When Finny's leg is injured, realizes that he is going to settle for playing sports vicariously through Gene when he tells Gene that if he "can't play sports, you're going to play them for me" (85). Gene cannot evade Finny's manipulative, yet kind, power because Gene "[looses] part of [himself] to [Finny] then, and a soaring sense of freedom revealed that this must have been [his] purpose from the first: to become a part of Phineas" (85).
