Stalin attempted to increase faith in communism and in himself, he made himself seem like a god-like figure. 
Used posters, news, radio.
Modern technology was used to spread the "good" in communism and the evils of capitalism, propaganda, within schools, factories, villages and all soviet citizens.
Stalin required artist and writers to go along with socialist realism.
The state controlled what artist and writers could put out in the country. 
Those who disobeyed the socialist realism ways were not treated well for example Osip Mandelstam, whom was imprisoned, tortured, and exiled for composing a satirical verse about stalin.
