My brother and I were the first to attend college in our family.
I was born into a 5 year generation. I have a few memories with my great-great grandma and I was fortunate to know both sets of great-grandparents on my mom's side until I was the age of 21 :).

Ryan's Story

Hey guys! This is my twin brother Ryan. He currently lives in Sioux Falls and works as a correctional officer at the Minnehaha county jail. Growing up, he was an incredible athlete. He played all sports and landed varsity jerseys in just junior high. He planned to transfer to a bigger school then where we went our senior year to play football where he had more scouts interested in recruiting.
In May 2009 a bunch of his friends went to a party and he tried driving home. He and our foreign exchange student at the time attempted driving home and over-corrected going around a curve. Ryan was driving and they ended up rolling, both not wearing any seatbelts. Fredrik had no injuries besides a concussion but unfortunately Ryan was pinned in a ball under the dashboard. Fredrik ran a few miles to try call 911 but was unable to give them an accurate location. A few fire departments and search and rescue went out to look for them. They ended up finding them over an hour later and they brought in the jaws of life to cut Ryan out. Once he was freed he took a helicopter ride to Sanford in Sioux falls. My mom and I met them in the ER and after some testing, found that he had broken his T9-T11 vertebrae in his back. While waiting for results of the scans, Ryan said he couldn't feel his legs. Unfortunately because of the breaks, he is now paralyzed waist down. We are however VERY blessed that he had no other injuries, not even a scratch on his head! He spent a week in Sanford's ICU and then transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation center in Lincoln, NE for the remainder of rehab. Because he was an athlete and in great shape prior, he was able to go home much quicker as he can move around very well.
Alcohol abuse is real, genetic thing. My dad continues to drink every day and has yet to believe that it runs in the family or that he has a problem. Unfortunately this really affects our relationship. Ryan underwent battles with alcohol for years until the past year. He continued to drink even more, became depressed, got into drugs, and refused to accept that he could never walk again. Now he is helping others by sponsoring at AA, visits high schools to share his successes and struggles, and remains clean and happy!
Thank you for letting me share a brief part of his story with you guys, this is my #1 person and the strongest person I know. I'm sorry that I was unable to get the video uploaded to make it more simpler!
