Dr. Pilley was able to utilize errorless learning and positive reinforcement to further his cognitive research with Chaser. This resulted in her being well known as the smartest dog in the world and it allowed him to have a companion that he was able to work with. Chaser was never forced to do anything and positive reinforcement was utilized. Before getting involved in any research with Chaser, Dr. Pilley was apprehensive of the idea of dogs being cognitively intelligent. He decided to start research with Chaser when he was told that dogs are capable of recognizing their given name and they are able to recognize the names of other animals.
