as they finish their breakfasts.

We have a class computer cart that hold laptops and the chargers. The cart stays plugged in. Students are suppose to plug in their assigned laptop when returning laptops to the cart. However, there have been times when it has come unplugged. Sometimes I don't realize right away. But when we get to the testing chunks of time- it's like they know that I need to buckle down and get things done. I wish that I would have thought to poll the students to determine their level of understanding when it came to technology. As a middle school teacher (coach now), I worked under the assumption that students knew more about using a laptop than they actually did. The first year we were given Chromebooks, I thought students would be familiar with that level of technology as well as the apps that we commonly use in the district. I learned quickly that students needed some additional lessons on the laptop and applications at the beginning of the year if they were going to be successful using that technology the rest of the year.

We have done both carts and one to one with Chromebooks at the middle school level. We have since gone back to the use of carts and only issue laptops to high school students. Using the carts has created some issues while using Windows based laptops since the memory quickly fills up with so many user profiles. Our district is moving to Chromebooks only next year so that all students are sure to have equal access to the technology that we are using each day.

I like having "class techs" that ensure all devices are charged at the end of the day. They can also serve the role as a helper if someone has trouble with their device. However, this year I plan to implement troubleshooting videos where they can even view from a classroom device in hopes they can be a problem solver. Also, it's important for students to have their login info easily accessible and the teacher to also have an on-hand copy (without having to go look it up) just in case they forget.

This school year I wasn't able to use the same set up as last year since I didn't have the cart to go with the devices. I used racks that were labeled with colored number dots that matched the same dot on their devices. The charging cords had the same colored velcro with the number to match the space where their device should go. I kept everything very well organized to make it easy for the kinder students to get it and put it away themselves. At the end of the day I had a helper to double check that all ipads were connected to the charger.

My school is departmentalized from K - 5th grade. This can be challenging especially for the younger grades because there is so much that needs to travel with them from class to class that adding that cart of devices to push around, (as simple as it might sound) could be challenging. My grade level is going to try having the iPads stored in our homerooms and using them instead as a community iPad to share amongst the students. They will have a QR code to scan when they need the iPad to use in class that will be able to log them into the iPad with their information.

Two years ago I had to learn a lesson the hard way. Students know how to be sneaky with devices. They know how to open tabs when your not looking and they know how to get back on their assignment when you do look..... So now I trained myself to look at histories and to aggressively monitor better. It usually takes one person to get caught for some of them to know that you do not get off the platform you are suppose to be on! You have to be aware 100 percent what they are doing!!

In my classroom we have a charging station for the Chromebooks. I color coded and numbered the Chromebooks, the slots where the Chromebooks go, and the chargers. Students are assigned a cubby and that cubby has a number on it which is what they use for their Chromebook.
