This morning we set up our 3 padlets and then discussed film genres includig westerns and the 180 rule. In the afternoon we had cameras and experimented with camera angles such as close up, long shots and panning and shots, plus exposure white balance and manual focus. I have never used these before but think they will be use full it's good to know how to do them manually.

Today we discussed the theories of semiotic, the study of signs and how we view things. An illustration was traffic lights - red light mean stop, amber means slow down, green means go. signified means the thing being described. and signifier means the things the object is representing. also we looked at connotations. this afternoon we looked lighting and the three points, back lighting, key lighting and fill lighting. then we set up three lights around a severed head on a pole and took photos of it in different lighting. some of these mad it look scary. this will be useful when we are filming so we can effectively create a mood of our film whether scary or light and funny. i would like to experiment with low key lighting more as i have never had the opportunity to use it so far and i think it could be an interesting project.

Today we have been experimenting with lighting whilst taking pictures, we had a good time doing it and trying different things out, one disadvantage was because the room was small the lights were close to the subject so the shadows were not always dark enough or there would not be a large contrast. i think when we start doing this for a project we will still be experimenting because there are so many things you can do but getting a picture just the way you want it is not always as easy as you think it will be in theory. we also changed the background between a black and white and we discussed the difference you can make, like making the picture bright and the background too but having a subtle injury on one of the people in the picture too make it seem like the people are hiding the truth. also we did more research by looking at social action 2-d print adverts, i looked at RSPCA, THINK and smoking. Then we created a mood board for our own advert - both print and film based - we used some pictures from the internet to show what we want to created as well as some to show the props and to give the overall feel. this was quite fun to do and we were very good at creating ideas with each other and making it better, i feel that some of the group did this better than others and some where a bit quite but there are still trying to help. our idea is coming together well but we can still change our idea as we create it a little to fit around the over all theme. i feel this will also help me when in a group ion the future and coming up with other ideas a sin the past i have only worked with one other person who was happy just to go alone with what i suggested without coming up with their own ideas so today was a change from that, it was good to change the idea together and explore different ideas together.

Today i have had to do an English workshop that felt more and more of a waste of my time. it is really boring and we learnt nothing - this has been the same for all my lessons so far. Also the teachers are not telling us what is happening about getting our exams remarked - i feel really let down by Harlow College. then we have done contextual research on adverts from other cultures and then we have compared them to UK adverts. this had been interesting to see the difference and how companies reach different audiences with the same products. this is something useful when in the job market but because we live in the UK we already know mostly our audience. If i want to work abroad in the future this is defiantly something I will explore more.

Today we have been doing audience theories and comparing the three main theories - hypodermic needle theory, uses and gratification and two step flow - we wrote up, using a template, the strength and weaknesses of each. then we started using photoshop with dave and experimenting with photos that we took a few weeks ago and some we found on google. this was fun. i loved playing around with Jayne's photo and seeing what i could create -it was simple but effective once you learnt how to use it. this skill will be invaluable when we create our own posters and things similar.

today we have been looking at the theory of research and the different ways of getting research, I didn't learn much from this as cliff has already covered most of this with us already. In the afternoon we looked at the editing software premier pro. we took notes on how to import and upload our footage from our cameras and then went and did this on our computers. Sometimes things were a little tricky to work out how to do but mostly it went alright. I started editing a little but the clips are so small I've had to be creative but i am worried it will just look strange. To prevent this next time when filming we will need to make sure we press record a give it a few seconds until the actors begin the action as so we have a bit extra to work with.

Today we have had to do an english session that was not helpful again. then we started doing Vox Pops. this was easy enough to set up over the town with a camera, tripod and i was the cameraman, Jayne the interviewer, kirsten took photos and Gabbie wrote down her observations. this was cold and embarrassing work. we managed to get an older couple to answer and a man who appeared to be mentally challenged. they were nice but the man told us his life story without us asking questions, so when we edited we removed some of his because we did actually need it all. we asked other people but they said no, some people said ok but when they saw the camera they refused. then we created surveys on survey jokey. there was so may problems with the is, first i tried it on my phone on both the internet and the app, neither worked. then on the computer i had a problem with having too many questions and what ones to use, the photos are registered as question but we removed them and but them with a question so they were not. them later my link i had for the survey would not work so i have no results for it but will use the results my teammates have.

today we had another useless english lesson where we didn't learn anything. then were had to learn to use the sound equipment. i didn't learn anything with these because i used the boom pole and shotgun mic last year for our audio project. then we had to film the scene dave created. it went well except for the fact that our director was useless and we found out later that our sound operator didn't press record and we had to film it again. honestly i was an actor along with Julie and we were the directors telling everyone else what we needed to do. i didn't want to do thins but our director was busy on he iPad and kept asking us what we were doing all the time. she was demoted to clapper board person. the main thing i learnt today was if you want something done properly you must micro manage your team mates until you are sure they actually know what they are doing if they prove incapable of doing their assigned job - do it yourself or use someone who can do it. vcv

Myself, Gabbie and Callum worked really well together and we have all been coming up with ideas and improving things together. the main problem was our two other team mates. curtis has been polite and occasionally offering ideas, we were all round the table to ether at some points and the were listing to music and watching video on their iPads. they did do the work we set them but later on Ben L was watching a swearing and violent video - i found this very in appropriate and i said that he should be watching this in class but he said that it was his iPad and he would watch whatever he wanted. i was uncomfortable having him in my group after this. i hope this changes but i don't know if anything will change. tomorrow we have booked out a room to experiment with filming to try to determine what ending we like the most and which will be the most effective. my hopes for working well with my group and this being a great group project are dwindling fast.

today w shave been finishing off the pre-production planning and booked our actors and started some experimental filming. the pre production went quickly and well but only three of us really did much. then we booked actors and they were really excited to try it out they will be with us wednesday 3-5pm. Then after lunch gabbie and I planned to write our location release form out and get delta to sign it for Wednesday next week and for the others to set up the filming equipment and then we would meet them down there. We wrote them a list of all the equipment they would need and we all went to see Dave. When we had the equipment and went to do the form callus cameup to us and said why we aren't coming and we explained but he keptsaying for us to just do it on our iPads no matter how much we explained it would only take a few minutes and they just had to set up the camera but he clearly didn't want to do this on his own. When we got to the room he then started complaining that the room was too small and wasn't right even though he had said previously he new how big the room was. No matter what we did he complained that it wouldn't work or would be a waste of our time even when the suggestions we were making were to help him and solve the problem that he saw. We haven't decided completely on winch wall to use as the background because we will probably have to move some things around in that room. Ben sat there holding the boom pole and only moved the light when told and got some paper for us but he even took a long time doing that because he brought a starnger back with him. When we finished and came back up gabbie began downloading the footage and I tried to write the form but callus again began complaint that we should do the editing on Wednesday but we tried to explain to him that we would be bust with the filming and the setting up of the room. He complained that we should use the motion room instead and that we should do this almost pointless bit of editing on Wednesday.

Today has gone awfully. it started with fishing english half an hour early and when i turned up i met with Gabbie and we waited for the rest of the group, but we discussed what had happened on Facebook messenger last night. our production group has a group hat and last night Gabbie me that she couldn't bring in the white sheets like we plane because they had suddenly gone in the wash late. i said it was ok and i could probably bring in two. but because we needed six i ask the group to see if they could bring any in or not. Callum answered back why i explained what we all had already agreed to on friday that we needed that amount for the morgue scene but callum complained about it and then refused completely. i then sled them to bring in a donation so we could afford to buy some. he then because sarcastic.
Curtis suggested that we might find some in the art department and Callum said it was a good idea. but when we came in this morning and asked him to got to art he refused repeatedly, when asked about why because he said it was a good idea he said it wasn't and that we didn't even need the blankets and said he shouldn't have to because he was the director and that we should to it. but when asked what he was going to do he refused to tell and and was very angry with us telling us that if we had "just asked him to" he would have down it and not to order him around. we realised that he would listen and so turned around to find the others and asked them to go and get the blankets and they said sure. www explained we were going to find someone to sign our location release form and would be back soon. but when we came back we found out that they had told leila that we had "ditched" them and they didn't know where we were and dint care because they didn't like us anyway. they only got one blanket from art and not the four that we needed so we asked them to stick some a3 pieces of paper together so we could cover the tables and make them look white they said that was fine and Gabbie gave them her glue stick. Callum came over at this point and asked us what we were going to do today. Gabbie and I when to try to find Dave to get him to sign our equipment booking form but he was busy so we went to the uni building to try to find Brendon to sign it because its actually his name and the sheet. we could not find him and when we came back up we found that the boys had done nothing but sit on their phones. then we were told by them that we were now using a green screen, this was a complete surprise to us because there had never been any discussion about this, when we asked apparently Leila had had the idea but Gabbie and i tried to explain that this would be complicated unnecessarily but they didn't want to listen. leila came over and we had a group meeting where we tried to explain this again and they seemed to listen to us. then it was lunch time. after lunch Gabbie and I went back to see Tom to get him to sign the location permission form so we could show Dave that we definitely had a staffs permission and we could later book the equipment. then Dave had another team meeting with us to see how we were getting on. we explained it to him and he advised that Callum should try to take a more creative control that he so far hadn't and to work on the shot list with Curits on camera. they went off to do this with the original shot list and Gabbie and I went with Dave to book the equipment. when there we had a discussion about the teams behaviour and he said that there wasn't much he could do but i didn't matter too much how the end product was but more about the production process. as it was 2:45 we told our group that we were going to collect our actors and they should finish up and try to set up the equipment at a bit before three if possible so Curtis could practise with a DSLR camera because he had never used it before. when meeting with our actors we discovered we only had two because tree quit but they were not worries and found about four more people. we also met up with Jayne and Kirsten who had volunteered to hop as actors when they had finished their day. then the girls took the actors to get food and we went to check to see if the everything was set up and we found that almost everything was. then i went to find Dave to ask him if he could come in half an hour to an hour and unlock a room so we could use one of the tables for our morgue scene. then i came back and caught up with the actors in the halls and we went to finish up setting up the room. then we discovered we would need more permission form because we only had 5 and 9 actors and we wanted them all to sign one before filming started. i went to print these out and came back. then discovered that Dave had suggested that we changed the lights because the soft boxes would get hot in the small room, so Gabbie and i went with Dave to get the LED lights, when we brought them back, with their tripods, we set them up with Kirsten and Jayne and found that there were gels to change the colour of the lights, we used the pink/purple and blue ones. it took around 45 minutes to set everything up. then we began filming, i was on clapper board duty. things were a bit chaotic, it was a bit dark for the camera and Callum never said "action" but "Go" and he often wasn't loud enough for the actors to hear and he never said "cut" so the actors had to judge for themselves when they could stop. then we started the morgue scene and we used three actors to be the corpses instead of Gabbie being one like we had planned. this was very funny and we had to practise a couple time because no one could stop laughing. but when we finished we set up and the boys first helped clean then took only the equipment they had brought and Gabbie and i finished tiding and Dave came down to help and take some of the equipment back.

i have been on holiday last week and so have missed three days of the production and have been able to catch up today. i have found that they have only completed less than a half old the advert, only just the party scene. they also added a scene of car to shoe before the crash but i don't like this and think it doesn't work with the advert. once we began i suggested adding a blurred photo of a car crash that we then blur to show for when the crash happens as a transition to the ambulance noises and to the morgue scene instead of having a blank screen. this worked well and we added some light to the picture and faded it with some sirens. all throughout the editing Callum kept disagreeing with ever idea we came up with or changing things that didn't need changing and then removing this later but he was very insist and and wasn't able to be polite and ask but would order Gabbie to do what he wanted and he never liked it if we didn't like one of his ideas. after lunch we cam dup with an idea with Dave's help of shooting a scene of an alcohol bottle and zooming i on it and playing the crashing sound behind it in the editing so the screen wasn't blank because Dave and Cliff believed this wouldn't really work. I asked Curtis and Ben if they would be alright going to do this and they agreed and went to get the equipment. later the three of us went to check on them later to see how they had gotten along and found that they were getting on well, Gabbie and I stayed to help and suggest some ideas and Callum said he would go and do some more editing. the soot went really well and turned out much better that we thought it would - also we all got to see how a track would work and it looks very effective for any work that we might do in another project. after this we went to see how callum had gotten along and upload the footage front he camera to the editing, and found Callum in the motion room with two of his friends fiddling with some of the filming equipment that they had out. Gabbie and i went to do our work with the editing and this went well because we removed one of the car travelling along a road scenes and added the bottle, then we faded the original car scene - by changing the opacity - and played them together, this works really well and has a great effect and make the whole advert better. but when Callum returned he said he got bored half way through when watching it even though it is the same length as the original scene, he also offered no explanation for what he had been doing.

Today we have been finishing off our editing of the advert. it is now complete and posted on youtube. we have had a little help in the beginning before break at 10:30 from Callum, but he mostly just complained and didn't come up with many ideas that we could actually use. then he went for break and was late coming back, Gabbie and I continued editing but he just sat next to Gabbie on his phone not doing anything and not even caring what was going on with the advert. this continued for the rest of the day with him only coming over once in a while to order rudely Gabbie to play him the whole video even though we were clearly busy trying to complete a part of editing, even when we asked him to give us a minute he insisted that he should watch the video and when he did he didn't offer any constructive criticism but just when back to his phone. we also asked Ben and Curtis to record some folly sounds of party like people and drunk singing which they went off to do, i messaged them a few minutes later to ask them to record someone screaming and saying something like "Look out". they were gone for quite a while but we found out later that they were complaining and saying to each other that we should "F**** off" but when they came back they pretended to be polite and said that they could not record that because they had already completed it but they were gone for much longer so I don't know what they were doing the whole time they were gone. Gabbie and I got along well with the editing on our own, we found a lot of free sound effects as well as the recorded ones, we adjusted the sounds and lighting on the footage and made sure the transitions between the shots were smooth and appropriate, also we added some music for the morgue scene which took a little while to find. occasionally Callum would be making a sarcastic comment to us and saying that we were not doing things right, and he even said that Gabbie didn't have to be so sarcastic to him and she replied that he hadn't been behaving well to us and he said that the thought he had been behaving well. then when Hazel came over to borrow our TASCAM connector leed he said sarcastically before we could reply to her that we would just be sarcastic so she should not ask us. all through this project Callum has been disrespectful and rude and a nightmare to work with and once this project is complete i will refuse to ever work with him and Ben and Curtis because they have been no help what so ever and have all been unprofessional and offensive to us because they are lazy and don't work to do the work and Gabbie and I have had to do their share of the work most of the time.

today we gave been getting feedback for our advert campaigns - both 2-D print based and film. Gabbie and i got started straight away on making some focus group question we had to tell the three boys that they could go do some questionnaires. it was difficult to find people who were willing and in a group and not on their own. luckily we went to the marketing department and found two people who were great at giving answers and later after lunch Jayne and Gabbie found two young men who were also happy to help with the focus group group. they all gave good and varied responses that made for an interesting review/write up. we got pictures of what the boys had done and honestly i suspect they got their friends to fill them in from the answers that they gave which dave told us not to do. though out this project they have done very little and today was no different.

Now we have completed our final cut edit and have posted the advert onto youtube. we have removed the morgue scene and the rolling credits and changed the message and added a website and helpline number for people to find out more information if they need it. we have learnt that when copying a clip do not do this on the timeline because any edit you make to one it will make to all of them, instead dot his with a clip that is in a "bin" or media window and put the new one there as well - also change the title so the software knows they are two different clips. it took longer to fix the title than the actual scenes. i think the reviews we received about making these changes was right and now the advert looks so much more professional and i am very pleased with the end results.
