This book is about a teenage boy named Jacob who soon discovers the hidden secrets his grandfather has subtly tried to keep from him. After he’s discovered the terrifying truth about his grandfather, the responsibilities he once had now bestowed upon Jacob, forcing him to accomplish what his grandfather never got to finish. As he explores the hidden mysteries that were abandoned by his grandfather on an island distances away from any form of mass population, he comes across the most well-known mystery his grandfather told legends about in far away cavern. Which was the home to Miss Peregrine’s peculiar children. He learns about them, connects with them as if they were family, and tries to understand the world they lived in and how it works. But while doing so, he is informed that the acknowledgment of the outside world isn’t the only problem they’re facing. A much more dangerous situation will potentially surface for them. So it is all up to Jacob prove to them that he has what it takes to protect Miss Peregrine’s children from the dangers they’ll face up ahead on their journey.

My Thoughts

What I really enjoy about the book is how immersive, mysterious, and thought-provoking it is. Especially when beginning to read a new chapter. Every chapter progresses through the story so intriguingly well, it allows the reader to continue critically thinking about what’s going to happen in the next chapter. However, in my opinion, I don’t really like how prolonging some subplots are in most chapters. But although most chapters have a prolonging subplot, I really enjoyed the context they conveyed through the overall story. The bond Jacob progressively formed with Miss Peregrine and her children was what got me interested because I did not only get to understand how distant they were kept from the world outside of their own, but also the history of it and why it even exists where no one other than Miss Peregrine and themselves could find it. Overall, it got me very intrigued to know more about the history of Miss Peregrine’s peculiar children and how well they’ll be able to work with Jacob who’s barely peculiar as Miss Peregrines’ children are. While reading this book, the most noticeable connection I could make with it is how I’d usually view myself with the friends I know the most. It’s relatable to me because in the beginning chapters, Jacob was treated unfairly by people he couldn’t really befriend due to his obsessions over thing others mostly found to be abnormal. But in later chapters, once Jacob meets up with Miss Peregrine’s peculiar children, he begin to feel right at home because he felt like he connected to them. A connection he was able to bond with since he understood how unfair they’d be treated due to their natural peculiarity.

It shows that even if he didn’t believe in everything his grandfather told him, it didn’t mean that he doesn’t want to.

Recommendation

I’d like to recommend this book to those who enjoy mysterious and intimidating type of books with a very intriguing and prolonging story. It’ll force you to critically think and theorize on what’ll happen next in every chapter while also leaving you feeling invested in the characters and how well they’re relationship develops as the story continues. However, for the readers who also like to read books because of the huge amount of patience they hold when developing characters and building the world revolved, I believe this will also be quite the recommendation for them as well. But to those seeking an intriguing story overall, this a recommendation that’ll be guaranteed to suit everyone who loves reading. A book like this will surely put you through an intriguing adventure, no matter what type of reader you are.
