In order to ensure that all students are capable of achieving at school, it is imperative that they all feel safe (Twemlow, Fonagy & Sacco, 2002).
In fact, research as shown that feeling safe at school is an emotional necessity for children in order for them to learn and make progress at school. This also aligns with Maslow's hierarchy of needs in which one of the first needs was the need to be safe has to be met before the other needs such as esteem and self- actualization can be fulfilled. Esteem and self-actualization are vital components to learning and achievements. If students do not reach this level of needs, then their true potential or academic success will suffer or decline.
