Grenade by Bruno Mars- Pop

"I'd catch a grenade for ya
Throw my hand on a blade for ya
I’d jump in front of a train for ya
You know I’d do anything for ya
…But you won't do the same"

In this song, the artist tells a story about a man would do anything for this girl, but she wouldn't do the same for him. This situation is very similar to Gatsby and Daisy. Gatsby is in love with Daisy and would die for her. He has always been in love with Daisy and has centered his whole life around getting her back. Gatsby even moved to West egg just so he could be near Daisy. He stares at the green light from Daisy’s house that is visible from his dock. "He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious was... I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward- and distinguished nothing except a single green light..." (Fitzgerald, pg 21). He hopes to one day rekindle his love with her. Once they meet again, Daisy realizes all of the things she could have had if she never left Gatsby. By looking at Gatsby’s success, shirts, money, etc... Daisy falls in love with him once again. Daisy, however, chooses Tom instead. He realized soon that she isn't who he thought she was and that she doesn't feel the same way. Daisy does not even show up to his funeral and stays with Tom for social reasons. Gatsby thought that by impressing her with his money she would want to be with him and leave Tom. Gatsby would have done absolutely anything for Daisy; however, Daisy just used him, and she knew it. This song relates to "Three O'Clock in the Morning" because in both songs, the lyrics tell about a man that wants nothing more than to keep his woman in his arms and never let go. It is unfortunate, however, that that Daisy has other intentions. This song would convey the desired mood because the audience could see how Gatsby feels about Daisy. It would achieve the mood of loneliness and emptiness.

That Should Be Me by Justin Bieber- Pop

"Does he love you the way I can?
Did you forget all the plans that you made with me?
'Cause baby I didn't
That should be me holding' your hand
That should be me making' you laugh
That should be me this is so sad
That should be me, that should be me
... I never should have let you go

As Gatsby stares out into the green light that he watches from his dock, he wonders what his life would have been like if he had Daisy in his arms again. Gatsby left to war and this is why Daisy left him. He wishes that he never let her go. He believes that he should be living the life of Tom because he has his dream of having Daisy. He wishes to see Daisy once again so they can rekindle their love for each other. Every weekend, Gatsby throws a party hoping that Daisy will come and be won over by Gatsby's success. Gatsby is jealous of Tom because he wants Daisy to be in his arms again. "She was feeling the pressure of the world..." (Fitzgerald, pg 151). In this quote, it shows that Daisy makes poor choices because she lets others influence her decisions. She lets pressure get to her and does not make choices that will lead to her own happiness. She is too focused on what others may think and is overall confused. " 'She's not leaving me... Certainly not for a common swindler who'd have to steal the ring he put on her finger,' " (Fitzgerald, pg 133). This quote shows how Tom has power over Daisy and does not let her make her own choices. It creates a negative and unpleasant mood. Tom tells Daisy that she is not allowed to leave him for Gatsby. Daisy wants to leave Tom because she is in love with Gatsby, but Tom will not let that happen. Tom and Daisy are still together in the end, but if Daisy wanted happiness she should have chosen Gatsby. This song relates to the song "Beale Street Blues" because Gatsby wants to be any place that he knows as long as it is with Daisy. This song conveys the desired mood because it shows how Gatsby wishes he could have Daisy and the he feels regret and sadness without her.

"The scars of our love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could have had it all"

Gatsby has always had a dream of being with Daisy. This dream is unable to happen, however, because daisy chooses to stay with Tom. Daisy makes Gatsby believe that they have a future together, but she knows that it could never happen because she is so worried about what others would think of her. She does not want to get judged for marrying someone she didn't love and be accused of adultery. Daisy and Gatsby could have had it all because Gatsby would have given the world to her.
This song also relates to chapter 4 when daisy received a letter from Gatsby shortly before she was about to get married. After she realizes that she made the wrong choice of marrying Tom and that she still is in lives with Gatsby. If Daisy stayed with Gatsby, she would have had everything she wanted. "She wouldn't let go of the letter. She took it into the tub with her and squeezed it into a wet ball.." (Fitzgerald, pg 76). This letter was a letter from Gatsby. As soon as Daisy got a hold of the letter, she would not let go. She realized immediately that she had made a poor choice, and she was still passionately in love with Gatsby. She could have had everything that she wanted if she stayed with Gatsby. Daisy has always looked for clarity in her life, but has never found it so she lets other make her choices for her. Daisy made poor choices and should have chosen Gatsby. This song relates to "Beale Street Blues" because both songs describe the dullness of daisy life and how she should have stayed with Gatsby. This song would have conveyed the desired mood because it would show how Daisy felt after she left Gatsby and how she really could have had it all.

"In the morning,
In the evening,
Ain’t we got fun—
One thing’s for sure and nothing’s surer
The rich get richer and the poor get— children
In the meantime,
In between time—“

This song is referenced in chapter 6. It is played on the piano in the reunion of Daisy and Gatsby. "All the lights were going on in West Egg now... excitement was generating on the air," (Fitzgerald, pg 101). This song symbolizes the pleasure of attending Gatsby's parties. People found joy because of all of the things that Gatsby's house had to offer. This song is an important element of the story because it clearly demonstrates the mood of this scene. The reader can tell that Gatsby's parties are full of thrill and delight. Fitzgerald utilizes this song in this scene because he wanted the audience to capture the joyousness of Gatsby's parties and the atmosphere in them. This song also tells the reader that the people at Gatsby's parties have no cares when they attend and they go there to simply enjoy themselves and others and have fun.

"I'd rather be there than any place I know,
I'd rather be there than any place I know,
It's gonna take a sergeant for to make me go!"

"All night the saxophones wailed the hopeless comment of the Beale Street Blues while a hundred pairs of golden and silver slippers shuffled the shining dust," (Fitzgerald, pg 151). The paragraph is describing Daisy after Gatsby had left for the war. She believed that she was madly in love with him, and he was still in love with her, but once Gatsby left, Daisy was unsure of her feelings. She lets other make her decisions for her because she is so confused. She in unsure of herself and soon marries Tom because of superficial pleasures. There was not very many times that she was definite about her actions. The lyrics of this popular song can describe her life. It shows the dullness of Daisy's artificial life and how she is unsure of herself and her feelings. It creates a mood of sadness and despair for Daisy because she longs to have Gatsby in her arms again. This reader is able to recognize this mood because we can see the sadness that Daisy's decisions have given her. Fitzgerald places this music in the scene to show Daisy's mood as she holds the letter.

"It's three o'clock in the morning
We've danced the whole night through
And daylight soon will be dawning
Just one more waltz with you"

This song plays as Daisy and Tom were leaving Gatsby's party late at night. "Gatsby and Daisy danced. I remember being surprised by his graceful, conservative fox-trot. I had never seen him dance before," (Fitzgerald, pg 128). Gatsby and Daisy have clear feelings for each other. A they dance, they know that they had both made poor decisions that have lead them away from each other. Daisy knows she should not have left Gatsby and married Tom. She regrets not being with Gatsby and waiting for him as he went to war. The reader can see not only in this scene that Daisy regrets her choices but also when she holds the letter from Gatsby shortly before she marries Tom. Daisy is finally happy with Gatsby. This song provides a positive and uplifting mood because Gatsby and Daisy have rekindled their love. The reader is able to distinguish this mood because the lyrics in the song are also cheerful. Fitzgerald uses this technique of incorporating music in this scene to show how Daisy and Gatsby feel about each other. It is obvious that they are once again in love.
