A. What is the Problem and What are the Root Causes of the Problem?

Women’s rights have always been an issue in Saudi Arabia. Basic human rights were not given to any women in the past. This is changing slowly, but too slow. In the summer, the driving ban for women was finally raised, but just before this, a group of young females was arrested for posting a video of themselves driving. In Saudi Arabia, any activists for women's rights are arrested. The worst is what happens after they are arrested. Recently, imprisoned activists have told their stories of the torture they receive in prison. The women who are just beginning to stand up for their rights are experiencing electrocution, waterboarding, whipping and sexually harassment. For some young activists, the Saudi government seeks death penalties as their punishment. The excuse for all of this mistreatment is the Islam religion. The government has never denied any of this, and they claim that it is the correct thing to do because of the religion. Even families use the religion as an excuse for the mistreatment of their female family members. Male guardianship is when a male family member is in charge of a woman. This system is used by many Islam families in Saudi Arabia to keep their women “in check.” You could have your grandfather, father, brother, or even your son in charge of you. With male guardianship in your family, running away is a punishable crime. You could be confined and abused. So as women’s rights are slowly improving, they are still in terrible condition in Saudi Arabia.

B. How has the Problem Affected the Community Directly?

Many people have been affected by the conditions in Saudi Arabia. Many groups of protesting women have been arrested. Recently, a young teenager was forced to flee her controlling relatives in Saudi Arabia. As this is a crime in the country, the Saudi government fought to bring her back and punished, but the UN gave her asylum in Canada. Factors like these are the reason why Saudi Arabia is the fifth worst country for women to live in. Not only is this country dangerous for women, it is also dangerous for the men who support them. Jamal Khashoggi was a reporter for the Washington Post and a number of Saudi papers. On October 2nd he was visiting the Riyadh consulate in Istanbul when he was murdered. Khashoggi had criticized the government’s way of dealing with women’s rights along with many other political problems. The United Nations have inspected this case and discovered that authorities, and maybe even the Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman Al Saud, were involved. Days after, the Crown Prince’s media adviser, Saud al-Qahtani was fired and went missing. He is a prime suspect for the murder. The community is a dangerous environment for anyone to express their feelings about this issue, women and men included.

C. Why Should the Rest of the World be Concerned About this Issue?

The rest of the world should be concerned about this issue because Saudi Arabia is not the only country with these conditions. In fact, there are worse countries. India is the most dangerous country for women in the world. Factors such as abuse, sexual harassment and unpaid labor made India beat Saudi Arabia by four slots. Similar to Saudi Arabia, a driving ban on Indian women has just been lifted. Another issue is when Saudi women go out of their country. Up until when Rahaf Alqunun was granted asylum, fleeing women have always been sent back to Saudi Arabia. They are sent back to torture, confinement and even death.

D. What is Currently being Done to Address this Problem?

Steps have been taken to address this problem recently and only recently. The driving ban on women was lifted last year. At the beginning of this year, it became a law that men could not divorce their wives without alerting them through text. And in 2018, women were allowed in sports stadiums. All of this was because of the crown prince’s promise to improve the political problems in Saudi Arabia. This somehow was a twisted promise, because he has arrested many women and seeked punishments for activists. It is revolutionary for the women in Saudi Arabia to begin their protesting, because it was a rare sight in the past. This protesting may have made matters worse though, because of the consequences these women have to face.
