  • Phonemic awareness - Exercise that gives the ability to identify and manipulate sounds in words. 
  • Phonics- strategy that teaches the learner(s) how to read and write an alphabetic language. Phonics displays the relationship in sounds of words, letters, groups of letters, and the spoken language. 
  • Fluency- the ability to speak or write language easily and accurately.
  • Vocabulary-  the ability to read accurately, quickly and expressively.
  • Comprehension- Understanding and interpretation of words read.

  • Phonemic Awareness- A great exercise to use when reinforcing Phonemic Awareness and Phonics is to engage students in fun activities. One activity that is exciting and easy to engage students in learning will be “Clapping it Out”. Clapping It Out offers the ability to master syllables in various ways. Identifying 1 word,2 and 3 syllables. (Learn With Homer,2021)

  •  Fluency- Reinforcing fluency in class should be viewed as on going practice in reading aloud as a group, reading the same material to build confidence in reading structure and pace, and developing strong sentence structure. 
  • Vocabulary- Learning vocabulary words from a student perspective can be intense. It is best to make learning the words and definitions fun by engaging students in vocabulary games and word of the week activities that can be displayed on the smart board or bulletin board. Engage class in group exercises providing heavy emphasis on vocabulary words until they have mastered this exercise. As they improve this skill, engage students in choosing words from list to work on by the end of the week. 
  • Comprehension- The best approach to improving students comprehension that I have utilized and see myself continuing to rely on was the before, during, and after-reading exercises. Having an open discussion with students helps students gain a better perspective of the reading before immersing themselves into the activity with a greater understanding of what is to come within the reading. 
  •  Activities that involves singing may be a good approach to use to assist with mastering comprehension in assignment. 
  • Adopting the clapping strategy with the different syllables can assist students with identifying 1,2,or/and 3 word syllables. Clapping syllables is a fun learning experience for students.

  • Phonic reinforcement of supporting writing activities dwell from hearing sounds and identifying words that assist with decoding the familiar and unfamiliar words. 
  • Phonemic Awareness supports writing by assisting learners to bring their knowledge of letters and sounds for a purposeful message to be written.(VSG,2018) 

  • Fluency and vocabulary- Something that most certainly brought an improvement in my writing is simply writing more. Yes, reading articles and books I found interesting did come in handy when it comes to vocabulary, grammar and sentence transformations.(ReporterRTI.edu,2018)
