Pieces of her missing.' He stopped... 'Pieces of her missing,' he said again. His body trembled..." (pg 24) This is a connection between the black dog and Henry's brother, Franklin, who is currently in the hospital after getting hit by a car. His arm is missing, and there are pieces of black dog missing, which reminds the father of his injured son. This reveals that Henry's father is very emotional when it comes to subjects such as his son, even if it is not addressed directly. Many people think that fathers are always the tough, strong ones, but Henry's father has a soft spot for his son, which most fathers have too.
