Music is an enormous part of Mexican culture. Music is almost always a part of a celebration, no matter the size of the celebration. The qualities of Mexican music are: love, country, passion, history, legend and oppression. There are three main genres of traditional Mexican music:

Mariachi

Often played at weddings, quinceañeras, on Mother’s Day, and to serenade women on their birthday

Violins, trumpets, a classical guitar, and a “vihuela” (5 string guitar)

The players in a Mariachi band traditionally wear a “Charro” suit with a sombrero

Originated in the state of Jalisco in the 19th century

Ranchera

Songs are usually about love, patriotism, or nature

"El Grito Mexicano” (a scream) is commonly done during Ranchera music

Ranchera is derived from the word “rancho” because this music originated on the ranches of rural Mexico

Norteño

Accordion and “bajo sexto” (12 string guitar) are most popular instruments

Late 19th century: European migrants brought the accordion, waltz, and polka to Northern Mexico (hence the name Norteño)

Blend of these instruments with Ranchera music

Usually middle or fast tempo
