This was such an influential album in its time. It was also a way for Dr. Dre himself to make a name as a rapper rather than a producer. Later in his career he was also a catalyst and gave platforms to some of the best American rappers of all time with likes of 50 cent and Eminem to name a couple. The album itself also led to another influential album called Still Dre proving that he has never changed after people saying that he turned to pop music thus creating controversy amongst him and his fanbase.

This album is one of the greatest albums of all time according to hardcore rap critics. The cover is a picture of Nas himself as a kid but the background is a picture of the streets. With strong eye contact looking out towards the city scape, shows what his upbringing was like during this period of time. The album itself talks about his life and what it was like. The photographer who shot the album was Danny Clinch who has done a lot of other photoshoots with other musicians like Post Malone, Jay-Z, Tupac etc. The art director for the album was Aimee Macauley

Probably the most political album in terms of black history and how it told a story between the black community in Compton and the police. Most of it talks about racial profiling, racism and some other themes to do with the police. They had a really influential space from their music, to their clothes and how they act. They also had a very rough and tough persona which is embodied through the album cover and their tracks as well but most of their rap, they themselves call it is 'the power of street knowledge'. The album cover was designed by Helane Freeman who is a digital and traditional artist.

The album itself epitomises the character and enigma that is MF Doom. The cover art itself is meant to represent a comic book villain by highlighting the mask while having one eye showing hence the name Madvillainy. The album was shot by Eric Coleman and it is designed by Jeff Jank.

One of the most infamous albums considering that Biggie died straight after releasing this album. I was always like he knew that it would be farewell for him at that point. This was very captivating and it did big numbers considering that the rise of popularity was due to the fact that he was dead. People have a habit that they would discover people very late, sometimes too late. The album had a very eerie nature to it because of the circumstances.

This also has eerie tones as well, and was released after a really famous incident that almost saw the loss of 50 Cent. He walked out of a nightclub and was shot 9 times in the chest where he ended up in critical condition but he miraculously survived. He also mentions in one of his tracks that he was shot 9 times but he walks with a limp. The album cover is bold and striking with the glass crack in the middle with a hole showing the cross. He has a strong faith in christianity but he acts like a thug showing the contradiction in his nature. The glass shatter almost looks like a bullet hole which again links to that famous incident.

This album was written about his past and how he was an ex-gang member in Manchester and how he got caught, hence the name facing time. It is almost a reflection on his past on how he got a gun pulled out on him or about his best friend dying. He used to be a gang member in Manchester but now he is a chart topping artist and work with many influential singers and rappers on the scene like Tom Grennan, Dermot Kennedy, Chip, Emelie Sande and many more. He had a rough child hood because of his living condition and was born into a family of criminals. He never saw his biological dad, ended up in prison before his GCSE's which he never did. But while he was in prison he found boxing and turned it into his hobby which kept him away from the streets and he managed to instil and level of discipline and a strong work ethic. In his rap lyrics he would always talk about his life and where he came from. He became a massive inspiration to many others because of his pat life and what he had to go through and his fans, including myself, highly admire that.

I am using this album as well because Eminem himself was one of the most influential rappers and public figures during that era of rap. He was also a controversial rap icon because he of his skin colour and tried to talk about rough circumstance. People would look at him and say that a white man can't rap because they have nice lives families and don't know the street life, that was until people really saw what he had to endure in the movie 'Eight Mile'. He took it further to the TV and created a persona that he dubbed as slim shady which is a more sadistic version of himself. He also released an album called the real slim shady which was his debut alum which topped many charts. His popularity grew but he also had a lot of demons that followed him but got bigger because of the life that he was living which was drug and alcohol infested. As of recently, he managed to go to rehab and has managed many years of sobriety and tries to stay away form his demons. Not only that he uses music to talk about his life and how he has managed to cope and a lot of news reporter and media outlets would slander him without know the true state of impact he has on many generation because of the life he lives and use to live.

The way the composition and the lighting sits in a natural state and waited for the right time to shoot the image.

The reason why I picked this image is to so I can use the lighting and the composition. The way everything sits seems right but the context behind. He looks at the industry and how the dam affects the water. The story behind it makes the image itself better and that is what I want within my story, I want that 'why am I doing it?' moment.

Dorothea Lang - The Great Depression

This project by Dorothea Lang is a documentation about the Great Depression. This period in America made it very difficult for a lot of families to live. They would mainly live off rations and try to save as much money as they can. The men in the family would be the main earners and the women would ultimately take care of the kids and made sure that they were fed and looked after. The time period is a lot more different compared to now, now there is more equality in terms of pay and workers rights but there is still some work to be done in terms of behaviour but that can be always be worked on.

The main reason why I picked Lang's work is because she looks at community and how it is formed through difficulty. The different communities in these images all have a similarity and that is struggle. It is always shown in different ways but in this image it is shown through how they are getting the water. Again I want this level of story telling because although it is very simple there is a lot of depth in the way that it was shot.

This is the first experiment of the and I think I have to go back to the drawing board in terms of how I am going to shoot it. The idea of the glass ball is really good because it is something different but for me to get the shot completely pin sharp takes a lot of skill and I don't have that level of skill yet but what I am going to do instead is use a circular object and shoot though it so I can get a more sharper image. I am thinking of using either toilet roll or a piece of paper rolled in a circle, so hopefully I will have a better time shooting it because I found it difficult to find the right quality and sharpness.

Both Dave and Paola said that they liked the image and said that I have managed to find a good starting point. They both that I have to just shoot more and find a way to get a more sharper and meaningful image.

Next week, I will do another shoot and test another method to shoot the image. I will also do some more research on the idea itself and find a way to make a story through the image

This week we did extensive planning and research as a class for our own projects. We took the time to draw up sketches and talk about the project. The further I took the project the more I have been thinking about time. The reason I was thinking about this is because no matter where what time or place the problems were relatively the same.

So I drew a vision of what I wanted the final piece to be and why I wanted it to take that shape. I decided to take an approach where I took a clock and a scene and make it so that the scene would correspond with the time. So if I took the image at 15:45 the clock would be at 15:45 with the image behind it as the clock piece.

I have managed to buy some clock hands and mechanisms from amazon. The hands were different shapes and sizes so I can try and find the right one when I am testing out what works best. I have a photoshoot this week which I will be testing the idea to see what I can do with the current clock idea.

She also talked about her own collective and how they have worked together to create their content and what they have done over the years. The workshop was more centred around what we can do in the future as photographers rather than talking about artists work. It was more about taking chances and see what opportunities we could have.

This week we had a workshop with Simon and had a look at his work about 'crowd theory'. This is a piece that he started in Australia and then took it to the UK. The work itself looks at the bases of how a crowd works and how they operate in certain scenarios. The images itself are really large prints that spans over 2 meters which makes it a lot more impressive. This workshop was to give us an idea on how we can expand our practice in terms of printing which is a very difficult thing to get right because with my new images if you looked at it from an A4 perspective it is a bit too small whereas when I printed it s a A3 it looked far more better because of what I have put on the foreground it makes more sense to go bigger than what I needed to.

This week we talked about what everyone's role was going to be. All of my loving lecturers banded together and made me the leader of the whole exhibition. At first I had my reservations and felt very nervous in taking that role but then I thought to myself I have nothing to lose and more to gain if anything. I am going to be the leader of an exhibition and I can use this as an experience and learning curve in which I will try my best to try and make this a very good and smooth experience with everyone. My class seemed somewhat happy that I was the leader considering that I have no quarrel with everyone it was really a no brainer on why I was going to get picked and I will try to be the best leader possible and try to make things work as much as they can. We also created a go fund me today to start the fundraising and got the social media team to quickly drum up some noise on that on the LSBU photography instagram, so we made a strong start on that aspect.

Also as a side note in my project I have decided to ditch the idea of the clock and decided to shot then as hard-hitting images and show the actually reality of the life of area that have been effected by gangs.

I told him that I want to change the project so it can fit the theme more in terms what I am going to do. He said that idea of time and the clock itself is interesting so he told me not to rule out that idea completely, but then we started talking about the possibility of creating an album cover. I said that is far more interesting and like the way that he was thinking because the idea of music and gangs go well but I want to continue with the clock idea for another week and see what I can manage to do.

I am going to be doing a photoshoot in coming week so I be able to create something with the idea but if I do not like it I will rework the idea completely and find a different way to shoot meh story and vision.

This week we managed to raise some money for the fundraiser and managed to get almost a £100 which is a big turnaround within a week so we are on course to hitting our target. The design team are working on the poster so that the social media team can have a chance to talk about the exhibition so they should soon get a poster on that. Also we will be doing a headshot fundraiser to raise more money for the exhibition. Finally the catalogue team are woking on a book dummy and finding a way to fit everyone's work into to one book as well as trying to figure out whether to make it or print it externally.

The basis of the idea it to represent that anything can be a clock but I am starting to find a way to interweave the pilot project a little bit because I spoke to the person who runs the post office and he would say that gang members would but bags inside the clothes bank and people would come by and pick them up in a van and transport them. There is also a torched ca which is not too far from me showing that the police of the council don't do anything to help in anyway. The basis of the project has now changed from doing a project based on the roughness of the area and moving back to gang related activity which makes more sense in my eyes because the project itself is not too dissimilar from what I am doing now.

A lot of gang activity or gangs in general are heavily linked with music. In the UK you have different styles of rap like Hip Hop, Grime and Drill. All of these genres talk about the life and how they glamourise it when really the path in this life is highly dangerous and possibly can get you killed. That is the harsh reality that I want to portray in my images.

The pair was ok and didn't make a massive difference but then I thought the content that I showed in the images. I felt like I could've done much better and I didn't take into consideration about the project in anyway. The project kind of lost meaning and I didn't like this result at all.

The feedback that I got from everyone is that I needed to find a way to weave a coherent project rather than looking at the design aspect of it. I will say that I always focus on making it look good rather than making it make sense. It is one of those things that I always do and it is something that I can't change but now I am going to look into more album covers due to what Dave said. He said to be me that the project that I am producing almost looks like an album cover because of the size of it. The prints were meant to represent how things are not changing but maybe I can do that through stories rather than design. I am going to make a is it to the post office worker and get his opinions on the situation as they have a pulse on the whole community and maybe I can use the stories and make them almost come true.

Right now I am going to go back to square one and now lean into the ideas of doing albums now and make album covers. The more I thought about the more I thought that the project I am doing last year is very similar now but instead I am doing a direct campaign rather than a cry for help.

This week I am going to do research on some of the greatest hip hop/rap albums of all time. Some of the albums I can think off of the top of my head is Nas' Illmatic and 50 Cent's Get rich or die tryin'. These albums was a meaning of depiction for the life that both of these rappers used to live but due to certain events around the USA at the time these types albums got a bad rep from the media outlets saying that the younger generation are getting brain washed into thinking violently which is not the case in anyway because if you listen to some of the lyrics it talks about their past and how they had to grow up. In one of 50 Cent's songs he talked about being shot 9 times in the chest and being fine from it, the media painted some of the lyrics in a bad light because of the amount of shootings that where going on but he simply made a statement on what happened to him at the time.

I showed Dave all of the research I have done into the albums and he said one thing and this is something that needed to do, which is making it striking and eye-catching. The reason he said this is because all of the greatest albums had a high level of production and I had to hit that mark in order to make things right and also talk about how I can show my cognitive thinking.

One way that I could do that is by making double sided album covers and have them framed. We also talked about having some images that related to the theme to some of the albums to show the critical thinking and having that ultimate why.

I have kind of figured out why I am doing it which is a big thing in my opinion because it gives me a chance to create what I need to. Having a clear vision is important during this time. My ultimate why is I want to campaign for the gang violence in my area. I wanted to show that it is not a glamorous life because it is always glamourised by certain people. One of the ways that I have managed to that show that is through music specifically through the 90's and the early 2000's. This was the best period for hip hop because of the way people would rap about their struggles and how they have made it out, nowadays it doesn't seem that genuine sometimes unless they have already been to prison. I just wanted to show people that this life is not easy to live in any way shape or form.

I will also be framing my images and I about 5 box frames Amazon andI tested them out beforehand from hobby craft so it isn't a massive problem in terms of getting the prints rights it's more about whether they will arrive on time.
