Jeff Buckley is one of my biggest influences. He has influenced me when it comes to my choice of instrument the guitar, his vibrato within his voice and even the vocal range I attempt within my creations. when creating my own songs, I unknowingly gravitate towards a similar angst that is present in a lot of Jeff's pieces. Examples of this "angst" I'm referring to can be heard in songs such as "So Real" or "Lover, You Should've Come Over". I find that this is especially apparent when I'm working with instrumental (rather than electronically made) music.

Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin was Jeff Buckley's biggest influence. A Rolling Stone article reports that Jeff's friend Chris Dowd told Uncut in 2015, "They actually cried when they met each other. Jimmy heard himself in Jeff, and Jeff was meeting his idol. Jimmy Page was the godfather of Jeff's music." (Runtagh J., Rolling Stone, 2019) Jeff Buckley has even done covers of some of the bands songs such as "Night Flight" (Jeff Buckley, 1993) and "When The Levee Breaks" (Jeff Buckley, 1996), which again clearly shows the love and appreciation he has for the band.

Bob Dylan is very well known for his lyricism and Jeff Buckley was a competent poet and lyricist also. Aimee Ferrier, writing for Farout Magazine wrote of Jeff, "One of his biggest inspirations when it came to writing lyrics was folk legend Bob Dylan."( Farout Magazine 2022) Jeff Buckley has also done a bunch of covers of Bob Dylan's Music which include songs such as "Just like a woman" (Jeff Buckley, 1993) and "Mama, You've Been On My Mind" (Jeff Buckley, 1994), which shows his appreciation for his inspirations and idols.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a Pakistani artist who was renowned for his Sufi Muslim devotional music. Included in his songs are amazing vibrato and as well as mid to high pitch interchanges within each note that's known as solfege. In terms of the evolution of the artist, Nusrat was a good influence when it came to vocal techniques for Jeff Buckley. On Jeffs later work there are a lot of similarities with the techniques being used. Jeff Buckley showed so much appreciation for Nusrat that he's even quoted to say in his "Live At The Sin-e" performance "He's my Elvis.. That's my guy."(Jeff Buckley, Live At The Sin-e, 1993)

Deftones

Deftones has influenced me through multiple scales, when I first heard their music i was utterly amazed. Chino Moreno who is the lead singer has inspired me the most within the group. This is because of his extremely unique vocal style and ability. We can see his vocal range within his songs such as "Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)" or "Bored". In these songs his voice is soft and quite angelic, then cuts to a violent high note that really sticks to your soul. This technique is present in a lot of the bands songs and really stuck with me. Another thing I was influenced by was their instrumentals. Their genre bending sounds that at times felt heavy, and then also felt superbly angelic within a rough context really shape the sounds I look for when searching for the right melodies and guitar progressions.

The Cure is a experimental band that is generally categorized as post punk, gothic rock, new wave. These elements of genre are also be seen within Deftones. Like The Cure, Deftones frequently push for experimental sounds. Examples of this are the vocal and instrumental effects and synths that they both more or less use. There are actually a lot of similarities in Robert Smith the lead singer of The Cure, and Chino Morenos voice. They both use similar tones, pronunciation of words and reaching of vocals. Its quite evident when comparing a lot of their music, for example in Deftones's song "Knife Party" (Deftones, White Pony, 2000) and in The Cures song "Disintegration". (The Cure, Disintegration, 1989)

Faith No More is a band that mixes alternative rock, metal and experimental sounds, which is quite similar to Deftones. The lead singer of Deftones Chino Moreno has even stated when talking about the bands inspirations that Faith No More was a big influence, especially when Deftones were figuring out their sound "We were influenced by a lot of bands, obviously Metallica at the time, but faith no more for instance." (BangerTV, 2010). Chino Morenos vocals are creatively all over the place, his vocal range within his songs can go from heavy screaming, rapping, melodic vocals and even whispering. These elements can also be found within Faith No More.

Hum are a underground band that have works dating back to 1991, which put them around the same time Deftones first started. This however didn't stop their album "You'd Prefer an astronaut" (Hum, 1995) from being a huge influence on Deftones biggest album "White Pony" (Deftones, 2000). This is even stated by Chino Moreno who said in his interview with Bakers Dozen "This is a heavy record, and its where Deftones get a big part of their influence from, tone- wise." (Turne L., Bakers Dozen, 2010). Hums genre is alternative rock and indie, their alternative sounds are quite similar to Deftones. This is clear in their guitar riffs, experimental effects with their instruments, and even the whole feel of the instrumental. The vocals however, differ completely.
