If you are interested in this and want to find out more there are lots of different types of A&P books available. I would suggest finding one which suits your learning style. The library have lots of different books which you can borrow. When I was a student I found the following books useful. I have attached the links to the library pages for them below.

To clarify, the North West NA group have agreed that you will have one University study day every week for the next 2 years. Where this is timetabled as 'study day' or 'assessment' then I will be giving you work to do in this time or you will have an assessment or you can take annual leave. Your placement can ask you to swop your study day that week e.g. have your study day on Tuesday so you can work a shift on the Wednesday. This time should not be being taken up by other activities as it is a dedicated University day. I will be feeding this back to the Clinical Educators as well. BW Janine

And hey you wouldn't have guessed it on day 1 but you are loving simulation....told you so :-) There are also some good points for us all to learn from too which I will discuss next week. I have decided to release all of the supporting materials so that you can choose what to study and when you study it. If you struggle with this material please do not worry too much although doing a SMART goal and identifying how you can overcome this barrier might be a useful suggestion and including doing some background reading in this. Please remember Jim will be delivering a number of lectures in the next semester and we will be using seminars to apply that knowledge to clinical practice. BW Janine

1: ”It doesn’t say on the first VIVA question anything about explaining the TNA role or why I would orientate a patient to the ward like Janine just said we had to”.

The question states 'explain your evaluation of the patient’s perceived perception of their holistic health & wellbeing'. This is a summary of the patient’s strengths/needs….. However, if this patient is new to the ward then they would need to be orientated to it to reduce anxiety/feel at ease and so they know e.g. where the toilet is/call button. These things all impact on a person’s health and wellbeing so I would start it with a very quick ‘I conducted an introduction consisting of my name and role, checked the patients name and orientated to the ward – this is important for someone’s health and wellbeing because it reduces anxiety.(if a community scenario you might say that you introduced self, checked correct patient and observed the home environment because that gives you an indication of health & wellbeing). I then asked about physical aspects of health & wellbeing and for this patient the 2 main areas were……..these issues are important for a TNA to know about because……..I then asked about psychological aspects of health and wellbeing and this patient was particularly worried about….. it is important for me as a TNA to consider psychological aspects such as this because…..etc etc

In terms of the second part of the question given the patients’ needs as a TNA I would………

2: ‘Do we have to wash their hands before the OSCE starts, when it first starts or not at all?’
No you do not need to wash your hands unless you are touching the patient (which we do not want you to do) we will assume you have followed correct infection control procedures.

3: ‘Will there be a clock and will we get a warning near the end? For example ‘you have got 2 minutes?’
You will need your own clock for the OSCE but you will be given a 5 minute warning. There will be a clock available for the viva.

4: Where do we go on OSCE day?
There is a waiting room MS223 which you need to come to 15 minutes before your OSCE. You will need to bring all paperwork with you that you need. You can use any crib sheet for the OSCE, you cannot use any papers for the Viva.

5: Does the viva take place straight after the OSCE?
Yes and you will need to manage the 10 minutes – you have 3 questions so make sure you give yourself chance to answer all 3.

6: The third question of the viva asks specifically about learning from ‘undertaking this assessment’ but Janine said to think about learning over the last three months -what do we do?
The last 3 months have all been focused on enhancing your clinical and professional skills to develop your clinical practice and the assessment for this is the OSCE. This means that you can draw on any learning point from the last 3 months that has enhanced your professional, interpersonal or holistic approach to health & wellbeing even if not directly applicable to the OSCE itself (as it has helped you prepare for it incase it came up and it has enhanced your clinical practice). For example you may talk about cultural competence and the importance for a TNA to demonstrate knowledge and skills in this area you might say it wasn’t directly related to this patient encounter but last week when you were working with a lady on the ward and it was important because….

Please feel free to post any other questions below and I will endeavor to answer...
