The Archives

Dear Friends

I am sharing a brief introduction to the archives.
Archival items are papers, items etc. which are of historical value. They have a significance to the history, growth and functioning of the community and the people in it.
Some of you may have items stored away that you consider may be donated to the Baha’i community one day.
I need to advise you that an item that you may think of as being valuable, may not be from and archival perspective. Each separate item needs to be examined as to its merit or otherwise.
If any item that is donated to the archives is not considered necessary to be included in the archives, then it would be disposed of by offering it to members of the community, or another community, perhaps free or for a donation, or discarded.

If you know that you have any records or items that are being stored with you but actually do belong to the Hamilton Baha’i community will you please contact me.
I would be happy to answer any questions that you may have.

The library committee is finalizing it’s Annual Report and preparing a budget for the upcoming year.

The Baháʼí calendar is a solar calendar consisting of nineteen months and four or five intercalary days. The first day of each year (Naw-Rúz) is the day (from sunset to sunset) in Tehran containing the moment of the vernal equinox (northern spring equinox). Each month is named after a virtue (e.g., Perfection, Mercy), as are the days of the week. The first year is dated from 1844 CE, the year in which the Báb's Revelation began. There are eleven Holy Days, which are important anniversaries in the history of the Baháʼí Faith. On nine of these Holy Days, work is suspended. There is no fixed format for any of the Holy Days, and Baháʼí communities organize their own commemorative gatherings. All but two of the Holy Days are scheduled annually on fixed dates in the Baháʼí calendar. The Twin Holy Birthdays are scheduled annually according to a lunar calculation. Besides the eleven Holy Days, Baháʼís also celebrate Ayyám-i-Há, a period of several extra days in the calendar (followed by the Nineteen-Day Fast).

Have you ever said to someone "I'm praying for you" and wish you could do more but weren't sure how or what else to do? Have you wanted to support someone who could have used it but you weren't sure how to navigate that while wanting to respect their privacy and honour the admonition against back biting?

We are given the guidance that we should "Be the source of consolation to every sad one, assist every weak one, be helpful to every indigent one, care for every sick one, be the cause of glorification to every lowly one, and shelter those who are overshadowed by fear." But what does this all look like in our every day lives? How can we develop more capacity to meet each other where we are and connect in our struggles as well as our joys?

Suzanne Fani is a Registered Psychotherapist and EMDR Internationally Certified therapist. She graduated from University of Toronto in 1991 and specializes in the areas of: Traumatic stress injuries, Traumatic loss, bereavement, depression, anxiety.

Suzanne has over 25 years of experience in Employee and Family Assistance programs, providing employers and their employees with crisis intervention, case management, and critical incident stress defusing and debriefings. She has worked in both private and public settings including schoolboards, hospitals, universities and community mental health agencies. She has specific training in working with children, families, couples and individuals.

Although front-line workers are her priority, she also treats individuals who are victims of crimes. She specializes in traumatic loss and grief and has worked as a trainer/facilitator for Hospice Niagara Grief Program and as a coordinator/host for the Hospice Foundation of America: Living with Grief Series for several years. More recently, she has worked with Heartache2Hope as a traumatic loss therapist. With in-depth training in many aspects of trauma: Mastering treatment of Complex Trauma, Therapy with Military Veterans, Working Effectively with First Responders, EMDR and Relational Trauma, she views herself as a lifetime learner.

Suzanne is a member of the St. Catharines Baha’i community.

Suzanne will be sharing some concrete resources that will help us explore how to show up for each other in a more empowered and trauma-informed way.
